Chapter 3

Author: 1st Oct
Irene's biased rebukes were the spark that finally set off the anger bubbling up inside of me.

Dad had gone to great lengths to arrange for me to study domestically. He even funded a building so I could focus on my studies without any trouble. Well, on my very first day on campus, these people were already trying to step all over me.

I was reminded of my friends who had gone abroad for their education. Joining them was probably better than staying in this college to suffer such grievances.

So, I made up my mind and said, "Fine. Go ahead and force me to withdraw. But I'm warning you—you'd better not regret this. I also expect a full refund of my tuition, dorm fees, and all other miscellaneous school fees."

Irene stiffened briefly before rolling her eyes, muttering under her breath, "As expected of a broke pauper."

After she sent a message to someone, she added, "Go pack your things and head to the college registrar to process your withdrawal. Your money will be refunded to you."

The other two of my now-former roommates could no longer hide the malice in their eyes. They started cackling gleefully.

"You're a country bumpkin, alright. Only you would harp on money like that. Hurry up and get your filthy things out of our dorm room!"

I returned to my seat and quickly packed my belongings, preparing to leave. But suddenly, one of the two roommates said something to Vanessa.

As I walked past them, Vanessa suddenly stretched out her leg and tripped me. I lost balance and knocked over a water bottle on the desk. The water went everywhere, soaking both my bag and Vanessa's.

For a moment, the lecture hall went silent before laughter erupted all around.

"You're screwed now, you country bumpkin! Vanessa's bag is worth six figures, and the water also got on her clothes."

"Pay Vanessa back right this minute!"

I looked at Vanessa incredulously. Who would've thought she'd be this shameless?

"You're the one who tripped me on purpose, but now, you're expecting me to compensate you?"

"That's not true! This wouldn't have happened if you'd just kept your balance. It's your fault for not even being able to walk properly," Vanessa argued with an aggrieved expression.

I looked around the lecture hall. Everyone looked like they were ready to back her up.

"That's right. Now pay up, bitch!"

"Just get your sugar daddy to come over and help you. Doesn't he drive a Rolls-Royce?"

Outraged, I glared at the crowd and snarled out through clenched teeth, "Fine. You want compensation? So be it. However—"

"Hang on a second," Vanessa cut me off. "My entire outfit costs over a million dollars in total, and with my bag included, that's about two million dollars.

"A poor loser like you could never afford to pay me back, Juliette. Instead, I want you to get on your knees, crawl around our dorm building, and bark like a dog while swearing that you'll spend the next four years in college as my slave.

"Do it, and I won't get you expelled from school. You won't even need to pay me anything, either. How's that?"

My eyes widened in absolute shock. Not once had anyone ever dared to talk to me like that, much less demand that I get on my knees and bark like a dog.

Meanwhile, the crowd happily chimed in.

"That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Vanessa's so kind. She's letting you forgo paying back the two million dollars by just getting on your knees to apologize."

"Make your choice, loser. Is it paying back two million dollars or barking like a dog?"

If I were from an ordinary family, two million dollars would probably be enough to scare me into sobbing on my knees, begging for mercy.

But I wasn't.

Closing my eyes, I did my best to keep my anger in check as I said, "I can pay the compensation. But there are security cameras in this lecture hall. My outfit also got wet because of you, so you need to compensate me for that as well."

Everyone eyed me condescendingly.

"How much can a bunch of scrap cloth be worth anyway? I don't even see a brand on any of your clothes. If you want to be compensated, so be it."

"No one would even want to use your clothes as rags. It's not even fit to wipe tables with."

Snickers broke out among the crowd once more.

Opening my eyes, I glanced down at my dress, my voice sharp and clear. "Do you think only branded clothes are valuable? My outfit is custom-made."

Unable to contain himself, Calvin roared at Vanessa, "You shut your mouth!" Vanessa was dumbstruck. She'd never seen this side of Calvin before. The previously catty and domineering Vanessa now lowered her head, too afraid to look at Calvin or me.Just as Calvin was about to start speaking again, his phone started ringing."What? Our shares dropped? What did you say? Claude Heritage Group has called off the partnership?"As Calvin started to get agitated, Vanessa began to feel terrified. She tugged on his arm and said, "I know I messed up, Dad."Calvin felt the tug on his sleeve and saw Vanessa, the culprit behind this entire mess, standing right next to him. He gave her yet another hard slap."You useless girl! Ever since you were a kid, I gave you everything you ever wanted, only for you to end up doing something like this. You've ruined me!"Vanessa tearfully wiped away the blood from her lips before looking at me. "I'm sorry, Ms. Claude. Please forgive my father. I'm the on

