Chapter 2

Penulis: 1st Oct
Just as Vanessa was about to continue ranting at me, a message suddenly popped up in the group chat, announcing that the freshman students had to head down to a lecture hall for a meeting.

When the four of us from the dorm room arrived at the lecture hall, everyone suddenly turned toward the entrance and started cheering.

"Thank you for the new air conditioners that your father donated to the school, Ms. Stuart!"

Everyone crowded around Vanessa and started showering her with flattery.

At some point, Vanessa noticed me again. She picked up a handbag and walked over to me with a smile.

"Juliette Claude, right? Well, even though you tried to steal the bed I wanted, I don't want things between us to get too ugly. Here, you can have this handbag. I know you're poor. If you sell off the bag, you can at least afford some decent meals with the money."

I was completely taken aback to see the way she was twisting the truth around like that.

"You're the one who attempted to steal my bed, Vanessa. I still have the photos I took this morning after setting up the bed. Do you need me to show them to you?"

The smug-faced Vanessa stiffened. She didn't expect me to have evidence. However, after she fell silent, one of our other classmates came forward and wagged a finger at me.

"That's enough, Juliette. All Vanessa did was ask whether you'd be willing to switch beds with her, but then, you started throwing all of her things around! The nerve of you to talk to her like that now."

The other students had remained neutral before, but now, they swiftly began to stick up for Vanessa.

"I knew it. There's no way Ms. Stuart would ever stoop to stealing someone else's bed."

"This country bumpkin must be the one who's deliberately causing a scene. Don't bother trying to establish a good relationship with her. So what if things get ugly between you two, Vanessa? It's not a big deal! We'll protect you."

"Now that I think about it, I saw her when I arrived at campus. She got out of a middle-aged man's car. Who knows? Maybe she had the guts to toss your things because she's someone's mistress. She's got a sugar daddy to back her up!"

I thought back to when I came to campus this morning. The supposed middle-aged man was Howard Grady, my family's driver. Yet here they were, spinning something as innocent as that into malicious rumors about me.

As their mocking laughter grew louder, my expression gradually turned cold. My anger started to rise.

By this point, I no longer wanted to keep a low profile. I wanted Dad to come over and handle this for me. But just as I was about to make the call, the door to the lecture hall suddenly opened.

Everyone turned to see a bespectacled middle-aged woman entering the lecture hall. It was our faculty advisor, Irene Rhodes.

"What's all this noise? Hurry up and take your seats. I need to inform all of you about the orientation week schedule."

But no one moved.

Just as Irene was about to get angry, Gina Moore, one of Vanessa's lackeys, ran over to her and pointed at me to report me.

"Ms. Rhodes, before you showed up, that country bumpkin was bullying Vanessa. First, she tried to steal Vanessa's dorm bed, then she tried to twist things around!

"Vanessa's dad donated all of the new air conditioners installed in the classrooms and lecture halls. It's thanks to him that we get to study in such a nice environment now!"

Why did they keep talking about the air conditioners? I was so confused. Didn't we all pay a facilities fee on top of our tuition? Was that not enough to cover the maintenance and even upgrade of the air conditioning system? What was this nonsense about Calvin being the one who donated the money for that?

But before I could think any further, Irene walked up to me and stared at me imperiously. "What's your name?"

"Juliette Claude."

Irene checked her call logs, probably to confirm that no one by the last name Claude had gotten in touch with her beforehand.

I chuckled. Well, she wouldn't have gotten a call from a Claude. Dad had gone directly to Ezekiel Hudson, the college president, for the donation of a new building. He probably didn't expect a mere faculty advisor to try to abuse her power against me.

Once Irene was certain there had been no prior notice about me, she was bolstered with enough confidence to raise her voice at me. "Don't you know that Ms. Stuart's family donated the air conditioners in our school?

"If your family is just as capable, you should be donating something to the school as well. Why are you trying to bully your fellow students instead?

"I've noted down your name. Apologize to Ms. Stuart right now. If she forgives you, I won't submit your name to the student affairs office. But if you don't, you can start packing your things and get ready to be asked to leave the school."

