Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Beginning

17 years ago, Leo Adams, a 29-year-old dark-skinned man, married Zoe Nelson, a 24-year-old fair-skinned woman, and they had a beautiful baby girl with brown sparkling eyes named Olima Adams. But after Olima’s birth, Zoe had complications.

Zoe cried because she wanted to give her husband more children, but he assured her that his love for her would not change.

Two years later, Leo told his wife that he intended to marry a second wife who would bear him more children, especially a son to inherit his properties and carry his name, rather than adopt a son, since Olima was a girl.

Zoe became emotional and afraid that another woman coming into her home would turn her husband’s heart against her. She spoke to her best friend, Gina Edwards, and asked her to accept and marry her husband.

Zoe and Gina had been best friends in the past; they attended the same high school and lived on the island where the billionaire families lived. They remained friends even after Zoe married.

Zoe never knew that Gina secretly admired her husband, and she proposed that Gina accept and marry Leo.

Gina wasted no time. She accepted the marriage and moved into the white mansion to live with them.

But as soon as Gina arrived, she changed and started quarreling with Zoe.

Gina told Zoe to leave the master bedroom so that she and Leo could use it, since Zoe could not bear another child for Leo.

Leo was shocked at Gina’s changed attitude; she dared to quarrel with Zoe and even called Zoe a witch for refusing to leave the master bedroom.

Leo became annoyed and threatened to divorce Gina the following day, but Gina calmed down and switched back to the good friend she had been to Zoe. She begged Zoe to plead with their husband not to divorce her.

Leo told Gina, “How dare you come into my house today and quarrel with your best friend, Zoe. I regret marrying you, Gina. Olima will inherit all my properties tomorrow. Even if she marries a man and changes her surname to her husband’s, she will still be my daughter. So get ready to leave my house tomorrow. Our marriage is over!”

Gina begged Zoe to plead with their husband not to divorce her, and Zoe sighed, because she was the one who had begged Gina to accept and marry her husband.

Zoe pleaded on Gina’s behalf, and Leo allowed Gina stayed in the mansion with them, but in a separate bedroom.

Gina hated Zoe from that day onward. She avoided speaking with Zoe and felt that Zoe and their husband had conspired to bring her into the mansion only to show her how lovely a couple they were.

---

One day, Gina went into Zoe’s room and pleaded with her to allow their husband to spend a night with her, since that was why Leo married her too.

Zoe waited for Leo to arrive home that night and asked him to spend the night with Gina in her bedroom, to see if Gina would bear him a son, which was the reason he married Gina.

Leo refused. He was avoiding Gina and wanted nothing to do with her, since he regretted marrying her. But after Zoe sent him away, Leo had no choice but to spend the night in Gina’s bedroom, and he made love to her.

---

A month later, Gina remained jealous and continued hating Zoe, after seeing that Leo loved Zoe far more than her. She had thought Leo would love only her and push Zoe aside for her inability to bear him more children.

Instead, Leo pushed Gina aside. He refused to eat Gina’s food and avoided her.

Gina quarreled with Zoe again, and that annoyed Leo. He finally brought divorce papers home.

Leo ordered Gina to sign the divorce papers, but Gina refused and told her husband, “I’m pregnant.”

Leo could not send Gina away with his child growing in her womb, so he allowed her to stay in the mansion with them, but on one condition: Gina would move into the boys’ quarters, away from the white mansion, and she would not quarrel with Zoe again.

Gina accepted, because she had no other option and did not want to leave the house.

Eight months later, Gina gave birth to a baby girl named Mia Adams, but Leo never came to her again to see if they could still bear more children, especially a son.

14 years later, Gina’s hatred for Leo and Zoe grew worse. In her fourteen years of marriage, Leo had touched her only once and made love to her, because he claimed he regretted marrying her.

Gina knew she could not leave Leo’s house and remarry. The townspeople already mocked her for accepting to marry her best friend’s husband, and her parents had not supported the marriage at first. But Gina had thought Leo would love her. He did not; he avoided her instead.

Gina knew that if she went out and got pregnant to see if she could bear a son for Leo, he would know the child was not his. He accepted Mia living in the main mansion whenever Mia wanted only because Mia was his biological daughter, and because Olima wanted a younger sister to play with.

Gina’s heart turned cold, and she contacted a truck driver to ram into Leo and his wife’s car. She knew they were going to Lemon Hills High School for the graduation ceremony. Olima was graduating from college, while Mia was moving into a senior class.

Gina later confirmed from the driver that the job was successful, and she killed the truck driver too, to hide her secret forever.

Three months after the burial ceremony ended, Gina moved back into the main mansion that her late husband and his admirable wife had sent her away from. She sacked all the housemaids and turned Olima into her servant, withdrawing her from her tutorial classes.

The family members who had been silent began visiting the main mansion to find out who would take over the late Mr. Leo’s wealth and oil company, but Gina was a brutal woman. She arrested all her in-laws and accused them of killing her late husband and his admirable wife.

The arrested in-laws had to bail themselves out, and they signed an undertaking never to disturb Gina and her children again.

Gina then contacted Mr. Leo’s lawyer to learn about his will, because she remembered that Leo had told her that Olima would inherit all his properties.

Gina could have killed Olima, but she did not want her only daughter Mia to be alone in the big house without a sister. So Gina decided not to kill Olima. Instead, she turned Olima into her lifetime maid, knowing that no one would come to Olima’s rescue.

When the lawyer arrived, he told Gina, “I'm sorry, Madam. But my late client, Mr. Leo’s will cannot be changed. The will states that the company should be given to Olima Adams when she turns 24 years old.”

Gina became annoyed and sent the lawyer away. She thought of how she could change the will so that the properties would become hers and her daughter’s alone.