The more I said, the more hurt I felt. My tears were almost spilling out of my eyes. Dad immediately caught on to the keywords—Mr. Stuart, the man who came to us yesterday."Are you talking about Calvin Stuart of Lumina Corporation?"Once I nodded in confirmation, Dad gave an understanding nod before comforting me, telling me not to worry.Because I was on a video call, Calvin also heard Dad's voice."Ms. Claude," he called out tentatively. "May I know who your father is?"I looked at him and snorted. "Do you really not know who he is, Mr. Stuart?"The fact that I was throwing the question back at him served to confirm his suspicions. He dared not ask me again. He knew that if I were indeed the daughter of the man he was thinking of, he was done for.Calvin could only try to assure himself that there was no way I could be the daughter of the one and only Sullivan Claude. Families like ours would surely have sent their daughters abroad. Why would I be attending a local college?

After speaking to Howard, I went to grab some water from the car. However, just as I opened the car door, I heard a wave of commotion.Feeling puzzled, I heard Vanessa venting her grievances in a hurt voice."Look over there, Dad! That's the woman who's trying to extort money from us. She also ruined the bag you just bought me!"I looked over and saw Calvin studying me with a scrutinizing gaze, so without backing down, I glared right back at him.Calvin snapped his fingers, and one of his subordinates swiftly handed me a debit card."I can tell that you're not someone who tries to cause trouble for no reason, young lady. There are three million dollars in that account. You can have it. All you have to do is get on your knees and apologize to my daughter, and I'll let this matter slide."However, Vanessa angrily tugged on his arm, complaining, "Dad! Why are you giving her money? Didn't you say you'd back me up?"I tracked Calvin's gaze and saw that he was looking at the license p

Seeing this, Gina cast a pleading look at Vanessa. "Vanessa, you're the reason why the bag got wet… You should settle this with Juliette."Vanessa's eyes widened in shock, scowling as she stared at Gina. Glancing at my bag, she snapped, "How should we know whether your bag is real or fake? Are we supposed to just take your word? In that case, I can also say mine is worth 30 million dollars!"Besides, so what if it's really worth over 20 million dollars? Once my dad shows up, he'll help me!"As soon as she said that, the crowd switched sides again."That's true. Vanessa's father is the richest man in Weslington. He can easily afford that kind of money.""I even heard her father has some connections with the criminal underworld. Even if Juliette's family is rich, what can they do if they don't have any real power or influence?""I even saw Mr. Hudson chatting with Vanessa's father the other day. Mr. Hudson will probably leave after reprimanding Ms. Rhodes. Perhaps it was Mr. Stuart

Irene's keen eyes picked out Mr. Hudson right away. She dashed down the building and rushed up to Mr. Hudson and the other school administrators who'd come with him."What brings you here, Mr. Hudson?" she asked with a smile. "I see that you've brought quite a few people with you. Are you conducting an inspection of some sort?"I'd also hurried toward them, but as I stood there puzzled after seeing that Dad wasn't with them, Irene immediately pushed me aside."Don't tell me you've come to plead with Mr. Hudson for mercy. Well, I'll tell you right now that it won't work!" she snapped at me."Mr. Hudson, this is the brat who has been bullying her classmates on her very first day on campus! She is truly an unruly student, and she even ruined her classmate's outfit, which is worth two million dollars! Due to this, I've—"But before she could finish, Mr. Hudson walked over to me and said, "You've suffered, Juliette."When the others in the lecture hall saw that Mr. Hudson ignored Iren

"Custom-made? How is it custom-made?""Did your parents sew it for you? It's just a few pieces of cloth. How much could it possibly be worth?""If you know what's good for you, you'd hurry up and pay Vanessa the two million dollars you owe her first!"At last, Irene spoke up again, agreeing with the other students, "That's right. Mr. Stuart spent good money to help the school. If you can't afford to pay Ms. Stuart back, you can forget about staying in this school. Once I get the college president to come over, you'll be sent to prison!"Now that I saw how these people were flaunting their power and numbers to bully me, I knew I couldn't settle this matter alone. I pulled my phone out and called Dad.It sounded like he was in the middle of a discussion about some contract, so I figured he was still with Mr. Hudson."How has your first day been so far, Jules?" Dad asked. "Are your classmates easy to get along with? While I don't want you to start fights with anyone, you don't need
