Chapter 23

It was as if everything seemed to stop as we entered the club. We had arrived a little late, only because I was trying to find the perfect outfit, and on our arrival, every head turned to look at us.

It reminded me so much of the days when I was still pulling my clothes to entertain people that their gazes were robbing and breaking down my self-defense, and I was shrinking into myself.

I felt the comforting presence of Alex squeezing my head as if to reassure me, and I swallowed the ball of saliva that had pooled in my mouth.

“It is a new club, and there is no one from this area that recognizes you.” I whispered below my breath, trying to reassure myself, and with the firm touch of Alex, I began to relax, and I raised my gaze, staring at the crowd.

So far, so good. I couldn’t see anyone that I would know, and once my initial fear had gone, I could tell that it was going to be fun.
