Chapter 3

مؤلف: Teal Brewster
The words that followed next, however, plunged me straight into a freezing abyss.

"Levi was the one who reminded me to bring this for you.

"Look at him, always thinking of your well-being. Can't you open your heart and treat him a little better in return?"

I stared down at the scraps floating in the thin broth, a sickening wave of nausea rolling through my stomach.

"Tessa, you're feeding me Levi's leftovers. Do you even have a heart?

"Or what, has it been six years and the Laurent Group is about to go bankrupt? You can't even afford a single bowl of fresh broth?"

Tessa snapped to her feet, her face flushing with furious embarrassment as she splashed the hot broth in my face.

"Why do you have to be so vicious with your words? Are you still holding a grudge because I shoved you back then?

"I was only trying to protect you! If you had actually stabbed Levi, you would have ended up in prison. What was I supposed to do?

"I spent six whole years looking for you! Can't you find it in your heart to forgive me?"

Hearing her hypocritical words made me laugh until tears blurred my vision.

The fishing village where I had been trapped was only thirty miles away from the city.

With the vast resources of the Laurent family, even if she had dragged her feet, she could have tracked me down within a single month if she actually cared.

Yet Tessa let six years pass, leaving me to burn under the harsh seaside sun for two thousand days and nights.

During that time, she erased my existence from the media and threw a massive, public engagement party for Levi.

Back when I still had my amnesia, I had caught a glimpse of them on a digital billboard, a picture-perfect couple smiling back at the world, and felt a strange, piercing ache in my chest.

At the time, I didn't know that specific ache was the agony of losing everything.

I pointed a shaking finger toward the door. "Get out. Get as far away from me as you possibly can!"

Tessa loomed over me, her gaze freezing cold and terrifying.

"Aiden, no matter how much of a tantrum you throw, I’m getting that kidney.

"The doctor already said it. In three days, once your strength is back up, we'll do the surgery!"

Without waiting for my answer, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the room.

A few moments later, cheerful laughter drifted over from the adjoining room.

It was Tessa and Levi, excitedly planning their post-recovery honeymoon vacation.

A violent coughing fit wracked my body, my chest burning as though something inside me were tearing apart.

Suddenly, a warm, metallic taste filled the back of my throat.

I instinctively slapped a hand over my mouth.

When I pulled my hand away, bright crimson blood smeared across my palm.

Instead of panicking, a bitter laugh escaped my lips.

Tessa had no idea that I had been diagnosed with early-stage stomach cancer six years ago.

Back in the fishing village, frequent nosebleeds and stabbing stomach cramps had become my normal.

As my memories were erased and I had no money to seek treatment, I had simply gritted my teeth and pushed through the pain.

After six miserable years without treatment, I knew I had little time left.

…

Waiting until the bodyguards let their guard down, I climbed out of the window, dropped to the ground, and escaped.

The drop from the second floor onto the grassy lawn wasn’t too bad, but it aggravated the old injury in my crippled leg.

With nowhere else to go, I limped all the way back to the house I used to call home.

Mrs. Morgan, the housekeeper who had raised me since I was a child, was still working there.

After all those years apart, her hair had turned noticeably grayer.

The moment she laid eyes on me, she recognized me instantly.

Pulling me into a tight embrace, her eyes welled up with tears.

"Thank God you're back," she choked out. "Let me whip you up something good to eat right now."

Taking advantage of her trip to the kitchen, I slipped upstairs to the second floor.

All of my favorite books had been thrown out long ago, replaced by rows of expensive collector models.

My old art studio had been converted into a personal rock-climbing wall for Levi.

Even my former master bedroom had been completely overhauled into the shared suite for Levi and Tessa.

I pulled open the nightstand drawer and found a crumpled wrapper from an opened box of condoms.

I had known for a long time that they were together.

Yet seeing the undeniable proof with my own eyes still felt like a knife twisting in my chest.

