Kieran heard soundless footsteps following him. Even though the person following him made sure not to make any obvious sounds, he could still hear it with his keen hearing. “what?” he glanced back.
Rue stood there blankly. “Well, you have to make your son agree to my plan. He thinks I’m a weirdo,” he grimaced.
“I still don’t trust you,”
Rue frowned. “I told you everything. What else do you need to prove my sincerity?”
“There was an obvious flaw in your story. You said you were born on an eclipse and the moon goddess did not gift you with a mate, if so, then the whole clan must have known about this. There is no use for you to act out a charade. If you clan doubts your lies then Nico will be in even greater danger,”
He sighed loudly. This young girl was smart, but sometimes younglings were quite naive.
Kieran glanced at her but she had a triumphant smile on her face. he frowned.
“No one knows.. Because my mum gave birth to me away from the clan.”
“w-what?” this was new information. He peered into her eyes. She looked very sincere.
“Arctic wolves have been powerful for a very long time. The other werewolf clans also had their eyes on us. So Alpha Lowe, um my so-called father sent away my mum far away. My birth was a secret. No one knows when I was born, well except you and as well as Nico.”
Kieran slightly contemplated what to do now. This girl’s word rang truth. Alpha Lowe was known to be very protective of his mate. He did not even expose his mate’s location to anyone. Not even the clan member knows who or where she is. It was kept secretive.
Another small doubt arose in his mind. If he is such a protective alpha, why did he bring his daughter here and put her at risk? Succession? Maybe.
“I can see the doubts in your face. I am in fact my father’s child and I was brought here because I was showing signs of early change. Since I don’t have a mate, my wolf is very agitated and sad…My shiftings are uncontrollable. Only the pack can comfort my wolf,”
“oh,”
“Still don’t trust me?”
Kieran coldly looked at her. “Maybe... follow me,”
“Yeah~” she happily hopped behind him. ‘so what is your grand plan to tell Nico. It better be soon, things are moving faster,”
“What else do you know?”
Rue smirked widely. “Pack secrets.”
“Fine don’t tell me,” he led her to his house and opened the doors wide. “Come in.”
“dad!” Nico came running down the stairs. “where the heck were you? I was talking to you one minute and the next you were gone. What the hell...”’ he ran to him and patted the snow off his shoulders. “Why didn’t you wear a darn coat? Fuck, what if you freeze your finger off? You know vampires can’t regenerate...”
“Nico,” Kieran gently patted his cheeks.
Nicolai looked behind him at Rue. “oh...”
“So you visited that place? It’s amazing right. I love it,” Rue excitedly ran up front and chattered about.
Nico gave his father a look.
“Nico we have to talk.”
He led them both to the hall and made them sit on the comfy sofa beside the lit fireplace. He even made sure to bring out a plate of freshly made cookies and biscuits.
Nico became skeptical of the topic they were going to discuss. But he kept his mind open.
“Listen Nico from this day forth. I want you to pretend to be Miss Rue’s mate.”
“What!!” Nico snapped in just a second. “no offense Rue I didn’t mean it in a rude way, but what?” he glanced at his dad, winking at him subtly.
“None taken,”’ Rue just casually sat there eating the biscuits. “These biscuits are good,” she happily hummed.
“Sit down, Nico,” he pulled him down onto the sofa.
Nico just blankly looked at him. “Dad you said I will find my beloved... is this... is that it? But I don’t feel anything with her... she.. I don’t think she’s it.”
“Shh. Listen to dad okay? You are just going to ‘pretend’ to be her mate. Nothing more. You are not her really mate nor is she your beloved, so calm down,”
Nico sat back down. Taking a deep breath, he sat there trying to process the information that was just thrown his way. “Why?”
“I need the pack men off my back,” Rue interfered before his father could even answer.
Nico glanced at her with a frown. “you could have asked any wolf. Why me? I’m a vampire,”
“Spitting out the facts, eh? Look I don’t care if you are a vampire or werewolf. I just want those sniffing nostrils off my butt. If I find a wolf, then they would gain a small amount of control over the pack, but you, you’re a vampire. You can be my mate, but you won’t gain power,”
Nico glanced at this girl. “You don’t want your mate to become alpha, do you?”
Usually in Rue’s situation, after she mated with someone, that person would become the next alpha. She can only be a beta. But if she had a human mate or a vampire mate, then she would inherit full control of the pack for her dad.
It was a genius idea. But there was one thing that was nagging his mind.
There was no benefit for them.
His father never accepted a deal that was not beneficial.
‘So... what are we getting out of it?’
“Nico?” his dad glanced at him.
Nico had a small clue what their benefit was. Protection.... if he was acting as Rue’s mate then the pack won’t hurt him during the uprising….
If an uprising ever happened…
‘Fuck... this is getting worse by the day.’
He could not stay silent in the dark any longer.
“Are we going to war?” he uttered.
Rue fell silent and so did his father.
“Yes,” Rue said confidently. “we are. The wolves will attack any minute now. that’s why you need to be protected.”
Nico stood up and glanced down at her coldly. “And why is that?”
“Cuz... you... you’re...”
“Rue, it's time you left,” his father pulled her away from him and pushed her out the door. “Come home anytime for cookies.”
“Sure~” she happily shouted from outside.
Nico peered at his dad this time.
