Chapter 4

Auteur: Jade Grove
Hearing that I had returned, Alvin's face lit up with surprise. He rushed over and grabbed my arm.

"Jace! Why did you suddenly come back? Are you staying this time?"

I felt the warmth of his hand through the fabric of my sleeve. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see the faint scar across his palm.

It was a scar that I had made myself. The bladework was unique, and no one else in the world could have made a cut like that.

The knot in my chest finally loosened. It seemed that I really had been overthinking it.

I forced a smile and ruffled his hair the way I used to when he was younger. "I had made some Life-Saving Pills for you. I realized halfway through that I'd forgotten to give them with you, so I rushed back here."

Susan walked over and wrapped her arm around his waist, teasing, "It's just a few pills. You could've just had someone deliver them. Instead, you came all this way yourself. I think you were just worried and came back to check on him."

Alvin pulled her into his arms and smiled contentedly.

Still smiling, I held out the pills.

But instead of taking them, Alvin merely raised his chin slightly and—with an air of authority I'd never heard from him before—instructed the chamberlain beside him, "Take them, and put them in the innermost drawer. They're from Jace, so they must be kept somewhere safe."

I had never seen him act so callously arrogant. Even his manner of tilting his chin was unfamiliar to me.

A chill ran through me, and I narrowed my eyes. However, the smile on my face only deepened as I reached out and grabbed his hand.

Alvin was obviously stunned for a moment, but he quickly regained his senses and squeezed my hand back.

Over the years, I had become more reserved. I rarely showed him this much affection, so his reaction wasn't out of the ordinary.

In the next second, my smile turned cold, and I suddenly asked, "Alvin, what medicine is this?"

Panic flashed through his eyes, but only for a moment. Then he smiled again and gently shook my hand.

"Jace, why ask me about the medicine you gave me? Of course, it has to be your best Life-Saving Pills."

Those words crushed the last shred of hope I had left. There was no way my younger brother would have forgotten.

Those weren't Life-Saving Pills at all. It was a lethal poison I personally made, one that would kill the instant it interacted with blood.

I clamped down on "Alvin's" hand, refusing to let him pull away. My fingertips pressed down hard as I felt along his palm bones one by one.

One, two, three, four, five… Then nothing. No matter how much I felt around, I couldn't find that sixth palm bone.

At that moment, I felt my heart plunge into an icy abyss, and grief washed over me.

I slowly raised my head and fixed my gaze on Susan. There was a smile on my face, but my voice carried a hint of viciousness beneath it.

"Susan… you've cared for my brother remarkably well all these years!"

Susan's expression shifted slightly. "How dare you!"

Her face darkened as the full weight of her royal authority bore down. "You dare speak to me like this?"

The man before me turned pale. He wrenched his hand free from my grip and rushed over to her side, trying to calm her.

"Your Majesty, please don't get mad! Jace has spent too long at the borders and doesn't understand court etiquette. Please don't hold it against him!"

He turned back to me and said urgently, "Jace! Hurry, kneel, and apologize to Her Majesty! Don't ever do this again!"

My younger brother would never say that I didn't understand court etiquette. And he would never tell me to kneel before anyone.

A cold, sinister smile slowly crept onto my lips. "Who are you calling 'Jace'?"

I raised my hand, and my owl screeched through the sky before landing on my shoulder.

A sharp whistle rang out, and numerous figures seemed to stir in the darkness.

My gaze, completely devoid of warmth, fell upon Susan.

"Susan Roth, you know perfectly well what Ghost Valley holds in its hand. I will ask one last time—where is my brother?"

Susan let out a furious laugh. "Are you insane? Your brother is right in front of you. Who else are you even looking for?"

I slowly lifted my gaze, my eyes filled with cold and ruthless intent.

"I've spent my entire life only suturing bones, not saving the living. Susan, don't forget that it was Alvin who saved your life.

"If he's dead… I'll make you understand what it feels like to become a ghost on the road to the underworld."