"My illness will definitely be cured, and the Cole Group will always be mine."I went through all that trouble to get rid of your annoying first wife and become the legitimate son. How could you casually sell off the company?"Hearing Levi’s frantic, unfiltered slip of the tongue, my dad froze in his tracks."Didn't you tell me that night that you just accidentally dropped a cigarette butt?"Realizing he had exposed himself, Levi scrambled to backtrack."Dad, I misspoke. Don't take it seriously."Buy back the shares right now. And get back the money you donated, too!"My dad shook his head. "No, I won't listen to you anymore."As for your future medical bills, I'm not giving you a single penny."Levi stared at him in wide-eyed shock. "Why? Dad, I'm your only child left! You can't just sit back and let me die!"My dad didn't soften, his voice heavy with crushing disappointment. "I always thought you were innocent and kind-hearted, someone who made mistakes now and then."I

"I did all of this for you, and you still have the nerve to blame me?"Levi, you're nothing but a heartless ingrate!" Tessa spat. With all pretenses shattered, Tessa and Levi tore into each other, screaming and pointing fingers right in each other's faces.Once the explosive argument finally burned out, Tessa drove back to the house to pack up her belongings and leave.Only then did her eyes fall upon the blood-stained divorce papers resting on the nightstand. The signature across the page was entirely my own.Every stroke of my name was pressed so hard that the ink bled through the back of the paper.Looking at it felt like peering through the fragile page straight into the heart of a man who had already been shattered beyond repair.A belated realization hit her like a physical blow. Six years ago, that night when I vanished, we had never actually signed any divorce papers. The first thing I did when I was dragged back into her world was cut all ties with her, vowing never t

The days that followed blurred together as I lingered like a phantom, shadowing their every move.I watched Levi heal day by day.He started getting out of bed, eating hearty meals, and mapping out a bright future with Tessa."Tessa, once I'm fully recovered, let's have our honeymoon in the Maldives," he suggested."Aiden is gone now, so you shouldn't keep thinking about trying to get back together with him."His kidney is right here inside my body, and I'll gladly step up to be his substitute."He put on a pitiful, grievance-stricken act that left Tessa visibly torn. After all, I was dead. The living always had to find a way to move on.Tessa fell silent for a long moment before finally giving in."I won't bring up breaking up with you again."Once you’ve recovered, we'll take a trip to the beach."Listening to their back-and-forth left me feeling detached, like I was watching through a foggy glass.Tessa didn't seem quite as hopelessly in love with Levi as I had once ima

Dr. Matthews flinched under the sheer fury of Tessa’s presence but pressed on and repeated himself with a trembling voice."Miss Laurent, the donor had already shown no signs of life before the surgery even began."His heart had stopped, his pupils were dilated, and his body was already starting to stiffen."I was about to inform you of this, but you explicitly instructed me to ignore unnecessary matters and just do my job."Tessa's pupils dilated in pure horror. "What do you mean he had no signs of life when he was brought in?"He was literally screaming and fighting with me back at the house, his voice louder than anyone else’s. How could he possibly be dead?"…The harsh, hysterical screech echoed down the corridor, drawing sharp stares from passing nurses and family members. My dad heard it, too.He charged forward, grabbing Dr. Matthews by the collar of his white coat with a bloodshot, wild look in his eyes."What kind of insane bullshit are you spewing?! How could my so

When I opened my eyes again, every single ounce of pain in my body had completely vanished.I stared down at my translucent hands, feeling utterly dazed.I was dead, yet my soul was somehow still trapped in this world.Seeing me collapse onto the ground, Tessa's first instinct had been to cry out, but Levi stopped her right in her tracks."Tessa, have you forgotten that Aiden’s favorite trick is using cheap, pathetic little stunts to act like a victim?"He clicked his tongue and casually ground the heel of his shoe against the pool of blood on the dirt, sneering in disgust."This is completely fake. He definitely used animal blood to fake coughing up blood from rage. Tessa, don't fall for his pathetic tricks!"Hearing that, Tessa lashed out, angrily kicking at my face."Aiden, stop playing games."I already know you're just faking it to trick me. If you get up right now, I might actually forgive you."Yet even with Tessa using every ounce of her strength to stomp and kick my

Tessa recoiled a step, startled by the fierce, savage look in my eyes, but she quickly forced herself to stand tall and push back."Aiden, stop acting like the good guy here!"Mrs. Morgan was only fired because of you, anyway. Who told you to be so disobedient?"I whipped my head around to face my dad. "Dad, is that what you think, too?"To save the man who killed your wife, you're willing to have your own son's kidney cut out! Are you even human?!"My dad's face drained of color under my roar, and he pointed a shaking finger right at my nose, red with furious embarrassment."You ungrateful monster! Shut your mouth! Levi is my son, too!"Tessa snapped. She pointed straight at me, her expression twisted into pure cruelty."Aiden, even if you have to die today, that kidney is staying with Levi! Guards! Tie him up and drag him back!"Mrs. Morgan tried to step forward and help me, but a single threat from Tessa froze her in her tracks."If you dare take one more step, I'll make s
