Victor took the SIM card out and snapped it. He dropped the pieces and ground them into the concrete with his heel.

The steel door scraped open and a man came in. His jacket was wet.

"Lock the door," Victor said.

The man slid the bolt. It made a sharp sound in the quiet room.

"Talk to me," Victor said.

"The streets are gone," the man said. "The cops hit the casino and the East District warehouses. It is all yellow tape and sirens now."

"Who did they take?"

"They took everyone. Managers, shooter

The Mercenary Captain stepped onto the balcony. His boots hit the stone like a hammer. Valentina didn't turn."Is the house clean?" she asked."The list is finished, Boss.""Categories. Now.""The loyalists? Buried. The sympathizers? Caged." The Captain hesitated. "And the staff? The cleaners? The cooks?""Keep them," Valentina snapped. "I’m taking a throne, not a tomb. I don't like dust in my coffee."She finally turned. "And the floors?""Not a drop of blood left, Boss."Valentina walked past him. She didn't move out of his way—she hit his shoulder hard enough to make him stumble. She leaned into his ear. "One more 'Ma'am' out of you, and I’ll have your tongue. You work for a woman now. Get used to it."She entered the study. Dominic’s study. It reeked of expensive cigars and the sweat of a dead man.The Captain dropped a stack of folders on the heavy oak desk. THUD."The signatures. Tokyo is waiting on the wire.""Let them wait," she said, dismissive. "I’m the one holding the pen.

The steel door shrieked.Valentina stepped inside. She stopped right in front of him. Close enough for him to smell her perfume.Victor lifted his head. Blood coated his teeth in a jagged red grin.“You’re late,” Victor hissed.“I’m exactly when I wanted to be.”Valentina circled the chair. Slowly. She grabbed his chin, her nails sinking into the purple bruising.“Look at you,” she whispered. “I paid for a professional. I got a stray dog.”“I survived, didn’t I?”“Survival?” She shoved his face away with a sneer. She pulled out a silk cloth, wiping her fingertips as if he were toxic. “You’re tied to a chair in a basement, Victor. You’re just a corpse that hasn't realized it stopped mattering.”Victor lunged, the ropes snapping taut against his shredded wrists.“I broke his gate! I did the job!”“You walked into a slaughterhouse and called it a victory.”She leaned down. Her breath was mint and ice.“I gave you the guns. I gave you the funding. And you still managed to choke.”Victor

The nylon cord had long since stopped biting; now, there was only a dull, pulsing heat where Victor’s hands used to be. He sat heavy in the metal chair, his jaw locked behind a mask of dried blood. The steel door groaned. Boots followed.Dominic stepped in, looking infuriatingly pristine. He adjusted the cuff of his white shirt, the starch hiding the bandages on his shoulder. He dragged a wooden stool across the floor and sat close enough for Victor to smell his cologne.Victor spat a thick, copper-tasting glob onto the floor. "You look like a man who’s already spent the inheritance," he rasped."Slept like a baby." Dominic flicked his wrist to check his watch. "You’ve been out for six hours. Just long enough for me to scrub your name off the skyline."Victor leaned back, the metal chair frame thumping against his skull. "Give it to me straight. How bad?""It’s done, Victor. Your lieutenants took the buyout before the coffee got cold. The ones with 'principles' are currently curing i

Lead flew across the yard. The house flashed in the dark. Dominic’s men were in the windows and up on the balcony. They had the high ground and they were using it. It was a hell of a noise.Marco stayed low behind the wrecked gate. He watched the gravel kick up where the bullets hit. His men were going down."Move up!" Victor yelled. He had to scream to be heard. "Break them!"A mercenary tried to run. He took a hit in the chest and folded. He stayed down."They have us pinned," Marco said.Victor popped a mag and slapped a new one in. "We keep going.""There are too many of them," Marco said. He felt the sweat cold on his neck. "Valentina set us up. This isn't the deal.""Keep shooting.""We're dead out here," Marco said. "It's a slaughter.""Hold the line," Victor barked. "Watch the flank."Marco looked at the trees. The woods were dark past the driveway. He stayed on his belly and backed away from the iron. He stayed in the smoke. He didn't look at the men or the trucks. He slipped

Dominic stood by the steel table. He watched Dr. Jake work on Hugo’s arm. The room smelled of alcohol and old blood.Lina walked over. She looked at the red on Hugo’s sleeve, then at Dominic."How did he get hit?" Lina asked. "Hugo is too fast for Victor’s people.""It wasn't Victor," Dominic said.Lina stopped. She held a damp towel in her hand. "Then who?""Marco," Dominic said. "He had the angle and he took it."Lina let the towel hang. She looked at the floor for a moment, then back at Dominic. "Marco flipped? Just like that?""He’s with Victor now," Dominic said. "They made a deal while Hugo was bleeding out in the dirt.""He sold us for the chair," Dominic said.Dominic felt a sudden weight in his chest. The map of the city had changed in a single minute, and the old rules were gone. "Does Hugo know?" Lina asked."He knows," Dominic said. "He saw the face behind the flash."Jake pulled the last stitch tight. "He’s stable. But he’s out of the fight.""We’re all in the fight now,

"Listen up," Jane said. Her voice was flat. The radio exploded with gunfire. A man was breathing hard on the other end."Who’s this?" he yelled. "The left flank is a mess. Where are the coordinates?""Victor is broke," Jane said. "The banks shut him down. The contract is dead."The man went quiet. Behind him, something heavy hit the concrete."Say that again," he said. "The boss said the wire cleared. My guys are bleeding out here.""Check your screens," Jane said. "The money is gone. You’re shooting for free.""Damn it," the man spat. "He swore it was good.""He lied. The lines are cut. I’m packing up.""We’re still holding the cars," the man said."Then die for the rust," Jane said. "I’m moving out."She let go of the button. She grabbed her canvas bag and slung it. She tapped her collar."It’s done," Jane said. "The ground teams know.""They running?" the broker asked."The smart ones. The rest are just emptying mags into the dark. They’ll be dead soon anyway.""Victor is stuck be
