Chapter 1

My hand trembled violently, and the bone-suturing needle dropped to the floor with a clink.

This corpse had long been stripped of its human skin. I had pieced the face together with my own hands, following the shape of the skull beneath.

But those eyes and brows… They looked like they belonged to my younger brother, Alvin Murphy.

Seeing me lose my composure, the owl circling overhead landed on my shoulder. With a low screech, it summoned the person hidden in the shadows.

The shadow guard sent by Milton Greer stepped forward. "Dr. Bonewright, the corpse is thoroughly decayed. There's no need to pay attention to something so filthy."

My heart clenched.

Indeed, this corpse had been broken beyond recognition. The four limbs had been hacked into several pieces, and every bone was covered in blade marks.

The skull had bone-piercing nails driven through every opening, and what little flesh remained showed clear signs that the victim's skin had been flayed off while they were still alive.

I had been suturing bones together at the frontier for many years, and I had seen countless mountains of corpses and seas of blood. Yet, I had never seen a body in such a horrific state before.

As I looked at that familiar face, my eyes burned hot. A tear fell and splashed on the bones.

This person… Just how much suffering had he endured while he was still alive?

I steadied myself and chuckled self-deprecatingly.

Everyone knew that Susan Roth loved Alvin more than her own life. She would rather die than give up the child she was carrying for him, and she even would've gladly handed over the throne for his sake.

He was at the height of his power in the palace right now. How could he possibly be the broken remains before me?

There were plenty of people who resembled one another in this world. I was probably just overthinking things.

I picked up the needle again and bent over to continue suturing the bones. This person had suffered in life, so he should at least be allowed some dignity in death.

However, when I slowly pieced together the shattered bones of the right palm, my whole body suddenly went rigid.

That palm bone had six fingers… just like Alvin.

Alvin had been born with six fingers. After he had gotten poisoned as a child, that extra pinky festered and turned black. If it wasn't removed, the poison would spread and kill him.

I was the one who had held the blade and cut off that finger for him.

The blade work had been precise, leaving only the faintest mark after it healed. It was barely noticeable unless looked at closely.

Although his finger was severed, the extra finger bone would always remain.

"There's no way…" I murmured, my breathing growing rapid. "There's absolutely no way!"

Alvin was in the palace right now, serving as the Prince Regent who held power over the entire court and country. I had just seen him with my own eyes.

I forced myself to look at that hand again.

Knife wounds, burns, and bite marks from beasts had already ruined the bones beyond recognition. There was no way to make out this person's original appearance.

I took a deep breath, steadied myself, and silently berated myself. What the hell was I thinking?

Alvin was in the capital, thousands of miles away from here, basking in everyone's reverence.

He was the all-powerful Prince Regent. How could he be here, reduced to a pile of shattered bones?

By now, Harold had completely abandoned any trace of dignity. Both his eyes were gouged out, but he faced those two bloodied holes in my direction, and crawled toward me with pinpoint accuracy."Jason… Dr. Bonewright… I beg you, spare me…"It was her! Susan forced me to do all of it! She said that once everything was over, she'd make me the Prince Regent. That's why… I was blinded by greed. "I did nothing! She thought of every single torture method that was used on Alvin! She hated that he refused to give all of his blood at once and insisted on drawing it daily…"As he spoke, he suddenly began to laugh madly. "She drew the blade herself every single day, you know? She said watching a handsome man grimace in pain made the wine taste better…"I kicked him away. He flew several yards before crashing into a pillar, and a crack echoed as his bones broke. Even then, he kept screaming, "It was her! It was all her!"I had no interest in watching them turn on each other.Milton kneeled

