SHANE

By weekend my anger had burned itself out like a dying flame, leaving nothing but ashes behind. No rage. No fury. Just guilt; thick, suffocating, inescapable guilt. Making every breath feel heavy.

I sat in the private corner of the club on Saturday night with Liam, nursing a drink that tasted like nothing. The lights were dim, the music low, the hum of conversations distant.

Liam sat across from me, swirling the whiskey in his glass. He’d been talking; trying, at least but I had been giving him nothing but monotone grunts and clipped replies. I couldn’t even blame him for sounding irritated.

“Shane,” he said finally, leaning forward, “what do you want to do now?”

I stared at my half-empty glass. My hand felt heavy as I set it on the table. The ice clinked softly, like punctuation.

“I need to look for Carrie,” I said, my voice low but steady. “I must find her.”

Liam’s eyes narrowed with something between understanding and relief.

“I will call the new PI I’m using now,” I added.

CARRIE By the time night settled over the city, the apartment had gone quiet in that soft, comforting way I loved. Leo had finally drifted off for his evening nap not too long ago, and after a long day at the station, all I wanted was a moment to breathe. But I was also expecting company; Anders had texted me earlier that he would come around, and I had already told him not to bring dinner. I insisted I would cook for us. It had been a while since I made a proper meal for someone other than myself or the baby, and somehow, I wanted to do that for him. It felt… right. The nanny left a little after six, waving her usual goodbye as she wrapped her scarf tighter around her neck. Right after I locked the door behind her, the doorbell rang again.I blinked, surprised. “He’s early,” I murmured to myself as I walked to the door.Sure enough, when I checked the peephole, Anders was standing there with a wide smile and his hands filled with things as usual.I opened the door. “You’re earlier t

SHANEMonday midday, I was sitting behind my desk and I was supposed to be reviewing a pile of contracts on my desk; endorsements, quarterly budgets, expansion proposals but the words kept blurring together, my mind refusing to stay in focus.Guilt had a strange weight. Heavy yet hollow at the same time. I had been carrying it like a stone under my ribs since.I still saw Nathaniel’s frail face when I closed my eyes.I still heard Cathy’s cold, vicious confession. And I still replayed every stupid, blind thing I had ever done to push Carrie away. The more I thought about it, the more it felt like I had been sleepwalking for months and finally woken up, only to realize I had lost the only person who ever truly held my heart with care.I rubbed a hand down my face and forced myself to return to work. If I didn’t finish them before the afternoon meeting, the board would be on my neck for the next week.I had barely managed to sign the second document when my phone rang. The sound jolted

CARRIE By Monday morning, I felt lighter than I had in weeks. Leo was completely fine now. His fever was gone, the ear infection that had kept him restless and whiny had cleared, and my baby was back to his usual self; laughing, gurgling, and tugging at my hair with tiny, determined hands. Just seeing him bounce around the nursery earlier that morning, cheeks flushed with health, had lifted a weight I didn’t realize I’d been carrying.I walked into the station with a bounce in my step, feeling the crisp morning air and the subtle hum of the building energize me. Normally Mondays were the worst, but today I felt… good. Really good. The kind of good that comes when things fall into place, at least for a little while.I greeted a few staff along the way. “Morning,” I said with a genuine smile. The words felt effortless. People returned the greeting with a similar warmth, and it was nice not to feel the usual tension hovering over the first day of the workweek.By noon, I found myself in

CARRIE It was Thursday afternoon, I sat in front of my desktop in the spare room I used as my home office. I had been working from home since Tuesday because Leo wasn’t feeling well. It wasn’t anything serious, just a mild ear infection. Still, the tiny whimpers he made whenever he tugged at his ear were enough to turn me into a nervous wreck.I leaned back in my seat, rubbed my temples. And looked around. The room was scattered with open files, sticky notes, my laptop, and a half-finished cup of chamomile tea in front of me.It was just past two in the afternoon, and I desperately needed a break. My eyes were burning from staring at the screen, and the Excel sheet in front of me had started swimming.I sighed and stood up, stretching my back. “Enough for now,” I muttered to myself. All morning, I’d been switching between work mode and mom mode, and the mental split was starting to catch up with me. I padded across the hall toward Leo’s room, softening my steps automatically, as if t

SHANE The drive home felt like a slow-motion car crash I couldn’t escape. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. Nathaniel’s confession replayed in my head like a broken tape, each word cutting into me again and again. The deception. The manipulation. The cruelty. Everything he’d said about Carrie, about Cathy…and the money.I felt sick.Physically sick.My chest burned with something I couldn’t name, rage, guilt, disbelief, grief. I didn’t know which one was stronger. I didn’t even know which one I wanted to feel. All I knew was that I couldn’t breathe right.Carrie was innocent. The thought stabbed through me and left me gasping. She’d been drugged. Set up. Manipulated into the mess that spun our lives out of control. Nathaniel had orchestrated it like a puppet master, and I…stupid, blind, arrogant, I had believed it. I hadn’t even asked enough questions. I hadn’t looked deeper. I’d been so quick to judge, so quick to doubt her, so quick to th
