HAZEL
"I don't get it. If we're talking about the same criminal then why not just put the suspect behind the bars?" I almost screamed in frustration.
No body said anything.
Right.
I took my jacket and stormed out. What the fuck is wrong with them? Just because the suspect is related to the country's biggest billionaire, we can't let him go.
Damn rich people. I fucking hate them.
"Hey princess, calm down." I heard the familiar voice. I snapped my head and found Justin walking out with two cups of coffee in his hand.
I took it from him and sipped on the coffee. "Don't call me that."
"Why? Aren't you princess?" He grinned.
I rolled my eyes. Jerk.
"You know, you need to calm down. Although you're our team caption, we just can't afford to lose our job, do we? When it comes to money and power, we can't just do anything even if we're detectives in the crime branch." He sighed.
"That's the point. I'm not doing just anything. He's the fucking suspect for killing three people, how can we let him go?" I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration.
"We don't have any solid evidence yet, Hazel. Let's work on it a little more." He added, patting my shoulder.
I nodded.
I looked at Justin who was now staring at the clear sky. I know him from a very long time. We went to the same high school. And God, it's been almost ten years since we graduated high school. If someone would've told me that we'd become best friends, I would've laughed at their poor imagination. I mean I was the most popular girl of our school and he was the most popular boy, football's team caption. We were always the desired couple and everyone thought that one day we'd end up in relationship and we did but as best friends. This stupid joint civil services because of me. He had no idea about his future and when I told him that it's my dream to became a detective, he smiled, asking me to teach him how to clear the civil services exam. We went to the different college in the same city and after that we used to study together for whole night.
"You know, you should be a model instead of cop, you're so handsome that it hurts my eyes." I told him.
He rolled his eyes. "Stop with the sass. And let's to go the club tonight, it's been a while."
I crinkled my nose. "Dude practically every second girl throws herself on you, I'm not going to be your bodyguard."
That's the truth. He's indeed charming. And a hot cop, well who doesn't want this?
"Please, princess." He whined.
Wow. Here we go again.
"Fuck off."
"I heard from somewhere that our suspect would be in the party too." He whistled.
I looked at him in surprise. "Dude, I freaking love you." I grinned.
"Man, after wearing the police uniform for every day, I feel so exposed wearing this tight little dress." I groaned as we walked inside the club.
He snickered. "Shut up, we're here on a mission, stop complaining."
I clicked my tongue. "Lucky for you to say who wears denim and shirt."
We went to the bar and ordered a light drink and when I looked around, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Every fucking woman in the room was already darting her eyes on Justin.
"I don't like when you get all the attention." I murmured.
"Says the one who used to be most popular in high school." He retorted.
"Man, that time I was pretty. I didn't age like a fine wine unlike some people."
He laughed, sipping on his drink and looking around.
"If the suspect doesn't get here then I'm going to hook up with any guy from this club. I need some entertainment in my life." I groaned.
"What about your boyfriend, whatever his name was?"
I gave him flat look. "We broke up last week."
"This was your fourth breakup in last three months, right?" He laughed.
I pressed my lips shut. Asshole.
"Oh, fuck. Look at the guy in black hoodie, he has that tattoo on his wrist."
I snapped my head and found a figure walking towards the washroom.
"Let's go."
We both walked to the washroom behind him. And as if he noticed us, he walked straight to the bathroom and locked the door.
"Are you okay, babe? I told you not to drink too much." Justin said.
I rolled my eyes. Right. We've to act.
"I'm so sorry, I feel like puking." I replied.
After few minutes of our act, the door unlocks and he finally walks out. Justin grabs him and put handcuffs around his wrist. "You are under arret for illegal possession of drugs." He tells him as Justin took out the packet of white powder from that man's pocket.
I smirked. Justin's observation skills are on point.
"Also, you're the suspect for murders that recently took place." I added.
The man had a face mask and hoodie. So, we weren't able to see his face but the tattoo on his wrist said everything.
We took him to the police station and put him in the detention room. Everybody else in the station looked at us in confusion. I slipped out of my heels and tied my hair in a pony. Okay. Let's do this.
"Remove your mask." I said once I seated in front of him.
He didn't respond.
So, I looked at Justin and gestured him to do the honour.
He nodded and in no minute, removed that man's face mask and the hoodie's cap covering his head and when he did so, our jaw dropped to the floor.
