Chapter: Early Rising

The morning air was still thick with dew when Seth and Charlene wrapped up their early workout. ReNew and Heth arrived shortly after, just in time for an unplanned mission—one that involved family and, hopefully, breakfast.

“It’s really early,” Charlene grumbled, rubbing her arms. “The first orb is barely even in the sky.”

As if on cue, a rooster crowed loudly in the distance.

ReNew winced. “Are we seriously doing this? Should we be here? I mean… last time we just showed up, remember?” She leaned in closer. “Are we trying to get shot?”

Seth chuckled, unbothered. “They’re not that bad, girls. This is a working farm—they’ve probably been up for hours.”

“Doing what, exactly?” ReNew asked, eyeing the quiet barn suspiciously.

The girls and Heth started strolling toward the house.

“Where are you going?” Seth asked, confused.

“To get breakfast, of course,” Charlene answered flatly, brows furrowed.

“I said they’re working. On the farm,” Seth said, pointing toward the large red barn. “Come on, you’ll see.”

As they walked, Seth launched into what might have been an informative speech—if not for the timing.

“On a working animal farm,” he began, “tasks vary, but generally include feeding and watering the animals, herding them, health checks, grooming, milking—”

“Dad, please no gross stuff,” Charlene warned.

“There’s also treating sick animals and, well… sometimes removing—”

“No!” Charlene interrupted, groaning.

“We haven’t eaten!” ReNew complained. “Why would you say that before breakfast?”

Heth just laughed, enjoying the back-and-forth. “You were saying, Seth?”

Seth grinned and kept going. “There's also mucking out stalls, administering medication, bedding, and milking—”

“Milking sounds fun. I wanna do that!” ReNew said brightly.

“That’s a lot to do by yourself,” Charlene muttered.

“We could help out today,” Heth suggested. “Pitch in while we’re here.”

“I’m game,” said ReNew.

“Where do we start?” Charlene asked, cautiously optimistic.

“By now,” Seth said, looking toward the barn, “my father should be with the chickens. Let’s check it out.”

Charlene raised her hand and blinked. With a shimmer of magic, everyone’s clothing transformed into sturdy work gear—overalls, gloves, work boots, and even straw hats.

“Thanks, Char!” Heth said, admiring his new look. “Loving this farmer drip.”

They walked up to a structure beside the red barn. A chicken coop, quaint and cozy, sat under a wooden awning.

“This is where the chickens get shelter from weather and predators,” Seth explained. “Although, around here, we’re probably the only predators.”

He smirked, thinking of his mom’s fried chicken.

Sure enough, Odo was already there, tossing feed to the squawking hens. Charlene and ReNew sprinted over to help, scooping up feed and mimicking Odo’s motions.

Surprised but amused, Odo handed them the feed buckets and walked toward Seth and Heth. He gave them a once-over, eyeing their outfits.

“Good morning,” Odo said. “What brings you out here so early?”

“Good morning, sir,” Heth said, shaking his hand. “We’re here to lend a hand… if that’s alright.”

Seth shrugged. “Thought the girls could enjoy the farm. Help out. Then maybe… grab breakfast?”

Odo chuckled knowingly. “Ah, so that’s what this is about. You’re here for Beth’s cooking. Can’t blame you. That woman can throw down in the kitchen.”

He rubbed his stomach and smiled. “She’s making chicken and waffles this morning. My favorite.”

“Say less,” Seth said, already turning toward the house.

“Hold up!” Odo stopped him with a laugh. “Food’s not ready until chores are done. So, thanks for the help!”

He handed Heth and Seth two empty buckets. “Collect some eggs from the coop. The girls are already feeding, so they’ll join me in the barn for milking.”

Charlene and ReNew handed their empty buckets to Odo, then followed him into the large red barn. The heavy wooden latch creaked open as they stepped inside, greeted by the scent of hay and livestock.

“Alright, ladies,” Odo said, stretching his back. “Ever milked a cow before?”

“Never,” ReNew said, practically vibrating with excitement.

“This’ll be interesting then. Who’s first?”

“Me!” ReNew shot her hand in the air like a schoolgirl.

Charlene rolled her eyes. “You’re giving extra right now, ReNew.”

Odo laughed and set a stool beside a patient-looking cow. “Watch me. Start milking about a minute after removing the pre-dip. Use your thumb and index finger to trap the milk at the base of the teat, then squeeze with the rest.”

He demonstrated, and both girls leaned in to watch, eyes wide.

“Alright, your turn,” he said.

ReNew scrambled onto the stool, grinning. “Trap and squeeze, got it!”

