EVE

Mike looked different. Older, somehow. There were lines around his eyes that hadn't been there before, and his smile had a sharpness to it that made my skin crawl.

"Don't look at him," Adam said quietly. "Don't give him the satisfaction."

But I couldn't look away. Not when Mike excused himself from his group and started walking directly toward us.

"Eve," he said, his voice carrying across the hall. "It's been too long."

Every conversation in the room stopped. Everyone was watching now.

  • Bound by Fangs and Blood   52: A strange council meeting

ADAMThe Council meeting was scheduled for three days later at a neutral location. Some conference hall in the middle of nowhere that supposedly belonged to no one.I didn't trust it. Didn't trust them. But I showed up anyway because what else could I do?Eve insisted on coming, which meant Lucia came too. And where Lucia went, Circe followed to maintain the power link. So all four of us walked into that conference hall together, probably looking like the most dysfunctional family unit the Council had ever seen. There were five Council members waiting for us. Not the full fifteen, just a small committee. I recognized Dr. Helena Cross, which was good. She'd voted in our favor before. The others were strangers."Alpha Adam Magnus," the head councilman said. He was an older wolf with gray hair and tired eyes. "Thank you for agreeing to meet with us.""Like I had a choice," I muttered.Eve elbowed me. "What my husband means is we're happy to negotiate a peaceful solution.""Yes. Peaceful.

EVELeaving the Void was harder than entering it.We packed up everything we could carry, which wasn't much. Lucia's blankets, some food, the supplies the witches had given us. Adam dismantled the makeshift crib carefully, like he was hoping we might come back someday."Ready?" Circe asked, standing by the door with her pack.I looked around the cabin one last time. Two weeks. Just two weeks of peace and normalcy. It didn't seem like enough."As ready as I'll ever be," I said, adjusting Lucia in the carrier strapped to my chest. We walked back through the forest toward where we'd entered. The journey took longer this time because we kept stopping to rest. Lucia was heavier now, and I wasn't used to carrying her for long distances."There," Adam said, pointing ahead. "That's the oak tree. The boundary."We stood there for a moment, none of us moving."Last chance to turn back," Circe said."No,"

  • Bound by Fangs and Blood   50; Leaving the void

EVEThe Void wasn't what I expected.I'd imagined something dark and scary, like a horror movie. But when we crossed the boundary at dawn, following the witch's guide to the invisible line that marked the entrance, it just looked like more forest."This is it," the guide said, stopping abruptly. She pointed ahead. "Past that oak tree is the Void. I go no further.""It looks normal," Eve said, adjusting Lucia in her arms."That's what makes it dangerous. You won't know you're in trouble until it's too late." The guide handed Adam a pack of supplies. "Good luck. You'll need it."She turned and walked away quickly, like she couldn't get away from us fast enough.I looked at the oak tree, then at Adam and Circe. "Well. Here goes nothing."We crossed the boundary. For a moment, nothing happened. Then I felt it. A sort of tingling sensation, like walking through a curtain of static electricity. The air felt d

EVE I woke up to silence. That was wrong. Lucia never slept silently. She snored, made little grunts, moved around in her sleep. But right now, there was nothing. I shot up in bed, panic flooding through me. The bassinet beside our bed was empty. "Adam!" I shook him awake. "Where's Lucia?" He sat up immediately, alert. "What?" "She's gone! The bassinet is empty!" We both scrambled out of bed, racing into the main room of the cabin. What we found made us both stop short. Circe was sitting in the rocking chair by the fireplace, holding Lucia. Both of them were glowing softly, that same silver and gold light from yesterday. But this time it was controlled. Gentle. Almost peaceful. "What are you doing?" Adam demanded. "Teaching her," Circe said without opening her eyes. "She woke up an hour ago. I felt another surge building, so I came to help before she exploded again." "You should have woken us." "You needed sleep. Besides, this is something only I can do." Circe's eyes open

  • Bound by Fangs and Blood   48; Circe's offer

EVEThe world exploded in white light.I couldn't see anything except the blinding glow coming from Lucia's tiny body. The vampire holding me screamed and let go, his hands smoking where he'd touched her.I stumbled backward, clutching Lucia against my chest even though the heat radiating from her was almost unbearable. It felt like holding a star."Circe!" I screamed over the roaring sound that accompanied the light. "I can't hold her much longer!"Circe appeared beside me in a blur, her hands reaching for Lucia. The moment she made contact, the light shifted from pure white to a mixture of white and silver. The temperature dropped from burning hot to merely warm."I've got her," Circe gasped. "Eve, let go. I need full contact to channel this."I didn't want to let go of my baby. Every maternal instinct I had screamed at me to hold on. But Lucia's body was still rigid, her eyes still glowing that terrifying white, and I had no idea how to help her.I released her into Circe's arms.C

  • Bound by Fangs and Blood   47! I shall protect my daughter

EVEEverything happened too fast. One moment we were standing in Dr. Chen's clinic, the next Adam was throwing me and Lucia behind an examination table while Circe engaged the vampires."Stay down!" Adam roared, shifting into his massive black wolf.I crouched over Lucia, my body shielding her as glass and debris rained down. She started crying, her little face scrunched up, and I felt power surge from her tiny body."No, baby, not now," I whispered frantically. "Please not now."But Lucia's fear triggered another energy burst. Golden light exploded from her, throwing back one of the attacking vampires."Did that baby just..." one vampire started."Told you she was special," the lead vampire snarled. "Get her. NOW!"Adam tore into them, his wolf form massive and deadly. But there were three of them, all older vampires with speed and strength to match his.Circe was fighting two at once, her movements a blur. "Eve! Take Lucia and run!""I'm not leaving you!""You have to! Get her somew
