Dorian was blocking my way to the bathroom.
All I wanted to do was slip inside the restroom and take a moment. I was feeling overwhelmed by the events of the evening. First Eleanor, with her snide remarks. Then Isabella, with her confusing behaviou
Melody’s POVI strode into the room like I owned the world. Because it sort of felt like I did. The board member’s eyes tracked me as I crossed the room and took my place at the head of the table where Eleanor was standing. The mahogany table gleamed under the board room lights. An untouched plate of assorted donuts sat in the center of the table, and each board member had a cup of coffee placed in front of them.“Melody,” Eleanor said with a coy smile. “You’re right on time.”
Melody’s POVKeal and I left the banquet sometime after midnight. Back at the estate, I kicked off my shoes while I stifled a yawn. I was looking forward to sinking into my bed for a good night’s sleep. In the foyer, the maids gathered our coats. Keal had been very quiet on the car ride home. I figured he was just tired, since it had been a long, eventful night. However, when I went to bid him good night, he grabbed my wrist.“Wait,” he said. His tie was loosened and his shirt sleeves were rolled up at the cuff. He fixed me with a har
Dorian’s POVI’ve never known a mother’s love. My mother never loved me, never held me in her arms as a baby and felt her heart expand in that motherly way. She was distant and cold. Not as cold as my father though. Where my mother lacked a mother’s love for me, my father downright loathed me. And he reminded me of it often. He reminded me with his fists, with the sharp crack of a belt on my backside, with a shove into a wall. Some of my earliest memories involve my father beating me and my mother doing nothing to stop him. Is it any wonder that by the time I was eleven, I wished on every star at night that I would die.My grandfather Eldric was the only person who was ever kind to me. I never really understood why he was so kind to me. Not when I was younger. He treated me differently than all the cousins. He was warmer, softer. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I learned the awful truth behind my grandfather’s kindness, my mother’s distance, and my father’s seething hatred of me
Melody’s POVDorian was blocking my way to the bathroom. All I wanted to do was slip inside the restroom and take a moment. I was feeling overwhelmed by the events of the evening. First Eleanor, with her snide remarks. Then Isabella, with her confusing behaviour. Did she want to be friends or not? One moment it seemed like it, but then the next she was snubbing me, claiming that I wasn’t good enough for Keal. And of course, then there was Adam and Lily.“Move,” I said firmly to Dorian. I was in no mood for his games.
Melody’s POVI watched Lily weave her way through the crowd to the bathroom, with one hand clamped firmly over her mouth. Feeling a profound sense of satisfaction that Lily had been embarrassed, I turned to Isabella.“Shall we go and find some food?” Isabella asked. Nodding, Isabella stepped around Adam and headed towards the food table.“Wait,” Adam said. He grabbed my arm, stopping me. Isabella lifted an eyebrow.“It’s okay,” I told her. “Go on and I’ll catch up with you.”
Melody’s POV“Well?” Lily said. “I’m waiting for my drink.” Her tone was dripping with disdain. She tapped her foot impatiently on the ground, one hand on her hip.Clearly, Lily thought that I was a waitress. Stifling a laugh at her audacity, I shook my head.“What’s so funny?” she asked. “As far as I can see, the joke’s on you.”“And what joke is that?” I asked.“Obviously, yo