I turned toward Susan and sneered. "Susan, did you think your congenital poison was cured?"She froze, stunned.I continued, "Press the spot three inches below your ribs on the left. Do you still think you're cured?"Susan's expression changed. Without thinking, she raised her hand and pressed the spot I had described. It was only a quick press, but an agonized scream tore from her throat. Then, a mouthful of black blood burst out and splattered on the ground.Within moments, bruises covered her entire body, as if she had been consumed by lethal poison. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she looked down at her hands. "H-How can this be… I took the cure. I was clearly…"Harold shrieked, "You demon! What sorcery have you cast on Her Majesty? Undo it at once!"If not, I'll have you ripped to shreds! Do you hear me? I'll grind you into a mince and feed you to the dogs!"I chuckled coldly. "You're soon to be a dead man, yet you still dare bark at me?"As my words fell, the Soulbindi

Susan's expression darkened. "All you have are just these few men, yet you dare to make a move against me?"I glared at her fiercely. A sinister smile appeared on my face as I said through gritted teeth, "In terms of armies, I may not match you. But when it comes to taking lives, Ghost Valley never leaves anyone alive to see the morning."I raised my eyes, sweeping a ruthless gaze over her and Harold."Milton, take them alive. Keep them breathing. I'll take every last bit of pain they inflicted on Alvin and pay it back a thousandfold, one by one."Before I had even finished speaking, Milton had already struck. Black mist churned violently as he struck out with a single palm. Three elite royal guards beside Susan were sent flying backward, crashing into the pillars. The sound of their bones breaking was clear and crisp.Susan's expression twisted dramatically, and she pulled Harold back."Protect your monarchs!" she barked. "I command the royal guards to attack!"Countless roya

Just as the Soulbinding Needle reached Susan, she flicked her hand, and a palm-sized shield materialized in midair. The Soulbinding Needle was violently repelled. My pupils contracted sharply. The Soulbinding Needle was an extremely thin bone-suturing needle. Once it entered the brain, it could extract a person's soul.It was as fine as a wisp of thread and infused with nether energy. It could pierce through anything without fail—walls, armor, and even stone walls—let alone shields. But now, it had been blocked. My owl shrieked and dove straight down, aiming for Harold's head. Just as it was about to peck his skull open, a golden net fell from the sky and ensnared it. It struggled wildly inside the net, but it only tangled around tighter the more it did so.My owl had once pecked through the skulls of 17 enemy generals at the frontier. A mere net shouldn't have been able to trap it.Yet, it was now trapped like a sparrow in a person's grasp. My expression turned serious. It was

The moment my words fell, I flicked my fingers lightly, and a Soulbinding Needle shot straight toward Susan's face. The man wearing Alvin's face threw himself at my feet, using his body to shield her. Tears streamed down his face as he choked out, "Jace, what nonsense are you saying? I'm Alvin, your most beloved younger brother!"He was certain that I wouldn't be able to strike him down while looking at this familiar face.Unfortunately, he was wrong. I felt not even the slightest bit of mercy for him.I gripped his hand and twisted down hard, my fingers locking over his bones. With a crack, the bones of his palm shattered.I sneered. "You say you're my brother? Then where is the sixth palm bone you were born with?"The man screamed in agony. His eyes were filled with terror, yet he still cried out, "Jace! Have you gone mad? I am Alvin Murphy!"Before he even finished speaking, a flash of cold steel slipped from his sleeve, and a dagger stabbed straight toward my heart. My owl

Hearing that I had returned, Alvin's face lit up with surprise. He rushed over and grabbed my arm."Jace! Why did you suddenly come back? Are you staying this time?"I felt the warmth of his hand through the fabric of my sleeve. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the faint scar across his palm.It was a scar that I had made myself. The bladework was unique, and no one else in the world could have made a cut like that. The knot in my chest finally loosened. It seemed that I really had been overthinking it.I forced a smile and ruffled his hair the way I used to when he was younger. "I had made some Life-Saving Pills for you. I realized halfway through that I'd forgotten to give them with you, so I rushed back here."Susan walked over and wrapped her arm around his waist, teasing, "It's just a few pills. You could've just had someone deliver them. Instead, you came all this way yourself. I think you were just worried and came back to check on him."Alvin pulled her into his
