The Sanctuary’s key

The apartment trembled as another explosion shook the building.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Aurora instinctively clutched the glowing Moonstone hanging around her neck.

Outside, screams echoed through the streets of Ashwood.

“They’re here,” Elyra whispered.

Lucien stepped toward the shattered window, his crimson eyes scanning the darkness below.

“They’ve surrounded the building.”

Kael inhaled sharply, his wolf senses taking over.

“Not just Shadow Hunters…”

His jaw tightened.

“There are vampires.”

Lucien turned slowly.

“My clan would never attack the Moon’s Daughter.”

“They’re not your clan,” Kael growled. “Look again.”

Lucien’s expression darkened.

Standing on the rooftops across the street were figures dressed in black armor. Their eyes glowed an unnatural crimson.

“They’re Bloodborn,” Lucien said quietly.

Elyra’s face lost all color.

“They were banished centuries ago.”

Lucien nodded.

“They serve no kingdom.”

“They serve only Morgana.”

A deafening crash echoed from the hallway.

The apartment door exploded inward.

Three Bloodborn vampires rushed inside with terrifying speed.

One lunged straight for Aurora.

Lucien intercepted him instantly.

Steel flashed.

The assassin drew a silver blade engraved with ancient runes.

Lucien caught the strike with his bare hand.

Smoke hissed from his palm as the enchanted silver burned his skin.

Kael shifted halfway, claws bursting from his fingertips.

With a roar, he tackled another assassin through the dining table.

Wood splintered across the room.

Aurora backed toward the wall, her heart hammering.

Selene grabbed her wrist.

“We have to go!”

“No!” Aurora cried. “I’m not leaving them!”

“You don’t have a choice!”

Elyra hurried to the old bookshelf in the corner.

She pressed a tiny crescent-shaped carving hidden behind a row of books.

With a deep rumble, the floor split open.

Stone stairs descended into darkness.

Aurora stared.

“There’s a tunnel beneath my apartment?”

“It has always been here,” Elyra said.

“Your mother built this home above an ancient escape route.”

Lucien blocked another sword strike.

“Take Aurora!”

Kael slammed an assassin into the wall.

“We’ll hold them off!”

Aurora hesitated.

“I can’t leave you!”

Lucien looked at her for the first time since the battle began.

His usually cold expression softened.

“If you stay…”

“They win.”

Those words struck harder than any scream.

Tears filled Aurora’s eyes.

She nodded.

The tunnel smelled of damp earth and ancient stone.

Only the soft glow of Aurora’s Moonstone lit the path.

Selene ran beside her.

Elyra led the way.

Behind them, distant crashes echoed from above.

Aurora looked over her shoulder.

“They’ll be okay…”

It wasn’t a question.

Elyra didn’t answer.

Instead, she stopped before a massive circular stone door carved with wolves, ravens, and a crescent moon.

At its center was an empty crescent-shaped socket.

Elyra looked at Aurora.

“The Moonstone.”

Aurora slowly removed the pendant from her neck.

The instant it touched the stone…

The entire tunnel shook.

Silver light poured through the carvings.

Ancient symbols awakened one by one.

The door slowly opened.

Beyond it lay a breathtaking underground sanctuary.

Crystal pillars reached toward a ceiling painted with constellations that shimmered like a living night sky.

At the center stood a marble pedestal.

Resting upon it…

…was a magnificent silver sword.

Its blade glowed with moonlight.

Its hilt was shaped like a pair of outstretched wings.

Aurora took one hesitant step forward.

As she reached the pedestal, a warm voice echoed through the chamber.

“Welcome home… Moon’s Daughter.”

The sword lifted into the air by itself.

It floated toward Aurora.

Everyone watched in stunned silence.

The hilt settled gently into her outstretched hand.

The moment her fingers closed around it—

A wave of silver energy burst through the sanctuary.

Images flooded her mind.

A woman with her mother’s face.

The Moon Goddess.

Lucien kneeling before a throne.

Kael standing beneath a blood-red moon.

And finally…

A shadowed figure wearing a crown of black crystal.

The figure turned slowly.

Its glowing violet eyes met Aurora’s.

Then it smiled.

“I’ve finally found you.”

Aurora gasped and dropped to one knee as the vision disappeared.

The sword still glowed in her hand.

Elyra stared in awe.

“The Blade of Selene…”

Lucien’s voice echoed from the tunnel entrance.

“It has chosen her.”

He stepped into the sanctuary, his clothes torn from battle.

Moments later, Kael emerged beside him, blood staining his shoulder but very much alive.

Neither of them looked at the sword.

They looked only at Aurora.

Because they had just witnessed something that hadn’t happened in over six hundred years.

The Moon Goddess had chosen her champion.
