LOGINThe pain in my chest stayed with me long after Julian walked away. I spent the rest of the day locked in my assigned room, staring at the plain walls and trying to block out the constant hum of the veil aura under my skin. Ethan brought lunch and dinner, saying little. His kind eyes watched me each time, careful and steady. He never pushed for answers, but his quiet presence felt like the only safe thing in this cold place.
By nightfall I could not sit still any longer. The bond ache had turned into a dull throb, but my wolf paced inside me, restless and eager. I needed air. Space. Anything but these four walls that still smelled like Julian.
I waited until the hallway grew quiet. Then I slipped out barefoot, still wearing the black dress from the assembly. The pack corridors stretched long and dimly lit. I moved quickly, following the faint scent of fresh air toward what I hoped was an exit.
My heart raced as I pushed through a side door into the night. Cool air brushed my face. Trees surrounded the back grounds of Goldenville territory, thick and dark. Freedom seems to call me from a distance.
I broke into a jog, then a full run. The veil aura flickered weakly the farther I went, but the bond pain sharpened in my ribs with every step away from the main building, away from Julian. I ignored it. My bare feet slapped against grass and dirt. Branches whipped at my arms. I kept going.
The fence rose ahead, tall and wired. I grabbed the links and started to climb.
A low growl cut through the darkness behind me.
I froze.
Heavy footsteps came closer. I dropped back to the ground and turned slowly.
Julian stood there in the moonlight, shirtless and breathing hard like he had run the whole way. His eyes burned with fury. The veil aura flared between us at once, golden fire bright and angry in the night.
“You really thought you could run?” he said, his voice cold and dangerous. He closed the distance in three strides and grabbed my arm, yanking me away from the fence. “This territory is mine. You are mine.”
The touch sent sparks racing over my skin. The aura pulsed hot. My wolf surged forward with stupid joy at his nearness, while my mind screamed that the cage was closing tighter.
I yanked my arm free even though my body wanted to lean in. “Let me go. You don’t want me here. I don’t want to be your prisoner.”
He laughed once, sharp and bitter. “I truly don’t want you here, but the Goddess made a mistake and tied us together. The veil shows everyone we are mates. There is no way I will let you make me look weak by running away.”
His scent wrapped around me, pine and storm and raw power. It made my head spin. Heat pooled low in my belly, unwanted and strong. I stepped back, but he followed, pinning me against the rough bark of a thick tree. His hands braced on either side of my head. The veil aura glowed brighter, casting golden light on his face and chest.
Up close I saw the tension in his jaw and the conflict in his dark eyes. He hated this pull as much as I did, yet he could not step away.
“You feel it too,” I said quietly, keeping my voice steady. “The ache when we are apart and the heat when we are close. Why fight it so hard if you will not reject me?”
Julian leaned in closer. His breath brushed my lips. “Because a mate makes you vulnerable. My parents trusted the bond and it got them killed in the last pack war. I built Goldenville on strength alone. You are a crack I cannot afford right now.”
His words carried real pain beneath the anger. For one second the cold mask slipped and I saw the man under the Alpha. Ruthless, yes, but also haunted.
My wolf whined softly. I lifted a hand without thinking and touched his chest, right over his heart. The veil aura flared wildly at the contact. His skin burned hot under my fingers.
“Then stop treating me like a chain,” I whispered. “Let me be something more.”
For a moment he did not pull away. His eyes grew darker, heavier with something deeper than anger. He leaned in slowly, his lips so close to mine I could feel his breath. The air turned thick and hot between us. My whole body flushed with heat. The bond between us shone brighter, pulling us closer, promising everything we had been fighting.
Then footsteps crunched on the leaves nearby.
Julian jerked back like he had been burned. The almost-kiss shattered.
Ethan stepped out from the trees, breathing fast. “Alpha. I saw her leave the wing so I came to help with the search.”
His voice stayed soft and kind. His hazel eyes met mine for a brief second, offering quiet support.
Julian’s entire body went rigid. The veil aura flared blood-red with sudden rage. He stepped away from me completely. The mate-bond ache hit me hard in the chest and I pressed a hand there, breathing through the sharp pull.