She squeezed—and accidentally shot milk right into Charlene’s face.

“Oh my God!” Charlene wiped her face with her shirt, glaring. “Real funny!”

ReNew was cracking up. “Oops.”

Odo laughed heartily. “Y’all are something else.”

“Try again,” he encouraged. “Remember, open your fingers between squeezes to let the teat refill. You’re looking for five dry pulls in a row. And always use a filtered jar to collect it.”

ReNew focused and soon filled her first glass jar.

“Well done!” Odo smiled. “You’re a natural.”

Charlene tilted her head. “Grandpa?”

Odo blinked. “Grandpa?”

“Is that okay?”

He smiled gently. “Yeah, just new, that’s all. What’s your question?”

Charlene glanced around. “Why all this hard work? Couldn’t you just use your powers and be done with it?”

Odo nodded slowly. “You could. But there’s something about working with your hands—something sacred. It gives me peace. I’ve struggled with depression for years, Charlene. Only recently came to terms with it. This,” he gestured around the barn, “helps me. It keeps me grounded. Helps my body and mind stay young. There’s value in doing something simple with your whole heart.”

Charlene was quiet a moment, then said softly, “Thanks for being honest. That must’ve been hard.”

He smiled. “We’re family. That means being real. Now... do you smell that?”

The girls both wrinkled their noses. “Cow poop?”

“No—breakfast.” Odo tapped his mark and suddenly zoomed off in a blur, kicking up dirt behind him.

“Oh no he didn’t!” ReNew shouted and launched into the sky.

Charlene blinked herself onto the porch, arriving just as Beth opened the door.

“Oh my!” Beth exclaimed, hand on her chest. “You’re not who I was expecting! But the more, the merrier.”

“Good morning, Grandma,” Charlene said, kissing her cheek. “In my race to beat them here, I forgot to tell Dad and Heth.”

“No worries,” Beth said warmly. She leaned over Charlene and yanked a rope hanging beside the porch.

Clank!

The sound of the dinner bell rang loud across the fields.

Back by the coop, Seth and Heth heard it loud and clear—and started jogging.

But something else arrived first.

Without warning, a portal tore open near the edge of the barn. Black, smoky tendrils burst out, hissing and writhing like living shadows.

“Heth, move!” Charlene’s voice echoed in his mind just in time.

He dodged, barely escaping as the smoke surged past him.

Seth, however, didn’t see it coming. The shadowy tentacles wrapped around his body, slamming him to the ground like a ragdoll. He gasped, wind knocked from his lungs as the smoke forced its way toward his mouth.

It clung like tar, binding his limbs and chest, trying to choke the life from him.

Heth screamed in horror, “NO!”

Everyone inside heard the cry.

And just like that… the peaceful morning shattered.

She wasn’t in the mood to talk. Not today. ReNew had stayed locked away in her room, silent and simmering. But Charlene? She showed up, just like she promised—ready to meet her dad.Seth was already waiting for her, seated at the edge of the glowing lagoon inside the cave. His shirt was off, revealing the tight muscle cords across his back, and he hummed softly while stretching, legs spread on the mat beneath him. He didn’t turn when she approached.“Join me,” he said simply, patting the mat beside him.Charlene sat down, unsure of what they were doing, but willing to follow. She tilted her head as she watched.“Do what I’m doing,” Seth said calmly. “Breathe slowly and steadily. Inhale deep… now exhale. Good. This helps oxygenate your muscles and prevents them from cramping.”She mirrored his movements, mimicking his slow stretches.“Stretching,” he continued, “isn't just about flexibility. It’s about control. Grace. Power. Exhale as you deepen into the stretch. Hold it for at least t

Seth looked at her with a storm of concern flashing across his face."CHARLENE, WHAT DID YOU DO?" he demanded. She froze, caught off guard by his tone. “I taught him a lesson. That’s all!” she said, a little too defensively.Seth’s eyes scanned her—sharp, observant. Then he noticed it. Her soul—ReNew—wasn’t with her. That might explain it. ReNew had been in the cave ever since they’d left his parents’ house.“Tell me you didn’t kill him!” Seth choked out, his voice cracking. He gripped the broken necklace in his hand like it was a lifeline. “Tell me you didn’t do something irreversible just to get this stone. Answer me, Princess. Please!”“Dad, seriously? The plan was to get them to give us the hidden place stones, remember?” Charlene replied. “So we could understand what he’s up to and what their return really means. And I did just that.”Seth looked like he’d aged ten years in a second. “I understand the assignment,” he said, “but Charlene—answer me, please.”She waved him off, tryi

