Marco Moretti stepped into the gloom. His silk tie was yanked loose, his sleeves rolled up like he was ready to get his hands dirty.

He didn't touch the lights. He dragged a chair across the floor—the screech of wood on wood sounding like a dying animal—and sat backward, arms draped over the backrest.

He pulled a compact video camera from his pocket and set it on the yellowed tablecloth. Click. A tiny red light began to pulse in the dark. A digital heartbeat.

Then came the knife. A tactical com

"Yes," Dominic said."They found me.""You got the audio?""Everything. Valentina and Victor have a deal.""Where’s the drive?""In my pocket.""Get out of there."Lina turned the key. The van shook. "Three minutes. Maybe four. They’ll come up the cliff path.""Take the coast road," Dominic said. "Drive fast.""There’s no cover.""There’s no traffic. Go."Lina hit the gas. The tires spun on the gravel and then they caught. The road was black. Her headlights cut a hole in the night. She drove a mile and the phone rang."Yeah," Lina said."You move fast," a woman said."Who is this?""Jane Sweet. I want the drive, Lina.""It’s just a box.""Victor wants his privacy," Jane said. "Pull over.""No.""Look in the mirror."Lina looked. Two white lights clicked on in the dark. They were closing."I see you," Lina said."Throw the drive out the window. You can keep driving.""Victor doesn't leave witnesses.""It’s your only move," Jane said.Lina dropped the phone. She gripped the wheel with b

The boat cut through the dark water. The lights of Nova City were a thin line behind them.Victor stood on the deck. He held a glass. The ice had melted into the liquor. Jasper came up the stairs. His boots clicked on the steel."They’re drinking the champagne," Jasper said."Let them," Victor said."They want to know about the money.""There is no news.""They know the accounts are locked, Victor. They aren't stupid.""I didn't say they were stupid."Jasper leaned on the railing. "The cash you moved covers the boat and the crew. It doesn't cover Geneva.""I’ll find Leonard. The gap will close.""Dominic has him. You aren't finding anything."Jasper looked at the black sea. "Sara didn't board."Victor turned the glass in his hand. "Check the cabins.""I checked. Her apartment is clean. No laptops. Even the safe was open.""How long?""Six hours.""She took the drive from Berg," Victor said."She has it."Victor set the glass on the railing. The wind made it wobble. "Find her," Victo

  • Black Network   Chapter 60  Third Floor

Lina took the stairs to the third floor and found a small conference room. She went inside and turned the lock. It made a solid click. She sat at the table and made seven calls."Third floor," Lina said. "Bring the machine."They came in one by one. The political editor came first. Then the tech lead. Then two kids from the night shift. Lina knew them. They were clean. They sat around the long table. The air conditioner hummed. No one said anything until the tech lead plugged in the drive. The monitor came to life. There were names and there were bank accounts. The numbers were large. The political editor took off his glasses. He wiped them on his tie. He looked at the numbers and felt the air in the room get heavy."It goes all the way to the mayor," he said."It goes past him," Lina said."The lawyers will stop the presses.""We aren't asking the lawyers," Lina said. "Perla signed. We own the layout."The editor looked at the screen again. "They’ll come for us. They won't use lawyer

The report was finished before the sun came up. Lina sat at the terminal. She wrote it clean. She used short sentences. She used the names and the numbers. She copied the file to the flash drive. It was a small piece of plastic.Dominic stood by the door. He looked at his bandage, then at her."I’ll send a couple of boys with you," Dominic said."No," Lina said."The street is full of them, Lina. Victor isn't sleeping.""Let him stay awake. I don't need help.""Suit yourself," Dominic said. He moved out of her way.Lina walked out. The sun was up but the air was cold. She walked for twenty minutes. She did not look back. If they were there, they were there. She pushed through the glass doors of the Herald. The woman at the desk looked up."Rossi? You’re not working today," she said.Lina kept moving toward the elevators. "I have a deadline.""Wait! I have to call Perla. You can't—""Don't bother," Lina said. The elevator doors shut. She watched the numbers. Ten. Fifteen. Twenty. The

Cody parked the sedan and killed the engine. He stepped out. His shoes got wet. Miller sat behind the desk. His face looked blue from the monitor."Fletcher," Miller said. He did not look up."Miller.""You came back. I thought you’d be drinking.""I forgot my coat.""It's raining," Miller said. He looked up. "Where's my coffee?""The place was closed.""The 24-hour place? You're lying.""Plumbing trouble. They closed.""Great. No coffee. Just sign the log."Cody picked up the pen on the chain. He wrote his name. The pen was heavy."Have a good one," Cody said."Don't count on it."Cody didn't take the elevator. He took the stairs. The concrete was cold. He stopped at the third-floor landing. He knew where the camera didn't see. He stood in the dark for a moment. He pushed the door to the fourth floor. The hall was long and the lights buzzed."Hey!"Cody stopped. Henderson was by the break room. He had a paper cup."Henderson. You're off tonight.""I left my coat.""At three in the

Dominic sat on the concrete, loading the magazine. The spring was stiff. He pressed his thumb down hard until the last brass casing slid into place. He slammed the mag into the grip. It made a solid, metallic click. The radio on the rack hissed with static. A voice came through, thin and scratchy. " Travis is gone. The freighter’s moving. The dock is empty."Dominic didn't pick up the mic. He just sat there."What does it mean?" Lina asked. She was leaning against the wall, watching him."It means Victor’s a dead man," Dominic said. "Travis isn't a martyr. He took his iron and he left.""Victor has his own men.""Men go where the money is. Tomorrow morning, when the payroll doesn't hit, they’ll stop shooting. Right now, they’ve only got what’s in their pockets."Lina pulled the hard drive from her coat and set it on the floor. It hit the cement with a dull thud. "Then let's finish it. I'm going to see Sara Palmer.""It's a trap, Lina. That warehouse is a graveyard.""If I stay here, I

The salt-wind off Pier 7 didn't cool the fire in Lina’s veins. It was a prickle at the base of her neck—the veteran journalist’s sixth sense. She wasn't alone. She stopped at a rusted kiosk, feigning interest in a sun-bleached headline. In the grime of the plexiglass reflection, she saw him. A scra

"Disarm the rats. Now!" Hugo Sidney’s voice boomed through the mist. "Drop the hardware or get buried where you stand!""Berg! Tell your guys to stand down!" The curtains shivered in the night wind, a soft rustle that masked the click of the lock. Marco Moretti stepped in, bringing a cloud of stale rye and tobacco that soured the air. He kicked the deadbolt home. Thud."You’re in the wrong zip code, Marco," Lina said, her drawl scraping against the sil

She tapped her ear. "Soph. It’s done. I'm moving.""Rossi, get out! Now!" Sophia’s voice was a frantic jagged line of panic. "I’ve got movement on the thermal—Hugo’s guys are collapsing the grid.
