The rivalry game was about to force Kane's secret into the open whether he wanted it or not.

The arena pulsed with energy from the first puck drop. This matchup always brought out the worst in both teams. Kane felt the high stakes in every shift. Opponents targeted him right from the opening minutes, trying to knock him out of the game early.

A big rival defenseman came at him hard during the first rush. "Harlan, tonight we end you."

Kane met him with a solid check. "Keep talking. See where it gets you."

They exchanged hits along the boards. The crowd roared louder.

His teammate yelled from the ice. "Kane, watch your back. They are gunning for you."

"I see them," Kane shouted back. "Just play your game."

The physical play got nastier fast. Another opponent slashed at Kane after the whistle. "You think you are untouchable?"

Kane shoved him away. "Try harder next time."

Elias skated over quick during a stoppage. "They are coming after you heavy. You holding up?"

"Always do," Kane answered. "Focus on the puck. I will handle these guys."

Elias nodded but looked concerned. "Do not let them take you out. We need you tonight."

The game stayed brutal. Kane blocked shots and protected his stars while opponents kept testing him. Trash talk flew across the ice the whole time.

One rival forward skated close. "Heard you are the big bad enforcer. Prove it."

Kane stared him down. "Stay away from my team and you will not have to find out."

The forward laughed. "Big words. Let us see if you can back them up."

They dropped gloves in the second period. Fists flew fast. Kane landed clean punches while the refs tried to break it up.

"Stay down," Kane warned as they separated.

"You hit like a monster," the rival said, breathing hard.

Kane wiped blood from his lip. "Remember that."

Elias found him again between shifts. "That fight looked bad. Your hand okay?"

"It is fine," Kane said. "Stop worrying about me."

"I worry because you take too much," Elias replied. "Let someone else handle a few hits for once."

Kane shook his head. "That is not how I play."

The third period brought the worst of it. The score was close and tensions boiled over. Multiple opponents went after Kane at once. A vicious fight broke out near the boards. Sticks dropped and gloves flew everywhere.

"Come on, Harlan," one rival taunted. "Show us what you really are."

Kane fought hard in the middle of the chaos. "You want to find out?"

Fists connected. Bodies slammed together. In the heat of the brawl Kane felt the shift hit him strong. His eyes glowed bright gold for a split second. Fangs pressed against his lips. The partial change showed right in front of Elias who was trying to pull players apart.

Most of the crowd missed the details in all the movement. But Elias saw everything clearly.

The refs finally broke up the fight. Kane skated back to the bench breathing hard. He forced the wolf down fast.

After the game the locker room noise faded behind them. Elias grabbed Kane by the arm and dragged him into a quiet hallway away from everyone.

"We talk now," Elias said firmly. "No more avoiding this."

Kane pulled his arm free. "Let it go, Voss."

Elias blocked the hallway. "I cannot let it go. I saw fangs. Your eyes glowed gold right in front of me during that fight. What the hell are you?"

Kane looked down the empty hall. "You saw wrong. It was the lights or the blood or something."

"Do not lie to me," Elias demanded. "I know what I saw. Twice now. On the ice tonight and before. Tell me the truth."

Kane stayed silent for a moment. The warning sat heavy in his chest.

Elias stepped closer. "I have watched you heal too fast. Take hits that should break bones. Now this. Are you even human?"

Kane finally met his eyes. "Part of me is not."

Elias waited. "Keep going. Explain it."

Kane spoke low. "I am a werewolf. That is the short version. The rest is complicated and dangerous."

Elias stared at him. "A werewolf. Like actual claws and full moon stuff?"

"Yeah," Kane admitted. "Something like that."

Elias ran a hand through his hair. "How long have you been like this? Does anyone else on the team know?"

"No one knows," Kane said. "And it has to stay that way."

Elias paced a few steps. "This explains so much. The strength. The way you never seem to get tired. Why did you never tell anyone?"

"Because it is not safe," Kane answered. "There are rules. Ancient ones. Humans cannot know."

Elias stopped pacing. "What happens if they do know?"

Kane looked straight at him. "Bad things. For both of us."

Elias crossed his arms. "I am not scared. I saw what I saw. I am in this now whether you like it or not."

Kane shook his head. "You do not understand. Knowing this could get you killed. The people who enforce these rules do not play around."

"Then explain the rules to me," Elias said. "I need to know what we are dealing with."

Kane leaned against the wall. "It is not that simple. My kind stays hidden for a reason. One slip and everything ends."

Elias stood firm. "I saw your fangs tonight. I saw your eyes. I am not pretending it did not happen. Talk to me about what this means for you."

Kane sighed. "It means I fight every day to stay in control. The wolf wants out. Especially around certain people."

"Like me?" Elias asked quietly.

Kane did not answer that part. "Knowing puts a target on you. Walk away while you still can."

Elias shook his head. "Too late for that. I am not walking away. Tell me more. How do you live with this secret every single day?"

Kane rubbed his face. "By staying alone. By using the game to burn off the energy. But now you know part of it."

"And I am still here," Elias said. "We will figure this out together."

Kane warned him one last time. "Knowing this truth could get you killed. Think hard about that before you ask for more."

