Chapter 1

Fragrant Ink
I yanked the IV needle out of my hand. Blood from the open wound trickled down the back of my hand.

Wanda Lynch looked at me and frowned.

"Enzo Underwood, what are you doing now?"

Her tone sounded like she was scolding a misbehaving child.

I looked at her and felt my heart getting colder.

"Let's break up."

I said the words with unusual calm.

There was no anger or shouting.

Wanda froze for a moment. That familiar look of disappointment appeared on her face.

"Just because I forgot to get your medicine?

"Just because I went to see Chris first?"

She raised her voice as if I were the one being unreasonable.

"Can you stop being so childish and selfish?"

It was that line again.

I felt a sharp pain in my stomach, but it was nothing compared to the chill spreading through my chest.

Heartbreak was the worst kind of pain.

I looked at her. She was the woman I had loved for five years.

"Then let's end it."

She let out a dismissive scoff and turned around to leave.

She was certain I would chase after her, apologize, and beg her to come back like I always did.

She was certain I couldn't live without her. She was certain I didn't have the guts to really break up with her.

After all, our careers were tightly intertwined. She believed she had control over everything I had.

Or rather, she thought she did.

This time, she was wrong.

I watched her walk away and didn't say a word to stop her.

For the past five years, this one-sided dynamic had drained me completely.

I was truly tired.

Wanda had just reached the door when her phone rang.

She picked it up immediately. Her voice turned gentle.

"Chris, what's wrong?"

Chris Luther's weak voice came clearly through the phone.

"Wanda, come back. I'm scared of being alone."

There was a tremble in his voice. He sounded like a child who had been terribly wronged.

Wanda instantly switched to a soothing tone.

"Hey, it's okay. Don't be scared. I'll be right back.

"Lie down and pull the blanket over you. Don't catch a cold."

Her voice was extremely gentle.

It was completely different from the impatience and irritation she had just shown me.

I leaned back against the bed and listened as her gentle voice faded outside the door.

I listened as she poured all her care and attention into another man.

I smiled mockingly at myself.

How ridiculous.

My stomach condition had flared up. I was here on an IV drip.

She forgot my medicine and called me immature.

Chris just had a common cold, and she acted like the sky was falling.

He said he was scared.

How could a grown man in his twenties be scared of staying home alone?

Only Wanda would believe something that absurd.

Maybe it wasn't about believing. Maybe she was just willing to play along.

I closed my eyes. My heart had gone cold.

A scene from a year ago suddenly surfaced in my mind.

That day, Wanda ran a red light to take a shortcut.

A runaway truck came barreling toward us.

Without thinking, I shoved her out of the way.

My leg was crushed under the wheels.

I suffered a comminuted fracture.

After surgery, I lay in the hospital bed and was drenched in sweat from the pain.

Wanda only stayed with me until noon.

Chris called and said he'd just gone through a breakup. He was drinking at a bar and was contemplating suicide.

Wanda immediately stood up with panic written all over her face.

"Enzo, it's Chris. I need to go check on him."

I grabbed her hand and said hoarsely, "I just got out of surgery."

She shrugged me off. It was that familiar expression again.

It was a mix of disappointment and impatience.

"Chris is losing the will to live! You're already fine. Can you stop being so selfish?"

With that, she turned around and left without looking back.

She spent the whole night drinking with her heartbroken childhood friend.

She left me alone in that cold ward to endure the agony of fractured bones.

Back then, I still held onto a sliver of hope.

I thought she was only confused for a moment.

Now, I finally understood that it wasn't a coincidence.

It was a deeply rooted pattern.

In her world, Chris would always come first.

Every little thing about him mattered more than my life.

I was always the one who could be sacrificed and overlooked.

From now on, I would stop compromising.