“There’s going to be no war happening any time soon. She’s just making fun... chill,”
Nico silently left to his room after that. he did not even bother to ask. He knew he will only get radio silence for his questions... Laying on his cold bed, he peered up at his ceiling. The paint was peeling off and hanging by a small bit. ‘that’s my life right now. It’s hanging by a thread. So many lies and so many hidden truths. I don’t know..... dad doesn’t have to complicate things. He can just tell me the truth. I can handle it... I can...’ But his father only treated him as a baby boy. It was so unfair. He silently hummed a song waiting for nighttime to arrive. By then his stomach started to growl. He tottered over to the small mini-fridge in his room and drank some goat blood his father got from the local butcher. It was tasted grassy and kind of different. He was not used to the taste. Grimacing, he placed the bottle in the fridge. ‘Pancakes. I saw pancake mixture down.’ He decided to give up on blood and chose
Deep in the night, Nico snuck down to the basement. His dad usually sleeps right at 11 pm so he was in the clear. He can finally uncover the truth. He tightly clenched the torchlight as he moved closer to the basement door.It was left open to his relief. He snuck in and climbed down the cold stairs. Last time he didn’t notice it but the basement was pretty deep underground. He flashed the torch at the walls. The walls were translucent blue in color. ‘blue?’ he touched the surface. It was very cold. The thing he previously thought of as a rock or a boulder was actually frozen permafrost.Permafrost, a layer of ice deep underground the arctic that never melts. It was natural that this old castle had one. Many houses had this. it was to store meat. it acted as a natural refrigerator. But none of the wells dug up to permafrost was this deep or this spacious. It usually looked like a small well where people
Nicolai ran back to his room and got ready. It was a very simple choice. He had only black or blue clothing. He chose the ink blue turtleneck and black jeans to go with it. He did not bother styling his soft, wavy black hair. Any kind of gel he applied to it will not stay. His hair type was that way. ‘What was the use of styling it?’ Nicolai peered at his reflection. His brown-gray eyes looked much bluer than usual. A sudden itch on the back of his neck distracted him from admiring his face. “God, seriously, why does it itch so much? Fuck, I wish to just tear at it” he scratched the spot unconsciously until it turned red. He instantly regretted that decision and placed a wet towel over it to soothe the irritated skin. After the redness somewhat went away, he tosses the towel away and swiftly wore shoes. He let his shaggy hair be and ran down the stairs. “I’m ready to impress a crowd,” Rue stood down there with a bright smile. “
After throwing fits, things smoothed out between Alpha Lowe and him, albeit it took a bit of time.Six months to be exact.Alpha Lowe came to the conclusion that his son-in-law was going to be an annoying preteen vampire with anger issues. He also learned that if one of the sides did not give up, they would end up hurting each other badly.Nicolai sat on the cold dusty floor peering at the broken ceiling, thinking about all that happened in the past.He still couldn’t believe that the pack actually believed Rue’s lies or the fact that Rue’s mate never appeared. She was twenty. It was past the prime time she can find a mate.He sat her silently. She was chewing on a gummy loudly.“What? you want a gummy?”“Nah, why are we here again? In this witch’s den,”She smacked him hard. “Don’t call it that,”“Fine, a witch’s adobe,” he evaded her sma
Kieran left the house in tears. He knew today was the day. The day he had to leave his son forever. He silently walked over to the broken-down house. The door was left unlocked. He walked in and sat on the cleaned spot on the ground. He could still feel his beloved’s presence in this house. In every brick and every dust-covered thing...she was there. This was the house they first made love, the place where he proposed... now it’s in ruin.Yes, his wife was a witch, the witch of the arctic pack.Twenty years ago when he was assigned to overlook this pack, he met her, Eloise. a beautiful brunette. She was like a ray of sunshine. Her smile could really light up the room.Kieran took out the crumbled photo from his pocket. His beloved’s face was slightly smeared from years of folding.“Eloise... oh honey... today I am finally going to join you. I’m happy and anguished at the same time. Our son.... who will
Night came around and Nico still waited in the hall with the book in hand. His father was nowhere to be seen. He even searched the basement again for assurance.Sighing, he peered at the crackling fire. The clock struck eight. He stood up. “This is it.” he placed the book down and left the house.Rue’s place was quite far from his house. It was about twenty minutes drive and an hour by foot.He took his father’s car keys and drove over to her place. Their secret meeting spot was right behind the packhouse. There was a huge tree house there that none of the pack members use.Rue and he used to hang out there when they were bored. He climbed the creaking wooden steps. “Rue...” he whispered ever so softly.“shh..” Rue pulled him up. “Today we are going to sneak into my house,”’“um... aren’t we going to talk about the big secrets today,”&ldq
Rue pushed the three wolves out of the way and kept a hold of them.Nico rushed to attack them.“Fucking run! now! There is no time! Go go!”Gritting his teeth Nico peered at her. “Seriously. I’m taking my beloved with me”“no! you can’t! Nico just run now. he is safe here... Dylan is safe here.”“Dylan....that’s what you are going to name him? That sounds… tacky…” Nico glanced back and then at her who was fighting three grown wolves.“Not the time for this!” Rue punched the wolf. “Just go. Please. go to your dad,”Gritting his teeth Nico peered at them fighting. He decided to do the best thing. Fight. He ran to them and punched the one close by. He pulled Rue behind and started to throw punches. His blood lust permeated the air.It was not strong enough to hold back three grown wolves. But he was able to control one of them.
Rue peered at the ceiling blankly. Her baby brother was lying next to her, still crying loudly. She gently patted his small body. “Where did it all go wrong.... Dylan... do you know, I was at fault? I was the reason your mate is dead....”The baby sniffled, peering up at her.“Will you blame me.... you should blame me.... he was such a sweet guy. Even my heart was starting to sway for him,”The door banged open and a wolf ran in. “Miss Rue.... your father...”“What is it?” she blankly peered at him.“I’m afraid it’s bad....”Her heart sank to the bottom. Carrying Dylan she ran out of the room.Right in the hallway she saw it.. her father hanging from the ceiling... his ruddy face was pale as a sheet of paper and his blue eyes were lifeless. She could not breathe.“Miss Rue... Alpha Rue....” everyone gazed at her with compassion. But c
