The wolf inside Kane woke up hungry for something it had never wanted before.

The team hit the ice for a hard practice the next morning. Whistles blew and drills started fast. Kane pushed himself through every tough exercise. Then the coach paired him directly with Elias for board battles. They had to fight for every puck in tight spaces. Close contact came whether they wanted it or not.

"Line up," the coach shouted. "Win those battles."

Kane got ready. Elias skated in front of him with a determined look. Their shoulders hit right away as they battled along the boards.

"You are tough today," Elias said, breathing hard while pushing back. "Give me everything you have got."

Kane shoved him off the puck. "You wanted this. Here it is."

They reset and went again. Kane caught Elias's scent strong and clear for the first time. It hit him like a punch. Clean sweat and something warm that made the wolf inside stir with real force. His control shook for a second.

"Keep moving," Kane told himself under his breath.

Elias stole the puck and laughed. "Nice effort. You seem distracted though. Everything okay after last night?"

"I am fine," Kane answered quickly. "Run the drill again."

They crashed together harder. Kane smelled that scent every time they locked up. The wolf pushed forward, wanting more. He had to fight to stay focused on the puck.

"Talk while we work," Elias said during the next battle. "This captain job is heavier than I thought. Everyone expects me to have all the answers. The pressure never lets up."

Kane battled for position. "Yeah, that sounds rough."

Elias kept pushing. "It is. I have to stay strong for the whole team. Never show weakness. How do you stay so apart from everyone? Does it help?"

Kane let a small piece slip. "Alone is safer. I learned that after I lost my people when I was young. No one around means no one gets hurt."

Elias looked surprised but kept fighting for the puck. "You lost your family? I had no idea. What happened back then?"

"Does not matter anymore," Kane said, shutting it down. "Old history."

Elias pressed during the next collision. "It does matter. You carry it in how you play. I notice these things as captain. Leadership means seeing when my players are struggling inside."

Kane won the puck that time and sent it away. "I handle my own stuff. You handle being captain. That is how it works."

"But we could share the load," Elias said. "I see how you protect the rookies even when you pretend not to care. There is a good man under that quiet act."

Kane met his eyes briefly. "You talk a lot, Voss. Most guys just play the game."

Elias grinned through the hard work. "Someone has to get you to open up. One word answers are not enough when we are out here every day together."

They kept drilling. Each battle brought them closer. Kane caught that scent stronger every single time. The wolf stirred harder. It made his hands feel unsteady and his focus slip.

"Again," Elias said, breathing fast. "You are holding back on me. I can feel it in every push."

"I am not holding back," Kane replied sharply.

They slammed together once more. Elias spoke between heavy breaths. "Yes you are. What are you scared of? We are on the same side here."

"Nothing," Kane said, but the word came out rougher than he meant.

Practice finally ended. The coach sent them to the showers. Steam filled the room fast. Kane stood under the hot water trying to calm down. Elias took the stall right next to him.

"That was a rough one," Elias said over the sound of running water. "My whole body hurts from those battles."

"Mine too," Kane answered.

Elias turned to face him more directly. "Going back to what we talked about. This leadership weight is crushing sometimes. Days when I wonder if I am really the right guy for the job."

"You are the right guy," Kane told him honestly. "The team listens to you because you earn it."

Elias stepped a little closer under the spray. "Thanks. That means something coming from you. Now what about your side? When are you going to let someone past that wall? That lonely past you mentioned earlier. You do not have to carry it by yourself forever."

The pull hit Kane hard. Elias's scent mixed with the steam and water. The wolf surged forward fast. His eyes started to burn hot. He felt the change trying to break through.

"Stay over there," Kane warned, voice low and tight.

Elias did not move away. "Why should I? Tell me what is happening with you right now. Your breathing is different. Your eyes look strange again."

Kane pressed one hand hard against the wet tile. "You do not get it. This is not safe. Just back off and finish your shower."

"I want to get it," Elias said, voice steady and close. "That feeling between us. The way your scent or whatever it is pulls at me too. What is really going on here, Kane?"

Kane fought the wolf with everything he had. Claws threatened to push out. His muscles stayed tight and ready to shift. The heated moment grew stronger in the steam. Water ran down both of them. He could feel every inch of the pull toward Elias.

"Talk to me," Elias continued softly. "I saw the way you reacted during drills. That is not normal. Let me in on it."

Kane shook his head. "This could ruin everything. You need to forget you noticed anything."

Elias stayed right there. "I cannot forget. We are connected somehow. I feel it when we are close like this. Tell me the truth before it gets worse."

The pull made Kane's heart race. The wolf wanted to reach out and claim. He held it back but barely. Their eyes locked through the steam.

Suddenly footsteps echoed loud from the hallway outside the showers. A teammate was coming in, whistling a random tune without a care.

