One wrong move on the ice could expose the monster hiding inside him.

The crowd noise crashed over Kane Harlan like thunder the moment he stepped onto the frozen surface. Twenty thousand fans screamed for blood and he planned to give them exactly that. He pushed off hard, skates biting into the ice as the game exploded into motion around him. Cold air burned his lungs but he welcomed it. This was his world. This was where he could let the beast loose just enough without anyone knowing.

A rival winger came flying down the wing with the puck. Kane met him like a wall. Their bodies collided with a loud crack that echoed through the arena.

"Get off my ice," Kane growled, shoving the guy away from his team's star player.

The winger shoved back, stick raised. "Who the hell do you think you are, Harlan? Keep your hands to yourself."

Kane leaned in close, voice low and rough. "I am the guy who ends your night if you try that again. Back off."

His teammate skated past quickly. "Nice hit, Kane. Keep them honest out here."

"Always do," Kane called back without taking his eyes off the rival.

Play moved fast. Sticks slapped against the puck. Bodies crashed into boards. Kane stayed in constant motion, positioning himself between danger and his guys. Another forward from the other team tried a dirty elbow on his center.

"Hey," Kane shouted as he closed the gap. "You touch him again and we are going to have real words."

The forward laughed through his mouth guard. "Big man talking. Come on then."

They dropped gloves in a flash. Fists flew quick and hard. Kane landed a solid punch that sent the guy stumbling.

"Stay down," Kane warned as refs pulled them apart.

"You got lucky," the rival spat.

"Luck has nothing to do with it," Kane shot back.

In the penalty box a minute later, one of his own linemates stopped by the glass. "You okay after that scrap?"

"Yeah," Kane answered shortly. "Just another night."

The linemate grinned. "We would be lost without you smashing people for us."

Kane gave a small nod. "That is the job."

He hated talking too much. Every extra word risked giving something away. The wolf inside him stayed quiet for now, satisfied with the violence of the game. But he could feel it watching, waiting.

Second period flew by in a blur of speed and checks. Kane broke up three more rushes, each time exchanging words with frustrated opponents.

"You hit like a truck," one rival said after a big collision.

Kane wiped sweat from his face. "Then stop coming at my guys."

Another teammate yelled from the bench during a stoppage. "Kane, you are a beast out there tonight."

"Someone has to be," Kane replied.

Elias Voss, the captain, skated over during a faceoff setup. "You are carrying us again. That shoulder okay after the last hit?"

"Fine," Kane said. "Focus on scoring. I will handle the rest."

Elias studied him for a beat. "You never say much, do you?"

"Not much to say," Kane muttered as the puck dropped.

The game stayed tight and physical. Kane loved the raw power flowing through him. He protected the net, won board battles, and kept his distance from any real friendships. That was safest.

Late in the third period the score was tied and tensions ran high. Kane saw the play developing and moved to intercept. A rival defenseman came barreling toward him with bad intentions, no puck in sight.

"Watch yourself," Kane warned loudly.

The guy did not listen. The hit came in late and vicious, driving Kane hard into the boards. Pain exploded through his ribs and back. The impact rattled his teeth.

His teammate shouted from nearby. "Ref, that was dirty. Call something."

Kane tried to push himself up but the pain triggered the change. He felt his eyes burn hot.

Elias reached him first, skating in fast and kneeling beside him. "Kane, talk to me. How bad is it?"

"Leave it," Kane growled, keeping his head down.

"No way," Elias said firmly. "That hit was late. You went down like a sack of bricks. Let me see your face."

Kane breathed through clenched teeth. "I said I am good. Get back to the game."

Elias did not move. "Your eyes. Kane, look at me. What is happening with your eyes right now?"

The arena noise started to fade in Kane's ears. He could feel the claws pressing against the inside of his gloves. The wolf pushed hard against his control.

"Back off, Voss," Kane said, voice strained. "You do not want to be here."

Elias leaned closer, voice urgent but calm. "I am not going anywhere. Tell me what is going on. I saw something just now. Your eyes flashed. That is not normal."

Kane finally lifted his head. Their eyes met directly. His own glowed bright gold for a moment, impossible and wild.

Elias stared straight into them, shock clear on his face. "Holy hell. Your eyes are glowing. And your hands. What is that?"

"None of your business," Kane snapped, but the words came out weak.

"It is my business when it happens on my ice," Elias replied. "Talk to me, man. Are you hurt bad? Is this why you heal so fast all the time?"

Kane tried to stand but the shift still fought him. "You need to forget what you saw. Right now."

Elias shook his head. "I cannot forget that. Tell me the truth before the trainer gets here and everyone else sees."

"You would not believe me anyway," Kane said, voice rough.

"Try me," Elias pressed. "I have noticed things about you for months. The way you never get tired. The way bruises disappear. What are you?"

The crowd noise grew distant as Kane held Elias's stare. His claws had started to push out just a little against the gloves. The secret he had guarded for years hung right there between them on the ice.

Elias did not back down. "Whatever this is, I am not walking away. We are teammates. Let me help."

