The Scent Of Betrayal

The moving truck sat in the driveway like it was waiting to swallow the last seven years of my life.

I picked up another box labeled *Kitchen Misc.* in my own handwriting from years ago and tried not to think about how pathetic it was that everything I owned fit into seventeen boxes and four garbage bags.

“Mommy, can I bring Mr. Whiskers?”

I turned and found my son clutching his stuffed wolf—the one Damien gave him on his third birthday. Back when I still believed in fairy tales. Back when I thought the Moon Goddess had handed me a mate who would actually choose me.

“Of course, baby.” I pushed brightness into my voice, the same fake cheer I’d been faking for the last seventy-two hours. “Mr. Whiskers goes where you go.”

Ezra’s face lit up, and for a second the knot in my chest loosened. Five years old and he still looked at me like I hung the moon. He didn’t understand why we were leaving home. He didn’t understand why Daddy wasn’t here to say goodbye. He didn’t know Daddy was three miles away, probably still tangled up in bed with *her*. With Vivienne. The woman whose jasmine-and-vanilla scent had been all over my mate’s skin for months.

I’d been such a fucking fool.

“Mrs. Thorne?”

I flinched at the name. The moving supervisor stood at the back of the truck, clipboard in hand, his face carefully blank. Human. He couldn’t smell the way my bond with Damien was rotting, couldn’t hear my wolf snarling and snapping inside me, furious at the mate who’d thrown us away.

“It’s just Sera,” I said, voice rough. “Just Sera.”

He nodded like he understood. Maybe he did. I wasn’t wearing the ring anymore—I’d thrown it in the river two nights ago under the full moon and watched it disappear. The Goddess hadn’t stopped me. Guess she’d finally admitted her mistake.

*You were never meant to be Luna,* Vivienne’s voice sneered in my memory. *Damien was always mine.*

“We’re about loaded,” the supervisor said. “Should make Pinehaven by sundown. You sure you don’t want to ride with us? Long drive for you and the kid.”

I glanced at my beat-up sedan, stuffed to the roof with whatever didn’t fit in the truck. “We’ll be fine. I need my own wheels.”

What I needed was an escape hatch. A way to run if Damien changed his mind about letting us leave. Not that he would. He’d already made it crystal clear when he stood in our—*his*—bedroom and told me the bond was a mistake the Goddess had finally fixed.

Seven years of marriage. Seven years of playing the perfect Luna—hosting the Solstice galas with a smile even when my feet bled in those heels, stepping between raging enforcers before blood hit the floor, biting my tongue until it scarred just to keep the peace. All of it tossed aside the second Vivienne walked into pack territory.

“Mommy?” Ezra tugged my jacket. “Why are you crying?”

I wiped my face fast. “Just dust, baby. Let’s get you in the car.”

As I buckled him into his booster seat, my wolf surged forward. I felt him before I saw him.

Damien stood at the end of the driveway, hands in his pockets, every inch the Alpha he was born to be. Tall. Broad. Dark hair falling across his forehead. Amber eyes that used to make my stomach flip. Still did, damn him.

“Sera.” My name sounded wrong coming out of his mouth. “I didn’t think you’d actually go.”

A bitter laugh tore out of me. “What did you expect? That I’d stick around and watch you play house with her?”

He flinched. Good.

“The pack—”

“The pack chose their Luna.” I slammed the car door so Ezra wouldn’t hear. “They bowed to Vivienne last week. I stood there like a ghost while they swore loyalty to the woman who stole my life.”

“You’ll always be Ezra’s mother—”

“Don’t.” The word cracked like a whip. “Don’t you dare feed me that line.”

He stepped closer, jaw tight. “I never wanted to hurt you. Look… I can set you up in Pinehaven. Money. A house on pack land there. Whatever you need. For Ezra.”

The offer landed like a slap. My wolf lunged against my ribs, teeth bared, wanting to rip his throat out for thinking money could fix this.

“I don’t want your guilt money, Damien. I don’t want anything from you anymore.” I yanked the driver’s door open. “You made your choice. Live with it.”

He reached for me. “Ezra’s my son. I want to be in his life.”

