I was standing by the door, my hand already on the knob, ready to leave, when I heard something that made my heart stop.

It was a loud thud, followed by voices shouting from the hallway.

At first, I thought I was imagining things. But then I heard it clearly this time—someone yelling, “Freeze! Hands up!”

My stomach dropped. That wasn’t just anyone’s voice. It was a policeman.

I turned sharply, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. My steps felt slow at first, but as the noise grew louder, I ran towards the sound. When I reached the corner of the hallway, I froze.

Two policemen were dragging someone through the open window.

And that person was Karen.

For a second, I couldn’t breathe. My mind refused to believe what my eyes were seeing. His hands were cuffed behind his back, his shirt wrinkled, and his face pale under the bright light. One of the officers had a tight grip on his arm, while the other pushed him forward.
