Always Getting Into Trouble

The receptionist kept staring, it took him a while to figure out that he was still staring. His eyes widened and he cleared his throat awkwardly.

“W…what can I help you with, Miss?” He said, his voice sounded gravely, like he wasn’t used to speaking or something like that.

Rain was drenched from head to toe, she was beginning to feel the cold despite how much warmer the reception was. It was beginning to affect her mood as well but she tried her best to make sure it didn’t, she did not want to be rude to the young receptionist she had only just met. He looked to be at least twenty years old or maybe younger so it was safe to say that she was slightly older than him.

“House number 108,” the polite smile still on her lips, “I need the directions to 108 please”

The young man looked momentarily dazed and his gaze was directed at her lips rather than her eyes, she was used to such stares. Her mother had always told her that she had unique features, the type that would captivate any man or woman that saw her, her ml other taught her how to use her rare beauty to her advantage as well but Rain had made sure that all of those teachings went down the drain.

She refused to let just one thing about her define her entire life.

“I…you are?” he seemed to finally come down to earth as his lips were finally moving again.

“My name is Rain,” just then there was the sound of thunder to show that the rain was getting heavier, the irony of the whole situation made Rain chuckle.

“Rain Coleman, sister of Nicholas Coleman, he told me that he’ll inform the receptionist of my arrival?”

It seemed to click at that moment, the young man gasped and then nodded in recognition.

“Ah…yes, Miss Rain, I have been expecting you!” his gaze drifted down to her lips again then back up to her eyes.

“I…I will show you where—” he choked up midsentence and tried to clear his throat again.

Poor thing, he looked like a nervous wreck.

Rain couldn’t help but wonder, did she really look that scary or was it just his natural reaction to everyone?

“—I mean third floor,” he then completed sheepishly, “I can’t leave the counter but once you’re at the third floor you’ll know the direction to take…it’s the eighth room on your right”

“Thank you,” Rain said as she hurried to the elevator not wanting to be in the receptionist’s presence anymore. His stares made her feel extremely uncomfortable honestly and she didn’t want to snap at him…that would be bad for her brother who’s life goal is to please everybody in the world.

She groaned at the thought of it.

Once she pressed the button, the elevator gave a slight jerk that made her panic before it started moving like it was the normal routine.

The elevator at least, looked modern and really clean.

The door soon opened with a ding and she dragged her luggage behind her as she stared walking down the long hallway.

It fascinated her just how much space was in one hallway and how far the doors were from each other, the place looked more fancy on the inside, she has to admit.

She counted eight doors down as she walked and as told, the eight door was the one with the number 108 on it. She sighed in relief and looked down at the beige foot mat in front of the door. The color made her dizzy, she knew her brother had weird tastes years ago but she honestly thought he would grow out of it.

Right next to the foot mat was a vase with what looked like cactus or aloe Vera plant growing inside of it. Rain stared oddly at the strange plant before squatting down and moving the plant to the side a bit and as her brother has said over the phone, there was a key beneath the vase.

Once she was inside the house, she didn’t bother to look around.

She was too tired to observe the interior of her brother’s apartment, she already had a vague idea of what it would look like judging by the foot mat that was outside the door which she didn’t really see the use of.

She found her way to the master bedroom and located the bathroom with not much difficulty. She adjusted the temperature of the water and then stepped under the show and sighed as she felt the hot water hit her skin.

She finally felt like her self again.

She wrapped the only available towel around her body and then rummaged through her brother’s closet in search of an oversized shirt. She felt too lazy to attend to the luggage she abandoned in the living room.

Going through his bright colored shirts were like torture to her eyes, her finger finally settled on the grey shirt with a lemon green monster printed on the front.

Of course it wouldn’t be completely grey.

She sighed and put the shirt on, right under the shirt was a black object that she almost couldn’t identify.

Rain ran her fingers through her thick brown curls, frustrated.

How wrong she was to think her brother would change after all these years. She felt so disappointed at herself for assuming that him being in Italy meant he had stopped doing all those shady jobs he did that put both his life and the lives of his family in danger.

She reached for the gun and weighed it in her hand. She almost couldn’t remember the last time she had held a gun because of how long again it was but then again...It was when she had to point it at that man…

When she finally decided she had had enough.

Just as she decided to take a closer look at the gun, she heard the front door bang open.

With a startle, she held the gun in her grip a bit tighter, unconsciously checked if the gun was loaded. It wasn’t but she still held it in front of her cautiously as she made her way to the living room to find the source of the noise.

“Where’d you hide it you piece of—”

“-I’ve told you that you’re barking up the wrong tree!” Hearing her brother’s agitated voice reply to the angry one made her blood run cold.

He had gotten himself in trouble again.
