Derrick spoke quietly on the phone, moving farther away so she didn't hear what was being said.

Sheila turned back to the stove and continued staring absently. Hurt pulsed within her at the sudden distance he showcased. How he went from thoughtful and kind to distant in just a little over an hour was a mystery she couldn't solve, but it was one that hurt like hell. She knew it was too good to be true, so she had no one to blame but herself, for letting her guard down.

Sheila went through the motion of cooking in a robotic fashion, no longer thrilled by the prospect of preparing something amazing for him. She just wanted to get out of there. She would head over to Zoey's as soon as she was done here, maybe she would also get lost in a bottle of alcohol or two, since she was suddenly an expert at making bad decisions.
