BENEATH THE FACADE

Behind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.

CHAPTER 71

Emily’s POV:

The air was too quiet.

I sat by my window, staring out at the streets below, watching people move on like life was normal. But mine wasn’t. Not anymore. The moment Eddy told me what he knew, what he had carried in his heart for years, something changed in me. Something hardened. I no longer saw my father the same way. I no longer looked at Ethan the same way either. I had to know the truth. All of it.

Eddy had gone back to the hotel, but his words stayed with me. "I didn’t come back to stir your emotions, Emily. I came back for justice. For your mother. And revenge, for my brother.

I still remembered the way his eyes had burned, not with anger, but with pain. Deep, buried pain.

I didn’t sleep that night. My thoughts wouldn’t let me. I kept thinking about Madam Grace. About how long she must have suffered in silence, watching something she knew was wrong and not knowing who to te

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.CHAPTER 72Emily’s POV: I didn’t notice it at first.Josh was always the quiet type, at least for a toddler. He could spend hours in a corner with his toys, babbling to himself, running his toy car along the wall, or curling up beside me while I worked on my laptop. He was that kind of child, easy, affectionate, never fussy. So when I didn’t hear him for a while that afternoon, I thought he had dozed off on the couch or had gone back to his toys in the guest room. This weekend Nyla had come to say hi to Josh and I. So, It was Nyla who sensed it first.“Emily,” she called out, voice laced with something I couldn’t place yet. “Where’s Josh?”I looked up from the laundry basket and blinked. “He’s probably in the room. He was there just a moment ago with the TV on.”But she was already moving. I followed. The living room was empty. The TV was still on, playing soft cartoon music, but there was no trace of

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 70Emily’s POV:I didn’t know where else to go, so I went to Nyla’s apartment. She opened the door before I even knocked properly, her eyes scanning my face with that familiar concern. “Emily,” she said, pulling me into a hug, “you look like you’ve been carrying the world.”I didn’t answer. I just stood there, letting her hold me. I think she knew I was close to breaking. She didn’t ask questions. Not yet.She led me inside, and I sank into her sofa like I’d been running for days. My chest ached. My body was tired. But it was my mind that was screaming the loudest.“Do you want water?” she asked softly.I nodded. She brought it over and sat beside me. I took two small sips, then set the cup down. My hands were shaking.“It’s getting too much,” I said finally.Nyla didn’t push. She just waited.“I feel like I don’t even know who I am anymore,” I continued, my voice small. “Like… everything I beli

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 69Even after Eddy stopped talking, I couldn’t speak. I felt like something in my chest had shifted. Something I couldn’t move back into place. My breathing had changed. My hands were cold. I didn’t realize I had started crying until a tear touched the side of my lips.Eddy leaned forward and reached into the inner pocket of his jacket. Slowly, like he had carried this moment for years.“I wasn’t going to show you this at first,” he said, pulling out a brown, folded paper. “But I think you need to see it.”He stretched it toward me. My fingers were stiff, but I took it.“I found this among my father’s things. It’s not addressed to anyone, but we both know who it was meant for.”I opened it carefully. The paper was old. The ink had smudged in a few places, like whoever wrote it had cried while doing so.It was my mother’s handwriting. My eyes ran over the words, but for a moment, they didn’t regi

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 68Emily’s POV: The room was wrapped in silence, the kind that felt too loud, where every sound stood out like a scream. The wall clock ticked steadily, each second stretching longer than the last, and the wooden floor groaned softly beneath Eddy’s slow, restless pacing.I sat on the bed like someone whose body was there but my soul had slipped away. My shoulders were hunched, arms limp by my sides. My face, drained of color, felt heavy from the tears that had fallen and dried, fallen and dried again. My eyes stung, raw from crying too much, too long. The letter still rested in my lap, its edges slightly crumpled from where I’d clutched it earlier in panic. I had reached for it hoping for answers, but what I found instead was a wound carved open in ink. Its words didn’t just speak, they pierced. They told me things I wasn’t ready to hear, truths I didn’t want to carry. With every line, I felt l

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 67Emily’s POV: The manager at Caffe Farenzo—a tall man in crisp black trousers and a white tee with the café’s logo printed neatly across his chest, walked up to our table with a polite, almost apologetic smile.“Good evening, ma’am… sir,” he began, his voice low but firm, the kind that tried to be respectful even while drawing a line. “I hate to interrupt, but we’re about to close up for the night. The staff needs to wind down. I hope you understand.”“Oh God,” I whispered under my breath as my eyes darted toward the window. The sky outside had darkened completely, a velvet sheet of night spread across the world. I hadn’t even noticed when the sun dipped or when the streetlights flickered on. I’d been too caught up, too wrapped in the whirlwind of everything Eddy had been saying. The kind of truth that eats away at the hours without asking permission.I reached for my phone, the screen lighti