Kane felt the weight of those words. The beast inside howled and the arena lights seemed brighter. Everything he had built to stay hidden was cracking right in front of the one man who paid attention.

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 83: Soft Return

The evening settled over the porch like a soft blanket and the family gathered in the chairs and on the steps as if the day had been saving this exact hour for them."Stories from the day first," Kane said as he eased into his chair. "Then we talk about returning to one another after busy hours. Soft return. That is the heart of it. Elias and I listen more than we talk. Who wants to start?"Elias rested his hands on his knees. "Any short story from today is welcome. The kind that stuck with you. Jake you go first."Jake sat on the top step. "Story from practice. I stayed after to help a new kid pick up cones. He said thanks and looked less nervous. Felt like a soft place to end the afternoon."Kane nodded. "Soft place is the right phrase. That is a return of a kind. You gave him an easy way back to the group."Mia curled up on the bench. "Story from school. I sat with a girl who usually eats alone. We talked about nothing big. Just the cafeteria food and a funny video. She smiled more

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 82: Quiet Measure

The late morning sun stood high and the empty stretch of ground near the house waited like it had been saving this exact job for them."Tape measures out," Kane said as he unrolled the first length. "We mark a simple new garden bed today. Careful measure before we act. Leave room for growth. Grandkids with us the whole time. Elias you take the far corner."Elias walked the edge with a stake in hand. "Far corner is mine. Measure twice. Mark once. That is the quiet rule. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam grab the string and the extra stakes. We talk while we work."Jake took the string. "Why measure so careful Grandpa Kane? We could just dig and fix it later."Kane knelt and set the first mark. "Because fixing later costs more time and more soil. Careful measure now leaves the bed ready for roots to spread right. Same with most things worth doing. You take the measure before you move."Mia held a stake steady. "Leaving room for growth. Does that mean we make the bed bigger than we need?"Elias hamm

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 81: Wide Morning

The early light spilled across the pond and the whole family stepped onto the path like the day had already opened its hands for them."Wide morning," Kane said as he started walking. "Open attention and leaving room for whatever comes. That is the talk while we move. Elias you take the first thought."Elias walked on his other side. "Open attention means you start the day without filling every minute in advance. You leave space so the good things can still reach you. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam stay close. Parents too. Easy updates and plans as we go."Jake kicked a small stone ahead. "What does open attention feel like when you first wake up Grandpa Kane?"Kane answered right away. "It feels like looking out the window before you check any list. You notice the light. You notice how you slept. You let the day show you a little of itself before you start shaping it."Mia walked with her hands in her pockets. "Leaving room for whatever comes. Does that mean you make no plans at all?"Elias s

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 80: Quiet Anchor

The front door banged open and the grandchildren poured in with backpacks and loose papers like the whole afternoon had been waiting for them to arrive."Projects and reading first," Kane said as he cleared the kitchen table. "Calm afternoon. We help where you need it. We talk about being a steady anchor when life feels busy. Elias you take the reading side."Elias pulled two chairs closer. "Reading side is ready. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam pick a spot. Steady anchor means you stay calm and present when things get noisy or heavy. Questions while we work."Jake dumped a history poster on the table. "I need help making the timeline neat. What does a steady anchor actually do Grandpa Kane?"Kane sat beside him. "It holds steady so other people can move without drifting. You do not solve every problem. You stay solid so they can solve their own. Hand me the ruler. We keep the lines straight and the talk going."Jake lined up the first date. "So an anchor does not jump in and take over?"Kane

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 79: Open Trail

The trees opened onto the path like they had been waiting all morning for the first footsteps to claim the way forward."Easy pace," Kane said as he started down the trail. "Open trails in life and leaving them clear for others. That is the talk today. Grandkids stay close. Elias you take the first thought."Elias walked beside him. "Open trails mean you choose the way that stays passable. You do not block it with old clutter or sharp words. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam keep up. Questions while we move."Jake stepped quick to the front. "What makes a trail open Grandpa Kane?"Kane answered as they walked. "Clear ground. Room for two people to pass. Markers that help instead of control. Same in life. You leave space so others can walk without fighting the path."Mia kicked a small stick aside. "How do you choose an open trail when there are lots of options?"Elias looked ahead. "You pick the one that feels honest and kind. The one that does not close doors behind you. Curiosity helps. You ask

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 78: Steady Presence

The home rink lights clicked on and the empty ice waited like it already knew the morning would stay calm and useful."Basic drills only," Kane said as he stepped onto the ice. "Quiet morning. Young players with us. Parents on the boards. We talk about being present without rushing to fix everything. Elias you set the first drill."Elias glided forward. "Easy circles first. No speed. Feel the edges. While we move we talk. Who wants to start the questions?"A young player named Riley pushed off. "What does being present actually look like on the ice?"Kane skated beside him. "It looks like watching the whole play without jumping in too soon. You notice. You wait. You only step in when it truly helps. Try that while we circle."Riley nodded and kept his eyes up. "Feels different. Like I have more time."Elias called to the others. "Jordan Casey Avery same thing. Soft circles. Stay present with your own feet and with the people near you."Jordan spoke while skating. "Hard not to fix ever
