Pierce pov

Pierce's knuckles whitened on the steering wheel; his hands clasped the wheel so tightly that the leather steering wheel groaned in protest.

The road whipped past him in bands of gray and brown, but all he saw was Rosa's face, white, her eyes flat and wide as the doctor delivered the news.

One of the triplets. Gone. Just like that.

His foot pressed harder on the accelerator. The engine roared, but it didn't smooth the pain he had seen in her eyes, of Rosa's sobs or the way her body had crumpled when they told her.

She had whispered his name like a prayer, like he could somehow undo what had been done. But he couldn't. He could only do this and that is drive toward the people who had taken their child from them.

As he cornered into Rosa's home, his heart raced with more anger.

How dare they do such a thing to a sweet, nice soul like her? He passed, the streets filled with trees and plants just the same way Rosa had described them when he was talking about his childhood.
