The sound was faint.

Too faint for most.

But not for her.

Caroline’s eyes snapped open, her breath catching sharply in her throat. For a split second, she didn’t move her body still heavy with exhaustion, her mind dragging itself out of the fog of restless sleep.

Another sound.

A shift of leaves.

Someone was there.

Her wolf stirred instantly, rising beneath her skin with a low, warning growl.

We are not alone.

Caroline pushed herself up slowly, her limbs protesting as the cold night air wrapped around her. The damp earth clung to her palms as she steadied herself, her senses sharpening despite the lingering fatigue.

“Who’s there?” she called, her voice hoarse but steady.

Silence answered her.

The waterfall roared behind her, drowning out the subtler sounds of the forest but not enough to hide the presence she could now feel.

Watching.

Waiting.

Her heart began to pound not with fear, but with something sharper.

Instinct.

Her wolf pressed forward, restless.

Not pack, it murmured. Different.

Caroline’s gaze swept the tree line, her posture straightening despite the ache in her body.

“Show yourself,” she said, quieter this time but firmer.

A shadow shifted between the trees.

Then

He stepped forward.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Unfamiliar.

Moonlight filtered through the canopy, catching on dark skin and sharp features, illuminating eyes that seemed to hold both caution and curiosity. He wasn’t dressed like any member of the crescent moon Pack. His presence alone made that clear.

An outsider.

Caroline’s body tensed immediately.

“What are you doing here?” she demanded, her voice sharpening as she took a step back, putting distance between them.

The man didn’t move closer.

Didn’t threaten.

But he didn’t retreat either.

“I could ask you the same,” he replied calmly.

His voice was deep, steadyunbothered by her tone.

Caroline frowned. “This is Crescent pack territory.”

“And yet,” he said, glancing briefly at the waterfall before his gaze returned to her, “you’re the one sleeping at the border.”

There was no mockery in his voice.

Just observation.

And that unsettled her more than anything else.

Her jaw tightened. “Answer the question.”

A pause.

Then

“I didn’t mean to intrude,” he said. “I was passing through.”

Her eyes narrowed. “No one just passes through pack territory.”

“Most don’t,” he agreed easily.

Something about his calmness irritated her.

Or maybe it was the way he didn’t seem intimidated.

Didn’t react the way others in her pack would.

Didn’t look at her like she was fragile.

Or broken.

Or beneath notice.

He looked at her like she was…

Equal.

Caroline pushed the thought away immediately.

“State your name,” she said, her tone commanding despite her current state.

He studied her for a moment before answering.

“Jack.”

Just that.

No title.

No pack.

No explanation.

“Jackwhat?” she pressed.

A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face.

“Just Jack.”

Her wolf growled softly at the lack of information.

He hides something.

Caroline folded her arms, unimpressed. “You expect me to believe you wandered into another pack’s territory with no purpose?”

His lips curved slightly—not quite a smile.

“I expect you to believe what you want.”

Her irritation flared.

“You’re trespassing,” she said. “If the Alpha finds you here—”

“Will what?” Adrian cut in gently. “Punish me?”

There was no fear in his voice.

Only quiet confidence.

Caroline hesitated.

Because the truth was

Yes.

Magnus would punish him.

Severely.

Especially now, with tensions high and outsiders arriving for the ceremony.

Her silence stretched just long enough for jack to notice.

“You don’t sound convinced,” he said.

“I’m warning you,” she snapped.

“And I’m listening.”

That calm again.

Unshaken.

It disarmed her more than anger would have.

Caroline exhaled slowly, forcing herself back into control.

“Leave,” she said. “Now. Before someone else finds you.”

Jack didn’t move.

Instead, his gaze shifted—taking her in fully now.

The dirt on her hands.

The tear tracks on her cheeks.

The exhaustion she couldn’t quite hide.

“You’ve been crying,” he said quietly.

Her entire body stiffened.

“That’s none of your business.”

“No,” he agreed. “It isn’t.”

But he didn’t look away.

And that

That made something twist uncomfortably in her chest.

Most people avoided her.

Ignored her.

Or judged her.

But this man

He saw her.

And didn’t pretend otherwise.

Caroline looked away first, her jaw tightening.

“Go,” she repeated.

A long moment passed.

Then

“Alright.”

The word was simple.

Easy.

But something about it felt… deliberate.

He took a step back, then another, retreating toward the trees.

Caroline let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.

But just before he disappeared into the shadows

He stopped.