Unable to contain himself, Calvin roared at Vanessa, "You shut your mouth!" Vanessa was dumbstruck. She'd never seen this side of Calvin before. The previously catty and domineering Vanessa now lowered her head, too afraid to look at Calvin or me.Just as Calvin was about to start speaking again, his phone started ringing."What? Our shares dropped? What did you say? Claude Heritage Group has called off the partnership?"As Calvin started to get agitated, Vanessa began to feel terrified. She tugged on his arm and said, "I know I messed up, Dad."Calvin felt the tug on his sleeve and saw Vanessa, the culprit behind this entire mess, standing right next to him. He gave her yet another hard slap."You useless girl! Ever since you were a kid, I gave you everything you ever wanted, only for you to end up doing something like this. You've ruined me!"Vanessa tearfully wiped away the blood from her lips before looking at me. "I'm sorry, Ms. Claude. Please forgive my father. I'm the on

The more I said, the more hurt I felt. My tears were almost spilling out of my eyes. Dad immediately caught on to the keywords—Mr. Stuart, the man who came to us yesterday."Are you talking about Calvin Stuart of Lumina Corporation?"Once I nodded in confirmation, Dad gave an understanding nod before comforting me, telling me not to worry.Because I was on a video call, Calvin also heard Dad's voice."Ms. Claude," he called out tentatively. "May I know who your father is?"I looked at him and snorted. "Do you really not know who he is, Mr. Stuart?"The fact that I was throwing the question back at him served to confirm his suspicions. He dared not ask me again. He knew that if I were indeed the daughter of the man he was thinking of, he was done for.Calvin could only try to assure himself that there was no way I could be the daughter of the one and only Sullivan Claude. Families like ours would surely have sent their daughters abroad. Why would I be attending a local college?

After speaking to Howard, I went to grab some water from the car. However, just as I opened the car door, I heard a wave of commotion.Feeling puzzled, I heard Vanessa venting her grievances in a hurt voice."Look over there, Dad! That's the woman who's trying to extort money from us. She also ruined the bag you just bought me!"I looked over and saw Calvin studying me with a scrutinizing gaze, so without backing down, I glared right back at him.Calvin snapped his fingers, and one of his subordinates swiftly handed me a debit card."I can tell that you're not someone who tries to cause trouble for no reason, young lady. There are three million dollars in that account. You can have it. All you have to do is get on your knees and apologize to my daughter, and I'll let this matter slide."However, Vanessa angrily tugged on his arm, complaining, "Dad! Why are you giving her money? Didn't you say you'd back me up?"I tracked Calvin's gaze and saw that he was looking at the license p

Seeing this, Gina cast a pleading look at Vanessa. "Vanessa, you're the reason why the bag got wet… You should settle this with Juliette."Vanessa's eyes widened in shock, scowling as she stared at Gina. Glancing at my bag, she snapped, "How should we know whether your bag is real or fake? Are we supposed to just take your word? In that case, I can also say mine is worth 30 million dollars!"Besides, so what if it's really worth over 20 million dollars? Once my dad shows up, he'll help me!"As soon as she said that, the crowd switched sides again."That's true. Vanessa's father is the richest man in Weslington. He can easily afford that kind of money.""I even heard her father has some connections with the criminal underworld. Even if Juliette's family is rich, what can they do if they don't have any real power or influence?""I even saw Mr. Hudson chatting with Vanessa's father the other day. Mr. Hudson will probably leave after reprimanding Ms. Rhodes. Perhaps it was Mr. Stuart

Irene's keen eyes picked out Mr. Hudson right away. She dashed down the building and rushed up to Mr. Hudson and the other school administrators who'd come with him."What brings you here, Mr. Hudson?" she asked with a smile. "I see that you've brought quite a few people with you. Are you conducting an inspection of some sort?"I'd also hurried toward them, but as I stood there puzzled after seeing that Dad wasn't with them, Irene immediately pushed me aside."Don't tell me you've come to plead with Mr. Hudson for mercy. Well, I'll tell you right now that it won't work!" she snapped at me."Mr. Hudson, this is the brat who has been bullying her classmates on her very first day on campus! She is truly an unruly student, and she even ruined her classmate's outfit, which is worth two million dollars! Due to this, I've—"But before she could finish, Mr. Hudson walked over to me and said, "You've suffered, Juliette."When the others in the lecture hall saw that Mr. Hudson ignored Iren

"Custom-made? How is it custom-made?""Did your parents sew it for you? It's just a few pieces of cloth. How much could it possibly be worth?""If you know what's good for you, you'd hurry up and pay Vanessa the two million dollars you owe her first!"At last, Irene spoke up again, agreeing with the other students, "That's right. Mr. Stuart spent good money to help the school. If you can't afford to pay Ms. Stuart back, you can forget about staying in this school. Once I get the college president to come over, you'll be sent to prison!"Now that I saw how these people were flaunting their power and numbers to bully me, I knew I couldn't settle this matter alone. I pulled my phone out and called Dad.It sounded like he was in the middle of a discussion about some contract, so I figured he was still with Mr. Hudson."How has your first day been so far, Jules?" Dad asked. "Are your classmates easy to get along with? While I don't want you to start fights with anyone, you don't need