The audacity stole my breath. “You want to be in his life? The life you’re letting us walk away from?” My voice dropped, shaking with rage. “Three days ago he ran to *her* and called her Mommy. My baby—*my* baby—called another woman Mommy. Do you have any idea what that felt like?”

Damien went pale. “I didn’t know—”

“Of course you didn’t. You’ve been too busy playing the perfect  Alpha and Luna with your true mate.” I slid behind the wheel, hands trembling. “You want to be his father? Then you should’ve fought for us. But you didn’t. So stay the hell out of our way.”

“I can’t reject a true mate bond,” he said, voice cracking. “You know that.”

“Yeah,” I whispered, starting the engine. “The Goddess has a real sick sense of humor.”

I pulled out behind the moving truck before he could say another word. Refused to look in the rearview mirror. Refused to see if he watched us disappear.

“Mommy?” Ezra’s small voice came from the back. “Is Daddy coming to the new house?”

“No, baby.” Tears slid down my cheeks. “Daddy has to stay here.”

“Because of the pretty lady?”

My heart shattered. “Yeah. Because of the pretty lady.”

We drove in silence until my phone buzzed. I shouldn’t have looked. I did anyway.

**Vivienne:** Sera, I left the rest of your things by the gate. Don’t worry about Ezra when he visits—I’ll love him like he’s my own. He’ll adjust so well. Children are resilient.

Another message right after.

**Vivienne:** Oh, and tell him his new little brother or sister can’t wait to meet their big brother. We’re all going to be one happy family.

The phone slipped from my fingers.

Pregnant.

She was pregnant with the baby I could never give him. The final nail in the coffin of everything I’d failed at.

I yanked the car onto the shoulder, barely getting it in park before the sobs ripped out of me. Ezra started crying too, scared, and that sound snapped me back like a slap.

I twisted around, reached for his little hand. “I’m sorry, baby. Mommy’s okay. We’re okay. I promise.”

His lip trembled. “Promise?”

“I promise. We’re going to be happy. Just you and me.”

The lie burned, but I swallowed it.

Four hours to Pinehaven. Four hours to figure out how to be a single mom in a town where nobody knew me. Four hours to pretend my whole world hadn’t just burned down.

I’d barely made it twenty minutes when my wolf suddenly went dead still.

A feeling slammed into me—powerful, ancient, hungry. Not Damien’s warmth. Something else. Something that made every hair on my body stand up.

I looked up.

A massive black wolf stood on the ridge above the highway, silhouetted against the dying sun. Too big. Too still. Silver eyes—bright, metallic silver—locked right onto my car.

My wolf exploded forward, no longer whimpering. She was snarling, hackles raised, ready to fight or claim or run. Recognition. Warning. Want.

Then he was gone, melting into the shadows like smoke.

“Mommy?” Ezra asked. “What was that big doggie?”

“I don’t know, baby,” I whispered, gripping the wheel tighter.

But I knew one thing for damn sure.

Whatever I’d left behind in Damien’s territory wasn’t the only monster waiting for me.

And my so-called fresh start in Pinehaven had just gotten a hell of a lot more dangerous.

"You need to sleep."Kael’s voice came from the doorway, low and steady. I didn’t look up from the maps scattered across the kitchen table."I can’t. The divine enforcers arrive tomorrow. I need to memorize every escape route, every weak spot in our defenses—"He crossed the room in three long strides and gently pulled the pen from my fingers."Sera… you’ve been staring at these maps for six hours straight. You’re running on nothing but coffee and nerves. Come to bed.""People are counting on us—""Which is exactly why you need rest," he said softly, taking my hand and tugging me toward the bedroom. "You can’t fight if you’re about to collapse.""Kael, I can’t just—""Yes, you can. Four hours. That’s all I’m asking."I let him lead me into the bedroom and sat down heavily on the edge of the bed. Suddenly the tiredness hit me like a wave."What if I can’t do this?" The words slipped out before I could stop them. "What if tomorrow comes and I freeze? What if I’m not strong enough?"Kael