“You shouldn’t stay out here alone,” he said without turning.

Her brows furrowed. “I can handle myself.”

“I don’t doubt that.”

A pause.

“Still doesn’t mean you should have to.”

The words lingered in the air long after he vanished.

Caroline stood there for a while after he left.

The waterfall roared.

The forest settled.

But something had shifted.

Something small.

Something she didn’t understand.

With a quiet sigh, she ran a hand through her hair and turned back toward the path.

She couldn’t stay here.

Not tonight.

Not after that.

The walk back felt longer than usual.

Heavier.

Her mind replayed the encounter over and over again.

His calm.

His gaze.

The way he spoke to her like she wasn’t… less.

It unsettled her.

More than the whispers.

More than the stares.

Because she had grown used to those.

But this?

This was different.

By the time she reached the abandoned house, the sky had begun to lighten faintly.

Dawn was approaching.

Caroline stepped inside, closing the door behind her softly.

The silence inside was thick but not suffocating.

Not like before.

She leaned back against the door, closing her eyes briefly.

For once

Her thoughts weren’t consumed by Klaus.

Or Bonnie.

Or the ceremony.

Instead

They drifted back to a stranger at the edge of the waterfall.

Jack.

Her wolf stirred again.

He is not ordinary.

Caroline frowned slightly.

“I know,” she murmured.

And for the first time in weeks

Something other than pain lingered in her chest.

Not hope.

Not yet.

But something close enough to make her uneasy.

And curious.

Very curious.

Three weeks later, Caroline returned to the only place that still felt like hers. The waterfall at the edge of the territory. Its endless roar drowned out everything the whispers, the commands, the expectations. Here, she didn’t have to pretend. Here, she didn’t have to be strong. The water crashed violently against the rocks below, relentless and wild, much like the storm she kept buried inside. This place had seen her at her worst. It had witnessed her break apart in ways no one else ever would. It had heard her screamsraw, shattered, desperate as she hurled her pain into the empty air. It had listened to her questions whispered to the Moon Goddess, questions that remained unanswered. It had held her sobs when her chest felt like it would cave in from the weight of everything she had lost. Here… She was not the obedient wolf. Not the outcast. Not the discarded mate. Here, she was just Caroline. And she was hurting. While she struggled to breathe through her

Caroline understood it clearly now.Her value. Her connections. Her usefulness to the pack. That was why Alpha Magnus had denied her resignation. Why did he bound her with obligation instead of allowing her freedom? This was never about fairness, this was control. He would keep her exactly where she was, draining every advantage she offered until there was nothing left to take. And she knew it.Respect was what they demanded of her.Not the kind earned through care or loyalty, but the kind forced through power, hierarchy, and fear. But fine. She would give it to them. For now.She would play along. For a long stretch, no one dared to speak. The silence was suffocating thick, oppressive, pressing down on every chest in the room. Caroline stood unmoved at its center, her words still lingering like a final verdict no one could undo. Then Klaus moved. The future Alpha stepped away from Bonnie’s shaking form, his arms reluctantly loosening around her as though even that small distance cost him something. His shoulders were rigid, his jaw tight, his storm-filled eyes locking onto Caroline. When he spoke, his voice cut through the stillness too sharp, too forceful, as though anger was easier than guilt.“Enough, Caroline!”The harshness of it echoed.“You’re not being fair.”Caroline tilted her head slightly, her expression unreadable, almost detached.“Fair?” she echoed softly, like the word itself was unfamiliar.Klaus took another step forward, his fists clenching at his sides.“You think you’re the only one suffering?” His voice strained, something raw breaking through despite his

The office was steeped in a suffocating silence, the kind that pressed against the chest and made every breath feel heavier than the last. It was broken only when Alpha Magnus’s voice cut through the stillness ,firm, controlled, laced with an authority that demanded obedience. Yet beneath that steel edge was something more urgent, almost desperate. He needed to command this moment before it unraveled completely. There would be time later, he assured himself. Time to speak with Caroline. Time to mend what had been shattered. Time to remind her that she was cherished, that she still belonged. But not now. Now, the pack came first. It always had.The future of the pack. The heir Bonnie carried. The fragile stability hanging by a thread. Those things outweighed everything else even the pain of one person.Even Caroline.Magnus exhaled slowly before turning his gaze toward her, softening his tone just enough to feign compassion.“Caroline,” he began, measured and calm, “you said you wish