Ethan noticed and moved closer. “Selina, are you okay? You know you don’t have to break yourself to survive him. There are other ways to make this easier.”
His words landed gently. Not possessive. Not commanding. Just honest concern.
“I am fine Ethan”,Thank you.
Julian’s hand shot out and slammed against the tree beside my head with a loud crack. Tree Bark flew everywhere. I flinched but held my ground.
“Did I not warn you to never utter his fucking name in my presence again?” he growled, his voice thick with jealousy. His eyes bored into mine, possessive fire burning bright. “Don’t you dare test me, little wolf.”
The jealousy showed raw and ugly. He hated that Ethan could give me the comfort and kindness he was too stubborn to offer.
I met his stare without backing down. My thoughts stayed guarded even as my pulse raced. This Alpha could pin me with a look, but he could not control the small spark of defiance growing inside me.
Julian stood there for one second, breath coming fast, the veil aura pulsing wildly between us. Then he pushed off the tree and stormed away into the darkness, shoulders tight with anger he would not admit.
Ethan stayed behind, watching me with quiet worry. The bond ache throbbed wider now that Julian had left again.
I leaned against the tree, chest tight, trying to steady my breathing. The night air felt colder without Julian’s heat nearby. Yet some traitorous part of me already missed the storm.
Come on,Ethan said finally, voice low and steady. I’ll walk you back before someone else notices you are out here.
“Thank you”, i said to Ethan "For not treating me like a problem to control”.
Ethan gave me a small smile. “You are not a problem, Selina. You are just caught up in something that is bigger than both of us.” He paused, then added softly, “If you need to talk or train to get stronger, I can help. Quietly.”
His offer hung in the air like a lifeline. I almost said yes right there, but before I could answer, heavy footsteps returned. Ethan straightened and stepped aside as Julian burst back through the trees, eyes still blazing with that same jealous rage. He did not look at Ethan. He grabbed my wrist in a firm grip and pulled me away from the tree, away from Ethan, and straight toward the main building.
“You think you can find comfort in him?” he snarled, voice cold and angry. “While the bond burns us both? Not tonight.”
He dragged me through the side door and down the dimly lit corridors without another word. Ethan called out once, but Julian ignored him completely. My bare feet stumbled to keep up as we moved deeper into the pack house.
When we reached my room, Julian shoved the door open and pushed me inside. He followed right after and slammed it shut behind us, locking it with a sharp click. The sound echoed in the sudden silence.
He turned to face me, chest rising and falling fast. The veil aura flared hot and golden again, filling the small space with heat and tension. His dark eyes locked on mine, still full of anger and something far more dangerous.
“No more running,” he said, stepping closer until I backed against the edge of the bed. “Tonight you stay right here with me , or you will feel exactly why it is important not to mess with me.
The air grew thick between us once more. My heart hammered as Julian closed the last bit of distance, his body heat wrapping around me like a promise and a threat all at once.
The first crack had just become a fracture. And I had no idea how far it would break us both.
