Nathaniel Lee, a janitor, never complained about the insults and mistreatment he received from his wife's family. There was a reason for that. It wasn't that he didn't have the courage or ability to retaliate. He just had to wait for the right moment. Why did he have to go to such lengths to endure all that unpleasant treatment? What was it about his past that he kept secret, even from his wife?

Chapter 1

“So … whose contact number are you going to give me, huh?”

Nathan clenched his hands, looking hesitant.

The officer, who was growing impatient waiting for Nathan’s answer, tapped his pen against the prison cell bars. “Hurry up!”

“Do you think you’re the only one I have to worry about?”

Actually, Nathan didn’t want to bother anyone, but he was forced to answer, “My wife. I’ll give you my wife’s phone number.”

As soon as Nathan gave his wife’s contact number, the officer on duty called her immediately.

In less than two hours, Nathan was released on bail thanks to his wife’s guarantee.

The twenty-nine-year-old man walked out of the police station with quick steps.

He smiled broadly when he saw Angela, his wife, leaning against the car while staring at him with an annoyed expression on her beautiful face.

“Angela.”

Angela snorted in annoyance, “Get in!”

The woman opened the driver’s door and got into the red car. Nathan didn’t argue and immediately got into the car, sitting next to Angela.

“Angela, honey. I’m sorry.”

Angela ignored him and focused solely on driving.

Nathan didn’t give up, “Honey, it’s not my fault. I was framed.”

“Oh really? Then why were you arrested, huh?”

The woman didn’t give Nathan a chance to answer.

“Nathan, don’t you know I have an important meeting today? Why won’t you stop causing trouble for me?”

“I’m truly innocent. That woman is slandering me.”

“Then explain yourself!” Angela ordered without turning to face the man she’d married two years ago.

Nathan began to tell his story, “I was cleaning the garden as usual. Then, I saw a woman slip and fall. So I-”

“You were tempted, is that it? Was she pretty? Prettier than me?” Angela cut him off impatiently.

Nathan smiled, “You’re jealous, aren’t you?”

“Damn it, Nathan. You ….”

Nathan raised his hand. “All right, all right. I won’t joke around anymore. I was just helping her sit on the park bench and putting her shoes on, but suddenly a man showed up.”

Nathan furrowed his brow and recounted everything that happened without omitting or adding a single word.

“Get your filthy hands off my fiancée’s legs!”

Nathan immediately turned his head toward the voice that sounded cold and full of rage.

The man who had just arrived was dressed very neatly and elegantly. Nathan knew right away that the man must be from the upper class.

He hurried over to the woman sitting on the park bench. He shot a brief, disgusted glance at Nathan, who was standing there holding a broom in his right hand.

He could easily tell what the shabbily dressed man’s profession was.

“Hugo.” The beautiful woman called out, her eyes wide with surprise.

“I’m sorry, Sir. I didn’t mean to-”

“What’s wrong with you, Amanda?” The man named Hugo completely ignored Nathan and touched the beautiful woman’s shoulder.

“I slipped, and this man ….”

Amanda didn’t finish her sentence and instead lowered her head.

Hugo frowned, growing suspicious.

Meanwhile, Nathan, feeling uneasy, hurriedly explained, “Sir, I was just helping this young lady sit down and putting her shoes on.”

“L-lie! He’s lying, honey!” Amanda stammered.

Without looking at Nathan, Amanda grabbed Hugo’s hand, “He tried to molest me, honey. He touched my leg and ….”

“No, Sir. That’s not true. I didn’t do that. I was just-”

“BASTARD!” Hugo growled angrily.

Hugo grabbed Nathan by the collar and was about to punch him. But a man who had just arrived quickly stopped him, “Young Master, don’t!”

“Bernard, don’t you know what this janitor just did?”

“I-I … I’m sorry, Young Master. Whatever it was, we’d better just report him to the police. What do you think, Young Master?” Bernard suggested.

Hugo furrowed his brow, looking hesitant.

Bernard whispered softly, “Remember that the Master is watching you, Young Master. The police … will surely handle this matter well.”

Hugo’s expression suddenly changed. “All right, then … you handle him. Make sure he’s punished severely.”

“All right, Young Master.” Bernard sighed in relief.

“Amanda, let’s go!” Hugo took his girlfriend’s hand.

After the couple left, Bernard ordered several guards to drag Nathan to the police station. He was arrested on charges of harassing park visitors.

After hearing the story, Angela slammed the steering wheel to vent her frustration.

“That’s why I want a husband with high social status.”

“Angela, I-”

“Because you come from the lower class, you’re easily bullied. Why did Grandpa make me marry you?” Angela grumbled.

Nathan sighed softly.

He couldn’t blame the beautiful woman. After all, his marriage to Angela wasn’t based on even a shred of love.

He married Angela as part of a deal with Ian Jackson, Angela’s grandfather, after Ian saved his life nearly three years ago.

Ian knew Nathan’s true identity, but he promised not to tell anyone about it. In return, however, Ian asked Nathan to marry his granddaughter.

Nathan closed his eyes, trying not to think about his complicated past.

But suddenly, Nathan’s brow furrowed when he realized Angela had taken the left lane.

“Angela, you’re going the wrong way.”

“We have to go to Uncle John’s house.”

Hearing the name of his wife’s family patriarch mentioned, Nathan froze in his seat.

“There’s a dinner party.”

Nathan liked that even less. There were clearly a thousand and one reasons why he didn’t want to meet his wife’s entire family, especially since Ian Jackson had passed away two years ago.

Nathan watched as Angela turned into the gas station. “Go take a shower and change your clothes!”

Angela pointed to the back seat. There was a large bag there. Nathan immediately grabbed the bag without asking any questions and hurried into the public restroom at the gas station.

About thirty minutes later, they arrived at the Jackson family’s large home.

Nathan saw many cars parked in the driveway of the luxurious house.

“What kind of dinner party is this, anyway? Why are so many guests invited?”

“Even if I told you, you wouldn’t understand.” Angela said curtly and walked ahead, leaving Nathan to sigh in resignation.

The man had grown accustomed to Angela’s sharp and cold demeanor ever since they met. However, Nathan had never once protested against it.

Although Angela had been forced to marry him and always acted harshly, she had never once betrayed him.

As soon as Nathan stepped inside the house, he found at least ten people he didn’t recognize in the living room.

As he was about to catch up with his wife, who was talking to a butler, he heard a man say, “Wow! I thought you weren’t coming, Nathan.”

“I thought you still had to work overtime cleaning up the trash in the garden,” a woman standing near the man replied .

They were Lucy and Harry, the children of John Jackson, his wife’s uncle.

“My shift is over,” Nathan replied briefly.

The man turned his head and was about to approach his wife, but once again he heard Lucy say, “Hey, wait a minute! Why do I smell something unpleasant?”

“You’re right, Lucy.” Harry rubbed his nose. “Nathan, you … haven’t taken a shower yet, have you?”

He raised his voice on purpose so that everyone in the room could hear them.

From Nathan’s left, a woman whispered to her friend, “Hey, is that … the Jackson family’s son-in-law who works as a groundskeeper at the park?”

“Looks like it. Goodness, it’s getting really smelly in here,” her friend replied.

Nathan clenched his fists, glaring at his wife’s two cousins, who were smiling mockingly at him

Just as they began discussing the pungent odor, John Jackson, who had just entered the main living room, looked at Nathan with a raised eyebrow. “Who gave you permission to stand there, Nathan?”