"You're a girl?" I asked, not believing my eyes.
"Lend me your phone, I need to call someone." She said, rolling her eyes.
"Name." I asked.
"Ava Barrette." She replied in a heartbeat.
"Age."
"Twenty-one."
"Why did you kill them?" I asked, now getting on the straight point.
"I didn't."
"Call whoever you want. Let me see how you get out of here." I passed her my phone and crossed my arms over my chest.
"Dude, this is so fucked up. Her tattoo matches with the one we have on photograph." Justin whispered in my ear.
After she called someone, I took the phone from her when she finished calling someone.
Me and Justin walked out of the detention room and he sighed. "Let's check everything once again."
I nodded and opened the case file. The tattoo was indeed same and since we've been trailing him, I mean her, from so long, how could we be this wrong?
"Look at the details, the hoodie's same too." I spoke.
Justin let out a frustrated breath. "I don't know but one thing I'm sure about is that we're fucked."
"What?"
He gestured me towards the door. I looked up and saw tens of men in black suit lining either side of the police station. All the higher up officials from the headquarter came to me and Justin, looking at us in anger.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?" Chief of police gritted his teeth.
"We got call from the ministry of justice. We're screwed and that's all because of you." Another higher officer yelled in a low whisper.
My eyes shifted to the men in black suit who were most probably bodyguards.
I rolled my eyes and waited for the richest man to arrive and grace us with his presence. Note my sarcasm.
And then came a man in navy blue Armani suit as his bodyguards with their guns became even more attentive.
I tilted my head and when I caught the glimpse of his face, the floor beneath me almost slipped.
H-How could this be possible? Am I dreaming? The billionaire Atlas barrette is the Atlas Barrette whom I knew?
"We're extremely sorry Mr. Barrette." Chief apologized.
"Atlas." The girl rushed to him, wrapping her arms around him. He brushed her hair.
"Can I know why my sister is the suspect of murder?" He asked.
She's, his sister?
"We're sorry. There's a little misunderstanding." Chief spoke.
I stared at Atlas Barrette and all of sudden anger shoot through my pulses. I didn't think twice before I went to him and punched straight across his face.
"What the-?" He stopped in middle when he saw me. He froze at his place, his eyes flickering with many emotions.
His bodyguards pointed their gun at me all at once and all the officers in the station looked at me in shock.
"Asshole." I spat, clenching my fist.
"So, you're the heir of Barrette group, huh?" I laughed, my jaw ticking.
He didn't say anything. Just kept on staring at me.
I pull out the gun under my dress and pointed straight at him. His bodyguards were about to come in front of him when he gestured them through his hand to stop.
"You know what, Mr. Atlas Barrette. I can happily spend my lifetime locked up behind the bars after killing you." I said, my voice full of venom.
All of sudden, Justin stalked to him and punched him even harder than I did. His lips bruised and blood started oozing out. "Motherfucker." Justin spat, throwing another punch at him.
I grabbed Justin by his shoulder and shook my head. "Don't. He doesn't even deserve our anger." Justin nodded, taking a step back from him.
I held his hand and was about to walk out of the station when I turned back. "Let it be our last help to you, we'll stop this fucking case. Just get the fuck out of our sight." I said, calmly. "Also, your sister's possessing marijuana, don't you dare to say that we arrested her without any reason." I added.
