Mr. Beckett senior and his wife live in a mansion outside the city. My jaw drops as we drive thru the enormous perfectly illuminated garden, it looks like a place from a fairytale. On both sides of the mansion, there are two enormous stone fountains that look like they belong in a public park, not a private home.“They are impressive aren’t they?” Leopold asks referring to the fountains as he parks his red convertible in front of the mansion. “My mother had them sent from Italy. Apparently, local fountains are not good enough for her taste,” he says jokingly.

The dinner seemed to last an eternity. I think that was as true for me as it was for Leopold; I was putting up with his mother looking daggers at me the entire time, while he was dealing with David’s passive-aggressive comments. On top of that, we are clearly not a very good fake couple, we kept saying the wrong thing about each other over and over. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Becketts conclude Leopold and I are in no way together, let alone engaged to each other. Luckily, this evening is finally over.“What we did tonight was stupid,” Leopold says as he drives us back to his apartment. “If we are going to pretend to be a couple, we have to get to know each other.”

I hold back a yawn. I didn’t get much sleep last night with all of our chatting and getting to know each other. I go into the apartment trying to make as little noise as I can. Lunch with Constance turned into a day at a spa and then dinner and cocktails. Mary Alice is a really agreeable girl, I had a lot of fun today pretending to be her fake “future sister-in-law.”Now it’s almost one o’clock in the morning, I don’t want to wake Leopold up. I walk to my room discretely. At least tomorrow is Saturday so I don’t have to worry about waking up early for work.

When I arrive at our apartment, Eddie is not here, only his mess. I clean up a little bit, put his clothes in the washing machine and I do the dishes.
