4. The Law of Karma

Beth curled up lazily on her bed. She was supposed to be teaching Raine this afternoon, but she called Mam Runs and said she had the flu and fever. Even though she came to work the morning shift... She isn't really sick, she is just allergic...allergic to go to that house...with the possibility of meeting...that guy.

She doesn't want to see Logan again, no, no! Beth closed her eyes tightly, trying to shake off the terrible image of the car in the rain the previous few days. Aarggghhh, that playboy widower! What does he want? Beth felt humiliated, tarnished, abused!

Suddenly her cell phone rings: it is Logan's house number. There's no way Logan could have called, right?

"Hello?" Beth greeted in a hoarse voice.

"Beth, please get well soon," said Raine's soft voice, making Beth feels guilty.

"Thank you, Raine," Beth answered in her normal voice.

"You're welcome, Beth. Oh yes, next week, take me to my mother's house, okay?" asked Raine, her voice full of hope. A small and cute voice...which turned out to be holding a lot of bitterness in life.

Beth was stunned. Oh, how is this... what should she do?

"Miss Beth?" Ask the girl again. Her voice sounded very cute and funny.

Beth cleared her throat. "Okay, okay, honey, I will definitely take you to meet your mother."

###

Beth deliberately asked for a shift change. She was supposed to come in during the day and only come home at night... She changed shifts with her co-workers, so she could accompany Raine to her mother's place.

She entered the house quietly, trying not to make a sound and not be noticed. She went straight to Raine's room, Beth felt herself like a thief! Yet she came to help the child.

She managed to meet Raine and took her to the place that Raine had been waiting for, her biological mother's house.

But it turns out that Beth made a big mistake by taking Raine to her mother's house. The woman--Raine's mother--opened the door of the house wearing only a thin white shirt and shorts, while behind her, a man wearing only shorts, hugged the woman's waist possessively, making Beth and Raine shocked.

Raine's mother was no less shocked because she found her daughter's visit suddenly.

Raine's mother hastily pushed the tall man away, then said quietly to Raine, "W-why didn't you tell me you wanted to come, honey?" The woman's eyes looked at Beth angrily, over Raine's downcast head.

Instead of being afraid, Beth looked disdainfully at Raine's mother.

"Th-here, this is my friend, honey, his name is Hans," Raine's mother said nervously, pointing to the man standing nearby, hoping her daughter would believe it.

Raine backed away, taking cover behind Beth's body. The little body shook violently as it gripped Beth's body from under her jeans.

"Raine wants to go home," Raine said quietly. It's like she is holding back tears.

"Raine...." called Raine's mother.

"Raine wants to go home!" Raine half screamed between anger, disappointment, and fear.

Beth swallowed hard, then hurriedly took Raine away from Raine's mother and the man who seemed to be her mother's lover.

Beth felt sorry for Raine. She should not have obeyed the girl to meet her mother. But she didn't have the heart to refuse. While in the taxi, the little girl kept crying. To her knowledge from Mam Runs, Raine is a tough girl, because she rarely cried. But this time, Beth felt that this was the pinnacle of Raine's sadness. All she could do was stroke Raine's head and back. Trying to make her calmer and stop crying.

When they got home, Beth owed Logan an explanation, because Raine was still crying and just walked into her room without greeting her father who was waiting on the front porch. Logan with a flat face looked straight at Beth.

Okay, the wrath of a man is waiting for her, Beth thought, looking down, not daring to look at Logan's ghastly face.

"Why.. what happened to her?" asked Logan quietly. He seemed to have a hard time holding back his emotions.

Beth cleared her throat. "I'm thirsty... can I have a drink first?" Dodge Beth, buying time.

Logan asked Mam Runs to make her a cold drink.

In the living room, after taking a few sips of drinks, Beth began to tell her story with a pounding heart, afraid that Logan would throw a tantrum. She told him from the beginning about his idea to teach Raine outside the house, to the incident that caused Raine to cry earlier.

"You're being too annoying for doing that," Logan's voice sounded sinister, making Beth's hairs growl.

"I apologize!" This was the umpteenth time Beth apologized to the man who was sitting tensely in front of her.

There was a heavy sigh. "Actually, it's not entirely your fault."

Beth looked up at Logan. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw the man's black eyes staring at her with piercing eyes.

"I should have . . . I was wary. Jenny, Raine's mother, only now that she wants Raine because her old father said he would give Jenny an inheritance if Jenny gave him a granddaughter."

Beth kept her mouth shut. Very heartless! "So you mean... Mrs. Jenny... never wanted Raine?"

Logan nodded curtly. "Jenny and I are both jerks. But I love Raine, so much. In this world, Raine is the only one I love, only she is precious to me." Logan's eyes seemed to pierce Beth's heart, making it throb in pain.

His words seemed to imply that Beth was meaningless, that the kiss in the car meant nothing at all. Beth knew that and understood very well that Logan did like to play with women. But still, her heart was like being sliced by a knife, hurting her.

"I did the same thing Jenny did, but I never brought my date home, because I didn't want to hurt Raine."

Beth's body was shaking with anger. "You'd better stop your bad habits. Don't hurt women again, don't play with women anymore. Because... the law of karma applies. I don't want your daughter to suffer the consequences of your actions."

Logan's brows furrowed together in the middle. "What do you mean by the law of karma?"

"If you hurt a woman's heart, then there will be a man who will hurt your daughter or your sister. Stop being stupid." Beth rose from the soft sofa she was sitting on. "If you want to satisfy your lust, find a good wife and mother for Raine, not just for temporary personal pleasures. Excuse me." Beth turned and walked out of Logan's house, not intending to come back again.
