CHAPTER 1

Leo Adams had married Zoe Nelson, and she had given birth to a beautiful baby girl with sparkling brown eyes, named Olima Adams. But after Olima’s birth, Zoe suffered complications.

Zoe cried because she wanted to give her husband more children, but he assured her that his love for her would not change.

Two years later, Leo spoke to his wife about his intention to marry a second wife who would bear him more children—especially a son who would inherit all his properties and carry his name—rather than adopting a son, since Olima was a girl.

Zoe became emotional and fearful that another woman would enter her home and turn her husband against her. She therefore spoke to her best friend, Gina Edwards, and asked her to accept marrying her husband.

Zoe and Gina had been best friends in the past; they had attended the same high school and lived on the island where the billionaire families resided. They had remained friends even after Zoe’s marriage.

Zoe did not know that Gina had long secretly admired her husband. She proposed that Gina accept and marry Leo.

Gina wasted no time in accepting the proposal and moved into the white mansion to live with them.

Yet as soon as Gina arrived, she changed. She began quarrelling with Zoe.

Gina told Zoe to leave the master bedroom so that she and Leo could use it, since Zoe could not bear another child for him.

Leo was shocked by Gina’s altered attitude; she had dared to quarrel with Zoe and had even called her a witch for refusing to vacate the master bedroom.

Leo grew annoyed and threatened to divorce Gina the following day.

Gina quickly calmed down and reverted to the good friend she had once been to Zoe. She begged Zoe to plead with their husband not to divorce her.

Leo said to Gina, ‘How dare you come into my house today and quarrel with your best friend, Zoe? I regret marrying you, Gina. Olima will inherit all my properties tomorrow. Even if she marries and takes her husband’s surname, she will still be my daughter. Get ready to leave my house tomorrow, as our marriage is over.’

Gina begged Zoe to plead with their husband not to divorce her.

Zoe sighed; after all, she had been the one who had begged Gina to marry her husband.

Zoe pleaded on Gina’s behalf, and Gina was allowed to remain in the mansion, though in a separate bedroom.

From that day onwards Gina hated Zoe. She avoided speaking to her and felt that Zoe and their husband had conspired to bring her into the mansion merely to flaunt their happy marriage.

---

One day Gina went into Zoe’s room and pleaded with her to allow their husband to spend a night with her, since that was why Leo had married her.

Zoe waited for Leo to arrive home that night and asked him to spend the night with Gina in her bedroom, so that Gina might bear him a son—the reason he had married her.

Leo refused at first; he had been avoiding Gina and wanted nothing to do with her, since he regretted the marriage. But after Zoe insisted, he had no choice but to spend the night in Gina’s bedroom, where he made love to her.

----

A month later, Gina was still jealous and continued to hate Zoe. She had seen that Leo loved Zoe far more than her and realised he would not abandon his first wife for her inability to bear more children.

Instead, Leo shunned Gina. He refused to eat her food and avoided her entirely.

Gina quarrelled with Zoe again. This finally angered Leo, who brought home divorce papers.

Leo ordered Gina to sign them, but she refused. ‘I’m pregnant,’ she told her husband.

Leo could not send Gina away while she carried his child. He allowed her to stay in the mansion on the condition that she live in the boys’ quarters, away from the main white mansion, and that she never quarrel with Zoe again.

Gina accepted; she had no other option and did not want to leave the house.

Eight months later, Gina gave birth to a baby girl, named Mia Adams. Leo never visited her again to try for more children—especially a son.

----

**Fourteen Years Later**

Gina’s hatred for Leo and Zoe had grown far worse. In her fourteen years of marriage, Leo had touched her only once—the night he had made love to her—claiming he regretted the marriage.

Gina knew she could not leave Leo’s house to remarry. The townspeople already mocked her for marrying her best friend’s husband, and her parents had opposed the match from the start. She had hoped Leo would love her, but he had avoided her instead.

Gina also knew that if she became pregnant by another man in the hope of bearing a son for Leo, he would realise the child was not his. He had accepted Mia into the main mansion (whenever the girl wished to stay) only because she was his biological daughter, and because Olima wanted a younger sister to play with.

Gina’s heart turned cold. She contacted a truck driver and paid him to ram into Leo and his wife’s car; she knew they were travelling to Lemon-hill High School for the graduation ceremony. Olima was graduating from college, while Mia was entering the senior class.

Later, Gina confirmed the success of the job with the driver, then killed him too, to conceal her secret forever.

Three months after the burial, Gina moved back into the main mansion from which her late husband and his beloved wife had banished her. She sacked all the three maids and turned Olima into her personal servant, forcing her to withdraw from her tutorial classes.

Family members who had previously remained silent began visiting the mansion to discover who would inherit the late Mr. Leo’s wealth and oil company. Gina, however, proved brutal: she had all her in-laws arrested and accused them of murdering her late husband and his wife.

The arrested relatives bailed themselves out and signed undertakings never to disturb Gina or her family again.

Gina then contacted Leo’s lawyer to learn the contents of the will, remembering that Leo had said Olima would inherit everything.

Gina could have killed Olima too, but she did not want her only daughter, Mia, to be alone in the large house without a sister. Instead, Gina decided to keep Olima alive and turn her into a lifetime maid, confident that no one would come to her rescue.

When the lawyer arrived, he told Gina, ‘Mr. Leo’s will cannot be changed. The clause regarding the company states that it should be given to Olima Adams when she turns twenty-four years old.’

Gina became furious and began plotting how she could alter the will so that the estate would belong to her and her daughter alone.