Kane froze completely. Elias turned his head toward the sound at the exact same moment. The heated moment hung there, ready to be discovered.

The river ran bright and steady under the morning sun and the first voices of the grandchildren carried across the water like a call that would not be ignored."Come closer to the bank," Kane said as he walked. "We talk about time and small choices today. The river shows both. Elias you start us off."Elias stepped up beside him. "River keeps moving no matter what. Same as time. Small daily choices decide how we move with it. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam gather round. Questions welcome."Jake dropped onto the grass. "What do you mean by small daily choices Grandpa Kane?"Kane sat on a flat rock. "Choices like saying good morning with real attention. Choices like helping without being asked. Choices like listening when someone is quiet. Those add up and shape the years."Mia sat cross-legged. "Does time feel fast or slow to you now?"Elias answered, "Both. Days can feel long when we pay attention. Years feel short when we look back. Smal

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 70: Quiet Continuum

The home rink stood almost silent under the mid-morning lights and the first blade cut the ice like a quiet claim on the day."Empty and open," Kane said as he pushed off slow. "Just us for now. Perfect time to talk about the years still ahead. People who will keep this ice busy long after we slow down."Elias matched the easy pace. "Years ahead look steady from here. Young ones will fill the lanes. Coaches will call drills. Families will watch from the boards. Continuum keeps moving. What do you see most clear?"Kane glided a long curve. "I see the same boards holding new stories. I see kids who never met us still learning the soft stops and the quiet support. Effort and care pass forward. That feels like enough."Elias nodded. "Enough and more. The ice does not belong to any one pair. It belongs to whoever shows up ready to work. We had our time. Others will have theirs. Talk more about the people."Kane looked toward the far end. "The

The porch light flicked on and the whole family spilled out with plates and talk already rising like the evening air itself."Food first then updates," Kane said as he set a big bowl on the low table. "Everyone finds a seat. Elias and I listen tonight. You all talk. We answer when you ask."Elias settled into the wide chair beside him. "Listening feels right for a low-key evening. Short updates from each of you. Plans for the months ahead can grow from there. Jake you start."Jake sat on the top step with a full plate. "Update is school is steady. Made the second team. Coach says my passes improved. Feels good. Question for you Grandpas. How do you stay patient when progress is slow?"Kane answered gentle. "You keep the daily work small. Trust the pile of small days. That is all."Elias added, "And you remember why you started. The why carries you through the slow parts."Mia spoke next between bites. "Update from me. Art class p

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 68: Open Paths

The morning sun cut through the trees and lit the overgrown path like a challenge that would not wait another day."Tools out," Kane said as he handed rakes and clippers around. "We clear these trails today. Family and young players will use them for years. Elias you take the left side. Grandkids with us."Elias took a pair of clippers. "Left side is mine. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam grab gloves. We talk while we work. Leaving space for others to grow. That is the point of every cut we make."Jake pulled on gloves fast. "What does leaving space mean exactly Grandpa Kane?"Kane started on a low branch. "Means we clear enough for safe walking but leave the wild parts alone. People need room to find their own way. Same as in life. You clear a little. You do not control it all."Mia clipped beside him. "Like when you let us try new drills without jumping in right away?"Elias nodded. "Exactly like that. Space to grow means room for mistake

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 67: Steady Glow

The afternoon breeze carried the sound of laughter across the grass before Kane and Elias even reached the path that circled the old pond."Grandkids already ahead of us," Kane said as he walked. "Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam all moving fast. This calm afternoon is going to fill up with questions. Elias you ready for them?"Elias kept pace beside him. "Ready. Growing older and staying close. That is what they always ask about. Family stories too. Look at them waving us forward."Jake turned and called back. "Hurry up. We found the best bench near the water. Come sit and talk."Mia added, "We have questions. Lots of them. About getting older and how you two stay so close."Kane laughed and walked faster. "Questions are good. We answer all of them. Tim save us a spot on that bench."Tim patted the wood. "Saved. Lila Sam sit on the ends. Grandparents in the middle like always."They settled in a loose group. The pond lay quiet in

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 66: Shared Horizon

The home rink lights snapped on early and the first cars rolled into the drive before Kane and Elias had even finished setting out the extra benches."They are here already," Kane said as he pulled on his gloves. "Former teammates and the young ones mixed together. This gathering is going to move fast. Elias you ready to open the door?"Elias grinned and headed for the entrance. "Ready. Steady effort and quiet support. That is the lesson today. Family is already helping. Jake grab those water bottles. Mia help your dad with the extra sticks."Jake hurried over. "Got the waters. How many people are coming Grandpa Kane?"Kane checked the lot. "About twenty. Old friends like Mike and Sarah. New players who asked for a day like this. We keep it simple. Short lessons. Lots of talk. Lila Sam you two greet people at the door."Lila waved as the first group walked in. "Welcome. Skates on the left. Bench space is open."Mike stepped throu
