Chapter Three

"If you are calling to tell me about my stuff at work I am sorry I wouldn't be able to come for them. Kindly bring them to me at the close of work today." She said gloomily into the phone immediately she picked up, causing Scarlet to giggle at her foolishness

"What is it? what's funny?" She questioned confused as to why she giggled.

"I am not calling about that ma'am. I called to remind you that Mrs. Rodriguez's appointment with you is at 10:00 am."

"Okay, but why are you telling me this? I have been fired! why are you acting like you don't know? Or did you call to ridicule me?"

"Wait, didn't Mr. Cohen call you?"

"No, he didn't why would he? That man hates me and now that he has fired me there will be no reason for him to call me."

"No, he hasn't fired you. In fact, he is expecting you to be at work today."

"What! how? w-wh- what happened. Why the change of heart?. I lost that deal and he told me that I shouldn't step my foot at the office if I lose it." She jolted to a sitting position on the bed, asking her questions in haste without giving Scarlet the chance to answer.

"Yeah I know. He was furious yesterday but when I found out what exactly happened, I called Lola and asked her to tell Mr. Monett the truth that she was the one that mistakenly ruined the documents. He has therefore decided to give you another chance and has even scheduled another meeting with you. "

"Really?! I never knew."

"Hmm, I find it surprising that Mr. Cohen didn't inform you. He wanted Alex to take over but Mr. Monett insisted that he wants you."

"That man hates me Scarlet. I am not going to lie I hate him too so it's no surprise that he didn't inform me. You do this for me,..... call Mrs. Rodriguez and reschedule our appointment. Tell her I called in sick today but will surely meet with her on Monday. I don't think I am ready to face that jerk yet." She said, grateful that she still has her job and extra grateful that she wouldn't have to see the face of Mr. Cohen for a whole day plus the weekend.

Bentley's POV

Why does it have to be her?. I have other capable workers who can work on their projects but this man still insists it should be that disrespectful bitch. Sometimes I wonder why I had not fired her along ago. She has never carried out my instructions without complaining or objecting to it. I just hate her guts and her too-knowing behavior. If not for her credibility, I wouldn't have thought of keeping her. Then just when I thought I have gotten rid of her, this old man offers us a good contract for his projects and wants her to be in charge of it. She very well knows that I have fired her so how on earth will I tell her that I am giving her job back. That would be so humiliating, it will seem to her like we can not function without her. So I did the wisest thing by not calling her. I will try my possible best to persuade Charles Monett into letting one of my workers if not Alex, Ryan take her place.

My mum's name flashed on my phone's screen indicating that she was the one calling me. I readied myself for her complaints about me not visiting enough and how she would love to spend time with me.

"Hello mum." I answered as calmly as I can.

"Hi son, how are you? I have missed you."

"I am fine and you?"

"I am not fine. You have deserted your poor mother to grief. You don't even let me see you anymore. How have I wronged you?" I chuckled, rolling my eyes at her overreaction. Women and their exaggeration.

"Momma I know you miss me but work has really been hectic and I have to make sure that I don't lose any money.

"Oh so your money is more important than me?. That is harsh and ridiculous you know?. I am sorry that I called you. Bye."

"Come on mum, I didn't mean it that way. Okay, will make time to see you soon."

"Soon? how soon?"

"Very soon my love I promise."

"Hmmm I don't trust you. Why don't you make it this evening? It's Friday and your dad, Adele and I will be having dinner with an old friend of his."

"I will see about that but I can't promise anything."

"Thank you son."

"Whatever. I hope you don't overthink things. Money is not more important than you. My family is everything to me and I am sorry I haven't shown you how much you really mean to me."

"Don't worry Babe. We love you and we will love you no matter what. Even if you disown us, we will still love you. Anyway, how is that pretty girl? Hmmm, what's her name again?...... Oh yes, Mila. How is she?"

"Damn mum, I don't know. If you want to know how she is faring why don't you call her and find out for yourself!"  I raised my voice, higher than I intended just at the mention of her name.

"Relax Imani, no need to bite my head off."

"Then mum, kindly, don't ever ask me anything concerning her!"

"Sorry, I only thought she will be good for you and I........"

"Good for who? me? never! I don't want any disrespectful, arrogant bitch who thinks she can stand up to me. She is not even my type."

"Hmmm son, are you like this because she is able to stand up to you?. You don't like the idea of you not being able to control her."

"You know what, I am not having this conversation with you. I am sorry but I got to get back to work if you really want to see me this evening. I have some work to finish. I can not leave until I am done with it." I cut the call not wanting to hear any more of her 'Mila' talk.

I don't know what has gotten into mum. Ever since I turned twenty-seven which was four years ago, she has been talking about marriages, courting, baby-making of which I have told her time and time again that those shit ain't for me but she doesn't want to understand. Annoyingly, her husband also supports her fully, telling me that I need to have kids to keep the name alive. Being their only son, dad had hope that I will carry on the family name by having my own family. But truthfully I have no interest in that. My sister Adele, got married immediately she turned twenty to her childhood boyfriend but that marriage ended in tears. The lad got their maid pregnant breaking my sister's heart. It broke her that the maid had what she dreamed of having with her husband. She couldn't watch an innocent child live without her father, moreover, she couldn't live with him pretending that nothing happened between them so she filed for a divorce to which I strongly supported. He was never good for her right from the beginning but she never listens. Hmm! young Love. Right now she is seeing an Italian doctor but I hope he keeps her happy because I will not forgive him if he hurt her. I swear he wouldn't want to try it and I have made it known to him. I will run his career into the ground and make life hell for him. But for now, I got into my work pondering so hard about how to convince Mr. Monett to abort his decision of wanting that girl to be in charge of his projects. I know Ms. Blaine is very good with her work and brings a lot of income but her attitude just puts me off.