Beth waved to everyone as they exited the house through the glowing portal. Odo lingered, reaching out slowly—almost reverently—to touch the shimmering edge before it could close, trying to trace its exit path. But just as Charlene stepped out on the other side, she felt it—an energy signature, subtle but familiar. Fate magic. Someone had tried to follow them.Without hesitation, she turned and slammed her hand into the closing portal, scrambling the pathways mid-closure. Her instincts screamed one name. She reached into the spiritual tangle and yanked. Before Seth could react, Charlene vanished. The portal snapped shut.“Princess!” he called out, panic thick in his voice.Meanwhile, deep inside Charlene’s mind’s eye, Odo found himself strapped to a chair in a void of darkness.“What… what is this?” he muttered, blinking against the sudden beam of light that pierced the shadows and hit him in the face.Charlene stepped out of the dark, cloaked in authority. Her voice was disguised—dee

Could he have really forgiven her already?"A little birdie told me someone’s got a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks," Issa said.Charlene blinked. "That’s right..." She’d completely forgotten with everything going on. Her seventeenth birthday. Back on Earth, they never made a big deal out of it—no parties, no fri

“Will you all be staying for dinner?” Beth asked warmly, her eyes resting on Seth first, then drifting to each Fate who had entered her home. She smiled, radiating a rare joy, waiting patiently for their response.Charlene, donning a matching apron with her grandmother, stood beside her with a hopeful grin, bouncing slightly on her toes. She glanced from Seth to her grandma, silently pleading for the answer she wanted to hear. They all knew what she wanted—especially Seth.Charlene couldn’t contain herself any longer. She began tugging at her father’s sleeve with all the charm of a child trying to win a trip to the candy store. To Charlene, this moment was magical. To Seth, it was complicated. Beth was kind, gentle—but also passive. Her refusal to stand up to Odo had led to a childhood Seth would never forget… or forgive. Still, he wouldn’t bring up the past in front of everyone. He’d remain courteous, calm. Polite. Because that’s what was expected. But inside? Inside, he burned with

Seth and Odo continued to argue, oblivious to the silent audience gathering nearby. Destiny sat on a bale of hay just outside the red barn, her posture relaxed but her eyes sharp. She'd been there the whole time, watching. High above, two black crows swooped down, landing beside her. They shimmered as they touched the ground, transforming into Heth and ReNew in their humanoid forms."How long can they go at this?" ReNew asked, crossing her arms with a smirk."I guess until one of them runs out of steam," Heth said, not even flinching as a loud grunt echoed from inside."Or until they kill each other," Destiny added dryly. She shook her head. No one moved to stop the brawl—perhaps everyone agreed the two men needed to let this tension burn itself out.Suddenly, Seth lunged at his father. His fist flew toward Odo’s face, but the older man sidestepped just enough to avoid the brunt of the blow. He retaliated quickly with a punch to Seth’s ribs, knocking the wind out of him. Heth and ReNew perched silently atop the red barn, cloaked in the form of two ominous black crows. The realm’s twilight skies gave their feathers a sleek, unnatural sheen. Both of their minds were tethered—interlocked with Seth and Charlene's thoughts. Every word spoken, every flicker of emotion, they absorbed in perfect synchronization.“It looks clear from up here,” ReNew murmured telepathically.Heth gave a sharp nod. “Too clear. Like a trap waiting to spring.”Farmland stretched as far as their enchanted eyes could see. Crops swayed softly in the wind. Chickens strutted freely, cows grazed lazily, a rooster crowed proudly from atop a wooden fence. Pigs wallowed in the mud while a pair of horses trotted playfully near a fenced boundary. Off in the distance, a still pond reflected the darkening sky, flanked by ducks and geese floating serenely.“This place looks like a postcard from Earth,” ReNew said, her voice laced with suspicion. “No Realm architecture. Everyone who mattered was in the war.Destiny made a point to be dressed to impress—not out of vanity, but to remind everyone watching that she was still sovereign, still standing, still golden. She was the First Spear, born of sacrifice and fire, and tonight, she shone like a sun that refused to set. Her gown, woven from pure gold, hugged her figure like liquid light. The fabric danced with the flames of countless battles she’d survived. Her crown was not perched but intertwined with the thick waves of her dark black hair, blending regal poise with divine authority. Her sun-kissed skin glowed, as though the heavens themselves still clung to her presence. To her left stood Seth, wearing royal blue robes streaked with polished lines of gold, his expression resolute. To her right was Charlene, equally resplendent, matching his attire but adding her own fire to the air—an unspoken promise of youth, power, and mystery yet to unfold.Behind them, others stood at attention, all dressed with