“Which pairs,” Julian said.Patricia did not hesitate. “Brian and Silva. Cara and Fenn. And Derick with his bonded.” She paused. “All three pairs had quarters on the north side of the compound.”“Closest to the Grey Reach,” Ethan said quietly.“Get everyone else into the central hall now,” Julian said to Patricia. Away from the northern wall. Keep them moving and keep them calm. Do not use the word pull and do not mention the Grey Reach.”“What do I tell them,” Patricia said.“Tell them it is a precautionary measure following the breach of pack security this morning. That is true enough.” He paused. “And Patricia. Anyone who resists the move to the central hall or gives reasons why they specifically need to go north, detain them. Gently. But detain them.”Patricia left at a controlled run, which was the fastest she ever moved without making it look like a crisis to anyone watching.Julian turned back to the room. His eyes moved to me and stayed there.“What are you thinking,” I said.“
Julian turned from the door and looked at Ethan.“How fast does the pull work,” he said.“Faster on bonded pairs,” Ethan said. “Single wolves feel it like a mild draw, something they can resist without knowing they are resisting. Bonded pairs feel it as something more urgent. More compelling. The connection between them amplifies the signal.”“Like a frequency,” I said.“Exactly like that,” Ethan said. “The broken bond energy recognizes active bonds and pulls harder on them specifically.”Julian looked at me. I could feel through our bond what he was thinking. “We are a completed veil bond,” I said. “We are not just a bonded pair. We are the source of the extracted energy he used. If the pull works harder on other bonded pairs, what does it do to us specifically?”Ethan was quiet for a moment that was not a comfortable one.“You would feel it before anyone else in the pack,” he said. “And more intensely than anyone else. The veil bond is the origin point. The broken bond energy in th
We moved fast back to the pack with Julian setting a hard pace but Nobody argued. Rhoda walked between two warriors with her wrists free, which was either a gesture of trust or a calculated decision that she had nowhere left to run. Hector stayed close to Julian and they talked in low voices the entire route back, the kind of conversation that had no wasted words in it.I walked beside Ethan.“The texts,” I said quietly. “How bad is it?”He stayed quiet at first. That was enough answer.“The Grey Reach seal took three veil bloodline holders to build,” he said. “One veil holder is strong. Three means whatever is inside needs massive force to lock away.”“What is inside,” I said.“The texts call it a convergence,” he said. “They took many broken bonds and forced them into one spot on purpose. When a veil bond breaks hard the energy does not fade. It goes somewhere. Someone long ago learned how to collect it.”“Into the Grey Reach?,” I said.“Into the center of it,” he said. “The seal ho
Nobody spoke for a moment after Ethan finished. Then Julian said, “What do you mean finished.”Ethan turned to face him fully. “The veil property in Selina’s bloodline is not just rare. It is functional. It does not sit passive inside the bond. It works. It produces something that a person with the right knowledge could collect and concentrate on.” He paused. “I always thought it was theoretical. Something written about in old texts that nobody had actually attempted.”“You are saying someone attempted it,” Julian said.“I am saying the evidence suggests someone succeeded,” Ethan said. The clearing had gone fully quiet around us. The rival wolves who had not fled were tied up at the far end. Hector stood near them with two warriors. He had the expression of a man waiting for instructions.I looked at Rhoda. “You knew about this.”“I knew they were collecting something from the bond,” she said. “I did not know what they planned to build with it.” She held my gaze steadily. “That is the
Everything happened at once.Hector came off the ground faster than anyone his size had a right to. The two warriors beside him split in opposite directions, cutting the rival wolves off before they could do anything. Ethan burst through the eastern tree line with three pack members behind him, blade already drawn, and the clearing exploded into chaos instantly.I moved toward Julian. Two rival wolves stepped into my path. I dropped my weight the way Ethan had shown me, shifted my angle, and went through the gap between them. One grabbed my arm. I used his grip to spin quickly and drove my elbow into his throat. He went down hard and fast.I reached Julian and got behind him. The bindings on his wrists were thick rope but a simple knot. I dug my fingers in and tried loosening it fast.“Behind you,” Julian said, completely calm.I ducked low. Something whistled through the air right over my head. I stood back up without pausing and kept working the knot with quick fingers.“How long,”
I had approximately thirty seconds to make a decision.Tell Patricia and risk Julian dying before anyone reaches the western ridge. Go alone and walk directly into whatever Rhoda had built out there. Neither option was good but one of them was way worse.I folded the note and put it in my pocket. Then I went to find Patricia. She was still in the training yard. I pulled her close and kept my voice at the lowest register that still counted as speech.“Listen carefully and do not react,” I said. “The eastern route was a distraction, right now Julian is on the western ridge and he is surrounded. I need you to get Ethan back from the eastern route and redirect him west. Quietly. And until Ethan is back to the pack and briefed, Nobody else moves.”Patricia’s face did not change. Not even slightly. Whatever she felt about what I had just said, she kept it entirely internal.“The note said come alone,” she said.“I know what the note said.”“You are not going alone.”“I am going now,” I said.