By now, Harold had completely abandoned any trace of dignity. Both his eyes were gouged out, but he faced those two bloodied holes in my direction, and crawled toward me with pinpoint accuracy."Jason… Dr. Bonewright… I beg you, spare me…"It was her! Susan forced me to do all of it! She said that once everything was over, she'd make me the Prince Regent. That's why… I was blinded by greed. "I did nothing! She thought of every single torture method that was used on Alvin! She hated that he refused to give all of his blood at once and insisted on drawing it daily…"As he spoke, he suddenly began to laugh madly. "She drew the blade herself every single day, you know? She said watching a handsome man grimace in pain made the wine taste better…"I kicked him away. He flew several yards before crashing into a pillar, and a crack echoed as his bones broke. Even then, he kept screaming, "It was her! It was all her!"I had no interest in watching them turn on each other.Milton kneeled

I turned toward Susan and sneered. "Susan, did you think your congenital poison was cured?"She froze, stunned.I continued, "Press the spot three inches below your ribs on the left. Do you still think you're cured?"Susan's expression changed. Without thinking, she raised her hand and pressed the spot I had described. It was only a quick press, but an agonized scream tore from her throat. Then, a mouthful of black blood burst out and splattered on the ground.Within moments, bruises covered her entire body, as if she had been consumed by lethal poison. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she looked down at her hands. "H-How can this be… I took the cure. I was clearly…"Harold shrieked, "You demon! What sorcery have you cast on Her Majesty? Undo it at once!"If not, I'll have you ripped to shreds! Do you hear me? I'll grind you into a mince and feed you to the dogs!"I chuckled coldly. "You're soon to be a dead man, yet you still dare bark at me?"As my words fell, the Soulbindi

Susan's expression darkened. "All you have are just these few men, yet you dare to make a move against me?"I glared at her fiercely. A sinister smile appeared on my face as I said through gritted teeth, "In terms of armies, I may not match you. But when it comes to taking lives, Ghost Valley never leaves anyone alive to see the morning."I raised my eyes, sweeping a ruthless gaze over her and Harold."Milton, take them alive. Keep them breathing. I'll take every last bit of pain they inflicted on Alvin and pay it back a thousandfold, one by one."Before I had even finished speaking, Milton had already struck. Black mist churned violently as he struck out with a single palm. Three elite royal guards beside Susan were sent flying backward, crashing into the pillars. The sound of their bones breaking was clear and crisp.Susan's expression twisted dramatically, and she pulled Harold back."Protect your monarchs!" she barked. "I command the royal guards to attack!"Countless roya

Just as the Soulbinding Needle reached Susan, she flicked her hand, and a palm-sized shield materialized in midair. The Soulbinding Needle was violently repelled. My pupils contracted sharply. The Soulbinding Needle was an extremely thin bone-suturing needle. Once it entered the brain, it could extract a person's soul.It was as fine as a wisp of thread and infused with nether energy. It could pierce through anything without fail—walls, armor, and even stone walls—let alone shields. But now, it had been blocked. My owl shrieked and dove straight down, aiming for Harold's head. Just as it was about to peck his skull open, a golden net fell from the sky and ensnared it. It struggled wildly inside the net, but it only tangled around tighter the more it did so.My owl had once pecked through the skulls of 17 enemy generals at the frontier. A mere net shouldn't have been able to trap it.Yet, it was now trapped like a sparrow in a person's grasp. My expression turned serious. It was

The moment my words fell, I flicked my fingers lightly, and a Soulbinding Needle shot straight toward Susan's face. The man wearing Alvin's face threw himself at my feet, using his body to shield her. Tears streamed down his face as he choked out, "Jace, what nonsense are you saying? I'm Alvin, your most beloved younger brother!"He was certain that I wouldn't be able to strike him down while looking at this familiar face.Unfortunately, he was wrong. I felt not even the slightest bit of mercy for him.I gripped his hand and twisted down hard, my fingers locking over his bones. With a crack, the bones of his palm shattered.I sneered. "You say you're my brother? Then where is the sixth palm bone you were born with?"The man screamed in agony. His eyes were filled with terror, yet he still cried out, "Jace! Have you gone mad? I am Alvin Murphy!"Before he even finished speaking, a flash of cold steel slipped from his sleeve, and a dagger stabbed straight toward my heart. My owl