I held the diagnosis and stood on the balcony for a long time. The evening wind rustled the paper in my hand.In the end, I picked up a lighter and set it on fire. The flame rose and consumed every word on the paper. It also burned away the heavy, suffocating past.Be it love, hatred, obsession or betrayal, it was all over. With Wanda gone, and with the diagnosis reduced to ashes, everything had finally faded away. What I needed to do wasn't dwell on the past.Instead, I needed to cherish what was in front of me.I turned around and went back into the living room. Melissa was reading on the couch.I walked over and hugged her from behind."Mel.""Hmm?""Thank you."'Thank you for showing up and pulling me out of the darkness. Thank you for showing me what a healthy kind of love looks like.'She put her book down, turned around, and hugged me back."Silly. You don't need to thank me."A year later, our son, Harry Underwood, was born.Harry looked like me, but his eyes

The police found a diary among Wanda's belongings. They contacted me and asked if I wanted to claim it.I hesitated, but in the end, I still went to get it.The diary was thick. It recorded her entire journey from arrogance to regret and complete despair. At the beginning, it was filled with complaints about me.She wrote that I held her back and that I wasn't generous enough. In the middle, after I left, she wrote about her panic and regrets. She wrote that for the first time, she realized how empty and helpless life was without me.On the very last page, there was only one sentence. The handwriting was messy. It looked as if she had used the last of her strength."The medicine that could've saved me was always in my hands."I just kept throwing it away myself."The officer handed me the diary and asked if I wanted to take it.I looked at it, and it felt like I was staring at Wanda's regret-filled face. That diary felt too burdensome for me.In the end, I refused.I ha

Later, I heard that Wanda was living in a cheap rental on the outskirts of the city. Her room was filled with empty bottles. The air smelled sour.Curled up on a worn-out couch, she held a phone with a cracked screen. She was watching the replay of my proposal over and over again. In the video, I stood confident and composed while Melissa smiled radiantly. We looked perfect together, and we seemed so happy.Wanda had lost a tremendous amount of weight. Her gaze looked hollow and empty. She kept muttering to herself."If only I had brought the medicine."If only I hadn't gone to see Chris."If only."Unfortunately, hypothetical 'what ifs' didn't matter in the world. She once held the cure to everything, but she threw it away with her own hands again and again.Regret slowly chipped away at her conscience. She felt miserable day and night. Her life seemed to be reaching its end.Melissa and I held our wedding by the sea.The sun was bright, and the breeze was gentle.Fr

Wanda refused to leave.Like a mad person, she waited downstairs at my company for days. She would linger around from day to night. She lost her composure and looked almost like a beggar. She was trying to win my sympathy through suffering.Unfortunately, she miscalculated.I walked past her every day without sparing her a glance. In fact, Melissa and I made no effort to hide our closeness. We went to work together and left the office together. We exchanged knowing smiles during our work discussions. We served each other food at meals. Each moment was like a dull blade that slowly cut into Wanda's heart. That evening, the temperature in South City dropped. As Melissa and I walked out of the building, a cold breeze blew past us.She shuddered a little.I immediately took off my coat and draped it over her shoulders.I then adjusted the collar for her.My movements were gentle, and my gaze was soft.Wanda saw everything from not far away. She had once received that sam

Wanda ambushed me downstairs at my new office. After just a few days, she looked completely worn out.Gone was the elegance and arrogance she once carried. The moment she saw me, her eyes welled with tears."Enzo!"She ran over and tried to grab my hand, but I sidestepped her."I know I was wrong. I really do."She was crying and spoke through choked sobs."Will you come back with me? The company can't survive without you."We've been together for five years. Please give me one more chance."She was trying to guilt-trip me.It was her final and most effective choice of weapon. In the past, the moment she cried, I would give in.But now, looking at her tears, I felt nothing. It was ironic."Help you?"I looked at her and spoke coldly."Help you go back and keep stealing my work?"Then hand it over to Chris so he can keep being the technical director?"My words were like a knife that pierced straight through her heart. Her face turned pale instantly. Even her tears se

Wanda was utterly dumbfounded. She grabbed her phone and frantically dialed my number. She kept trying and trying, but all she got was the same cold automated voice."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable."Reluctant to give up, she tried to message me.Realizing I had blocked her, she trembled. In fact, I had blocked her on every single platform. It was exactly what she used to do to me.Only this time, I wouldn't be adding her back.Panic set in.
