“What do you mean that you’re getting remarried tomorrow?” I asked my mother, my voice breaking as disbelief clawed through me.
She was getting remarried and tomorrow of all days. And of all the people in the world, it was to the alpha of the SilverFang pack.
“You promised me that you’d be single until we found father, Mother. You told me that you’d wait for him. You said you’d reunite our family,” I sobbed, my words tumbling out as I stared at her, searching for even a flicker of feeling.
But there was none. Not a single hint that she cared what I was going through. Instead, she was preoccupied with the boxes of luxury items strewn across the table.
Now the source of her newfound wealth all made sense. The strange, extravagant things she’d been flaunting these past weeks which was a lifestyle so foreign to us. We were omegas and poor and she was a janitor at a restaurant after she got sacked from her former waitress job. The confusion I've had for so long finally ended the instant she mentioned the alpha of SilverFang pack whom I was sure was the new sponsor.
“Mother, please…” I pleaded, though I knew my words would fall on deaf ears. She never listened. But desperate hope burned in me, a stubborn ember that maybe she would hear me this time.
This was a mistake. My father was still alive, I was sure of it. He had been lost, yes, but not gone. For years I had chased that hope, refusing to accept what Mother had already surrendered to. He had been a warrior, defending our pack during a rogue raid at the borders. That day, he disappeared, i was six. I am nineteen now and though there has been no word, I have never stopped believing he survived.
I couldn’t bring myself to accept that he was truly gone. I wouldn’t. He was alive. That was the truth.
“Make sure you’re there at the mating ceremony tomorrow, Emma,” Mother said, her tone sharp but casual, as if discussing the weather. “Your father is dead and gone. If you miss him, go to his grave. It’s been years now—why do you keep clinging to a dead man? It’s time for me to move on with my life.” She ran her fingers over the glittering jewelry on the table, the diamonds catching the light as if mocking my grief.
“And out of all the men who have sought you over the years, Mother, you saw no one else worthy of mating but the alpha?” I said, my voice trailing, tense and cautious as she turned her gaze on me with a venomous and sharp stare that made my skin crawl.
I looked away immediately, unwilling to meet her eyes. We both knew the truth. Countless men had tried to court her, to offer her gifts, wealth, status. And she had always chosen them for the benefits, never for love. Mother was a gold digger. She had chased power and luxury, weaving her life around men who could elevate her status, dumping them to another the second they go broke.
And now? Now she wanted to marry the alpha. Everyone would see through her plans. Everyone except her, of course. And I who was caught in the middle, would be the one to suffer the consequences.
It was already enough that I was an omega and wolfless. I could already imagine the bullying if she moved into the alpha’s mansion at SilverFang pack and then the bullying from my mates at the academy when they found out. Everything would only intensify. I wasn’t sure I would be able to come out of it easily this time.
“Why are you doing this, Mother? The alpha is rumoured to have a son, I—”
“He’ll become your stepbrother, Emma. Whether you like it or not! I’ve discussed this with the alpha and our mating ceremony is happening tomorrow! There’s nothing you can do or say that’ll stop it! And I want this to be the last time you mention anything concerning this topic!” she snapped sharply, her tone final and hard.
I parted my lips to speak but nothing came out. Not when I saw the look on her face. The cold finality in her eyes. She had already made up her mind. The alpha’s son who was rumoured to be cocky and arrogant didn’t bother her. Nor did she care how hard it would be for me to fit in with him as his stepsister. She didn’t care about how impossible it would be for me to adjust to a new family. It was all about herself.
And I was sure that was exactly why she had waited until the eve of the ceremony to tell me.
I sniffled hard, forcing back the tears burning behind my eyes as I turned toward the door. My throat felt tight, my chest heavy.
Only one destination came to mind.
Ronan. My boyfriend.
He was the only one who could calm me. The only one who could comfort me right now that I felt like my entire world was collapsing around me. I couldn’t think straight about tomorrow. I didn’t want to.