Five days after Damien left, the first wolf fell sick.Young male. Twenty-three. Healthy and strong. He collapsed during patrol. By the time they got him to the clinic, he was burning with fever."I don't understand," the doctor said, checking vitals. "Everything's shutting down. It's like his body's attacking itself."Two hours later, three more wolves showed the same symptoms. And by nightfall, ten were sick."It's the Goddess," Helen said, her face grim. She'd examined the sick wolves with magic. "Divine plague. I've read about them. She has done this before to the packs who defied her.""How do we stop it?" Marcus demanded."There is nothing we can do about it. She's the only person who can cure it. That's the point. Submit or watch your people die."I looked at the sick wolves lying in makeshift hospital beds. One was a teenager. Sixteen. She'd been at the meeting, voted to fight. Now she was dying for that choice."There has to be something," I said. "Some cure, some magic—""T

Scylla barely agreed, but she did."I don't like children," her voice rumbled through the phone like distant thunder. "They're loud, messy and they break things.""He's well-behaved," I lied."All parents say that. That's not new. Fine. One week and after that, I'm returning him back, whether your war is over or not.""Deal."Saying goodbye to Ezra was the hardest thing I'd ever done."I don't want to go," he said, holding firmly to Mr. Whiskers. "I want to stay with you and Kael.""I know, baby. But it's not safe here right now. Scylla will keep you safe until Mama fixes things.""Are you fighting the bad guys?"I glanced at Kael. He nodded slightly."Yes.""Then I should stay and help! I'm Silverblood too!""You're five. Your job is to be safe so I can fight without worrying about you.""But—""No buts. You go with Scylla. You learn from her. And when this is over, you come home. Okay?"He hugged me tight. "Okay. But Mama? You have to win. I don't want a new mommy again."My heart s

"There are twelve vehicles coming up the mountain road."Marcus's voice crackled through the phone at 6 AM. I jerked awake, nearly dropping it."What?""Twelve SUVs. All with Thorne Pack insignia. Damien's here, and he brought an army."Kael was already out of bed, pulling on clothes. "How long do we have?""Twenty minutes. Maybe less if they're pushing through the speed limits.""Get everyone to the town square. Now."I scrambled up, my heart hammering. "He can't just invade Pinehaven like that.. This is neutral territory.""He can if he's carrying divine mandate." Kael tossed me my jeans. "The Goddess probably gave him authority to retrieve you by force.""Then we fight.""Not yet. First we see what he wants. Maybe—""Maybe nothing. You know what he wants." I put on my clothes, grabbed my phone. "Mrs. Ravenna, I need you to take Ezra somewhere safe. Like right now."Ten minutes later, we stood in the town square with every supernatural being in Pinehaven. Wolves, witches, vampires

  • Beyond The Moon's Promise: [The Forsaken Luna]   Divine Ultimatum

The divine messenger arrived at noon. I was actually expecting something dramatic like thunder and lightning but to my surprise nothing like that. Just a woman walking down Main Street like she belonged there.Except for her eyes that glowed with divine light. And power radiated off her in waves that made every supernatural in Pinehaven stop and stare. She walked straight to Morning Moon Café, sat in the corner booth and ordered coffee, then she waited.Marcus called me. "She's here.""I know. I can feel her." The bond with Kael was screaming danger."We're gathering. Come to the café in ten minutes. Don't bring Ezra."I left him with Mrs. Ravenna again. Grabbed Kael. We met Marcus, Lydia, and the supernatural leaders outside the café."Remember," Marcus said. "We listen. We don't attack.""Unless she attacks first," Celeste added."Obviously."We walked in together. A united front. The messenger looked up from her coffee and smiled. But It didn't seem like a good positive type of smi

"Again."Ezra stumbled, caught himself, and shifted back to human form. Sweat dripped down his face despite the cold morning air."I can't. I'm tired.""Then you push through tired." Kael's voice was patient but firm. "In a real fight, your enemy won't care if you're exhausted or not. Again."We'd been training for three days. Kael pushing Ezra to shift faster, smoother, and with more control. I watched from the tree line, ready to intervene if it got too intense.Ezra closed his eyes. Concentrated. His body rippled and reformed into a wolf pup with silver eyes and dark fur."Better," Kael said. "Now hold it for five minutes. Move around. Get used to the body."Ezra-wolf trotted in circles, testing his legs. He was getting better. The shifts came easier each time."He's a natural," Lydia said from beside me. She'd been observing the training, taking notes on Silverblood development and improvement."He's five. He shouldn't be shifting at all yet. Don't you think?""Well, normal wolves