TEN YEARS BACK HAZEL “Hey, wake up.” I heard a familiar voice whispering next to me. I parted my eyelids and saw Justin tapping my shoulder. “What happened?” “It’s your turn to deliver the English project and yet you’re sleeping.” He pointed to the smart board.I quickly smoothen my hair and walked up to the podium. Rounds of hooting followed me and I couldn’t help but flush in all shades of red.Our homeroom teacher cleared his throat and gestured me to continue my project.I opened my ppt and proudly started the slide show. I’ve modified my project last night. Earlier I wrote that my dream is to become someone who’s loved by everyone. It was good with the words that I’ve molded everything. I would’ve gotten A+ for it easily but I never wished to become that. It was a lie to get good grades and to impress everyone in the school but after I talked to Atlas and heard his dream, I couldn’t stop myself from re-writing my whole project. So I made the project which says that my dream i
TEN YEARS BACKHAZEL “Have you completed English project. The due date is tomorrow?” I asked to divert the topic. He bit on his lips and exhaled. “Yes.”I narrowed my eyes. “You’re lying, aren’t you?”“Yes.” He added, not looking at me.This boy!“Do you’ve a laptop?” I asked to which he simply shook his head.Okay.“Come with me to the terrace.” I said to him grabbing my laptop and walking upstairs to the terrace.I looked up at the sky which was full of stars and smiled when cool breeze touched my skin. I sat on the floor crossing my legs, asking Atlas to grab a sit next to me. Opening the word file, I looked at him. “Tell me about your dreams.” “I don’t have one.” He answered.I pointed at the stars and he followed my lead. “For a moment, forget everything about yourself. Forget about what kind of life you’ve lived or what kind of life you’re expecting in the future. Just think that you’re among those shiny little stars and you’ve given a chance to live the life however you wan
TEN YEARS BACK HAZEL “I’m sorry I’m late.” I breathed out once I practically ran to my car and found Atlas near it. I almost forgot that I’ve told him to wait. Unlocking the car, I asked him to sit which he gladly did. Once I started the engine, I looked at my wrist watch which read half past six. Shit. He must be waiting for three hours or so. I lost track of time with Justin and later he accompanied me to the library where I picked out few fictions for him along with some for Atlas. “How was your date?” His sudden question caught me off guard.“How do you know about it?” “Whole school knows.” He shrugged.“Right.” I let out an awkward laugh. “It was fun. Justin’s nice.” I added, excluding the detail that it wasn’t anything like date. God! This is so embarrassing! He must be thinking that I left him to wait for hours just because I was busy on my date. Well technically he isn’t wrong. We reached my home and I unlocked the door before stepping inside. “Freshen up, I’ll prepare t
TEN YEARS BACK HAZELI tucked the hairlock behind my ear and smiled. “The coffee tastes good here.” Justin smiled back. “Mhmm.” “You’re okay with going on dates with me, right?” He asked, passing me the cookies.I blushed. “Any girl from our school would die to go on date with you.”He leaned into his chair and smirked. “You look cute when you blush, you know that right?” My cheeks heated further. God! He flirts like a pro. “So, tell me something about yourself.” “I like white lilies and lavender fragrance. My favorite color is pink and I like rain. I prefer salad over anything. My favorite movie is twilight and..” “No. Shit.” But before I could complete my sentence, he cut me in middle.I raised my eyebrows and looked at him in nervousness. “I know that’s not you. So tell me about the real Hazel not the one she pretends to be.” I blinked, not knowing what to say. What does he mean by real Hazel?“And how do you know that what I told you was not real me?” I couldn’t help but
10 YEARS BACK “I’m sorry.” I apologized to Justin once I saw him. I totally forgot that he asked me for dinner last night. “No, problem. It’s pleasure to be stood by you.” He smiled. “Want to share table in cafeteria?” He asked.I smile, apologetically. “I’m so sorry, I really have something important to do.”“Woah man, you banging the school’s princess, huh?” Someone from his football team shouted from the back bench. My face turned beet red as everyone on the class started screaming and whistling. Football’s caption and popular girl. This is going to be part of our yearbook if we end up dating. “After school, coffee would be nice.” I whispered, trying my best to stop myself from smiling.“My pleasure, princess.” He winked. I went back to my seat and as I expected Alyssa and Sia were not happy. I faked a smile at them which they didn’t even bother to return. I turned around, cautiously to see Atlas who sat on his usual last seat near the window. His gaze met mine and I qui
HAZEL My head pounded as I opened my eyes, trying not to groan as a sudden nausea hit me.Remind me not to get drunk again.I get up lazily, rubbing my eyes and unconsciously I was about to roam my hand over the nightstand to find the water bottle but before that, someone handed me the glass full of water. I shot up my brows and found Atlas sitting on the edge of the bed. I took the glass from him and muttered ‘thank you’ under my breath when he passed me the Advil. I gulped it down my throat and walked straight out of the room to kitchen, ignoring him who followed me.“I’ve prepared a hangover soup for you.” He said, gesturing me to the table. I wanted to refuse the offer but it looked tempting. I really wated to eat something hot and delicious to cure my headache. I sat on the table and ate the chicken soup with rice noodles. It wasn’t tasty though. Quite bland but a bit salty. Anyhow it was edible. “How’s it?”“Not good but edible.” I replied, not bothering to act nice and lie