When I opened the door, Mother didn’t even look at me. She didn’t notice me leave. Even when Father was still around, she never cared. Sometimes, I wondered if she was truly my mother. She provided food and shelter, yes, the basics that convinced me she must be. But apart from that, I had suffered emotional and verbal abuse from her for years, abuse she never acknowledged and never cared about.

A few minutes passed before I reached the entrance of Ronan’s house. Relief washed through me the moment I stopped in front of it. At least I was somewhere peaceful. At least here, no one would berate me for being an omega or blame me for being the reason she “wasted her little wealth” raising me.
To my mother, if I had been born a beta or higher and with a wolf, I could have found a mate or become a mistress to a wealthy man to take care of her. But no, I was unlucky in everything, just like my father. Useless and worthless.
I didn’t want to hear her tormenting voice again tonight. I needed a change to breathe before facing tomorrow.
As I stepped closer, I noticed a brand–new car parked in front of Ronan’s garage. A sleek sports car. My stomach tightened.
Last week had been our second–year anniversary and only a few days had passed. Ronan hadn’t mentioned anything about a new car. Seeing it there made me uneasy and curious, but I shoved the feeling aside and walked toward the door.
I reached the doorstep, my hand hovering over the door, when a voice hit me.
No. I whispered it to myself.
There was no way.
I tried telling myself I was hallucinating, that my mind was playing tricks because of how overwhelmed I was. But no matter how I tried to deny it, there was no way I could dismiss the voices I was hearing.
Emma's POV I opened my eyes, and to my shock, I realized I wasn’t in my room. The stark white walls of the unfamiliar room confirmed it. At first, I wanted to dismiss it. It didn’t matter whether the walls were white or dark, I felt groggy and hungover from everything I had drunk the night before.I stretched on the bed, only to freeze. A figure blocked me. As I blinked and tried to focus, I realized it was a man on the other side of the bed. My chest tightened, panic and disbelief mixing with the vivid memories of the previous night. The moans, my whimpers, the soul-wrenching desire I had surrendered to, the movements and rhythm that had left me trembling… All of it replayed in my mind. He had given me exactly what I craved but couldn’t ask for, shrouded in shame I had carried for too long.“Who are you?” he snapped, his voice sharp, eyes flashing crimson with anger as he stared at me.“What are you doing in my room?” he added, his words laced with arrogance, tone dripping with cock
Emma's POV I downed the fifth glass of alcohol I had been served at the bar, the bartender pouring according to my request, the number of glasses dictated by the money I had paid. There was still some left in the glass, but I was already too drunk to continue.“Are you alright, young lady?” the bartender asked, approaching me at the counter. I ignored him. The neon lights burned my eyes, the loud, pulsating music rattled my skull and I didn’t care about anyone or anything. The tears didn’t stop. Each time they fell, I couldn’t bring myself to wipe them away. Tonight was supposed to be the eve of my mother’s remarriage, but here I was, drowning my misery in alcohol, hoping that the burn would dull the ache inside.I stumbled to my feet, the smell of booze rippling through the air, clawing at my nose. I couldn’t stand the laughter and dancing anymore . Nor the false joy of the crowd. All I wanted was to rest my head, to cry alone until my eyes refused to shed another drop.I made my wa
Emma's POV I hesitated before pushing the door open, my heart still in my hands, unable to believe the sounds I had heard from inside. At first, they had been muffled, but standing there long enough made them clear and impossible to ignore.Breathless moans. The heavy grunts of a man. My mind scrambled for excuses. It had to be Ronan’s friends, I told myself.Ronan was part of the Night Owls racers group, famous in the racing circuit—tattooed, tough and chisele faced men. Everything about him I cherished. Perhaps one of his friends was here with their girlfriend, I reasoned. Maybe he had let them make out in his house because he wanted to be close to them. He had promised me he’d use his influence in the group to help me find my missing father. Maybe this was part of that. And perhaps the sleek sports car I had seen in the garage belonged to one of them too as there was no way Ronan could own something like that, given his modest background. But as I pushed the door open, my world t