The hallway felt smaller as the weight of the admission settled between them. Elias showed no sign of backing down.

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 83: Soft Return

The evening settled over the porch like a soft blanket and the family gathered in the chairs and on the steps as if the day had been saving this exact hour for them."Stories from the day first," Kane said as he eased into his chair. "Then we talk about returning to one another after busy hours. Soft return. That is the heart of it. Elias and I listen more than we talk. Who wants to start?"Elias rested his hands on his knees. "Any short story from today is welcome. The kind that stuck with you. Jake you go first."Jake sat on the top step. "Story from practice. I stayed after to help a new kid pick up cones. He said thanks and looked less nervous. Felt like a soft place to end the afternoon."Kane nodded. "Soft place is the right phrase. That is a return of a kind. You gave him an easy way back to the group."Mia curled up on the bench. "Story from school. I sat with a girl who usually eats alone. We talked about nothing big. Just the cafeteria food and a funny video. She smiled more

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 82: Quiet Measure

The late morning sun stood high and the empty stretch of ground near the house waited like it had been saving this exact job for them."Tape measures out," Kane said as he unrolled the first length. "We mark a simple new garden bed today. Careful measure before we act. Leave room for growth. Grandkids with us the whole time. Elias you take the far corner."Elias walked the edge with a stake in hand. "Far corner is mine. Measure twice. Mark once. That is the quiet rule. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam grab the string and the extra stakes. We talk while we work."Jake took the string. "Why measure so careful Grandpa Kane? We could just dig and fix it later."Kane knelt and set the first mark. "Because fixing later costs more time and more soil. Careful measure now leaves the bed ready for roots to spread right. Same with most things worth doing. You take the measure before you move."Mia held a stake steady. "Leaving room for growth. Does that mean we make the bed bigger than we need?"Elias hamm

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 81: Wide Morning

The early light spilled across the pond and the whole family stepped onto the path like the day had already opened its hands for them."Wide morning," Kane said as he started walking. "Open attention and leaving room for whatever comes. That is the talk while we move. Elias you take the first thought."Elias walked on his other side. "Open attention means you start the day without filling every minute in advance. You leave space so the good things can still reach you. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam stay close. Parents too. Easy updates and plans as we go."Jake kicked a small stone ahead. "What does open attention feel like when you first wake up Grandpa Kane?"Kane answered right away. "It feels like looking out the window before you check any list. You notice the light. You notice how you slept. You let the day show you a little of itself before you start shaping it."Mia walked with her hands in her pockets. "Leaving room for whatever comes. Does that mean you make no plans at all?"Elias s

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 80: Quiet Anchor

The front door banged open and the grandchildren poured in with backpacks and loose papers like the whole afternoon had been waiting for them to arrive."Projects and reading first," Kane said as he cleared the kitchen table. "Calm afternoon. We help where you need it. We talk about being a steady anchor when life feels busy. Elias you take the reading side."Elias pulled two chairs closer. "Reading side is ready. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam pick a spot. Steady anchor means you stay calm and present when things get noisy or heavy. Questions while we work."Jake dumped a history poster on the table. "I need help making the timeline neat. What does a steady anchor actually do Grandpa Kane?"Kane sat beside him. "It holds steady so other people can move without drifting. You do not solve every problem. You stay solid so they can solve their own. Hand me the ruler. We keep the lines straight and the talk going."Jake lined up the first date. "So an anchor does not jump in and take over?"Kane

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 79: Open Trail

The trees opened onto the path like they had been waiting all morning for the first footsteps to claim the way forward."Easy pace," Kane said as he started down the trail. "Open trails in life and leaving them clear for others. That is the talk today. Grandkids stay close. Elias you take the first thought."Elias walked beside him. "Open trails mean you choose the way that stays passable. You do not block it with old clutter or sharp words. Jake Mia Tim Lila Sam keep up. Questions while we move."Jake stepped quick to the front. "What makes a trail open Grandpa Kane?"Kane answered as they walked. "Clear ground. Room for two people to pass. Markers that help instead of control. Same in life. You leave space so others can walk without fighting the path."Mia kicked a small stick aside. "How do you choose an open trail when there are lots of options?"Elias looked ahead. "You pick the one that feels honest and kind. The one that does not close doors behind you. Curiosity helps. You ask

  • Blood beneath the ice    Chapter 78: Steady Presence

The home rink lights clicked on and the empty ice waited like it already knew the morning would stay calm and useful."Basic drills only," Kane said as he stepped onto the ice. "Quiet morning. Young players with us. Parents on the boards. We talk about being present without rushing to fix everything. Elias you set the first drill."Elias glided forward. "Easy circles first. No speed. Feel the edges. While we move we talk. Who wants to start the questions?"A young player named Riley pushed off. "What does being present actually look like on the ice?"Kane skated beside him. "It looks like watching the whole play without jumping in too soon. You notice. You wait. You only step in when it truly helps. Try that while we circle."Riley nodded and kept his eyes up. "Feels different. Like I have more time."Elias called to the others. "Jordan Casey Avery same thing. Soft circles. Stay present with your own feet and with the people near you."Jordan spoke while skating. "Hard not to fix ever
