Elena's POV
I didn't even answer him as I quickly turned on my heels and bolted out of the living room.
I was too disoriented to drive so I trekked down to the road, crossing the intersection without a second thought.
I didn't even see the car speeding towards me until it was too late. And just when I thought it would crush me to the road, I felt a strong pair of arms on my waist.
The next thing I knew was that I was floating in air, pressed tightly against a rockhard wall of chest.
The man's sandalwood scent intoxicated my senses mercilessly, momentarily numbing the pain in my stomach.
"Are you okay?" His rich baritone voice drifted into my ears, his breath searing my skin.
I lifted my head to look at his face before answering but that moment, the pain in my stomach returned and I let out a shrill cry as I felt my world crumble.
The next time I came to again, it was morning and I was in the pack's hospital ward. My head ached so bad as I sat up on the bed.
The details of everything that happened last night swapped my mind, Ashanti poisoning me and a stranger saving me.
Who was the stranger?
As if on cue, the door opened and a uniformed nurse walked in.
"What happened?" My voice sounded unsteady.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. But you lost the baby."
My heart crushed in my chest and sank to the pit of my stomach.
For five months, I had painstakingly avoided anything that could cause a miscarriage. I had denied myself things that I loved so much.
I had struggled so hard, hoping things would work out fine this time, but Ashanti shattered my hopes.
I'd always known she was a bitch in college, but I didn't know she could as cruel as destroying my chance at becoming a mother.
Not that alone. She was even conniving with Michael to use my license illegally. Does that mean Michael also knew she poisoned me?
Sadness settled in my heart as my mind trailed to four years ago before we got married. I had just lost my parents and I had no money to pay for my final semester at medical school.
I couldn't get help from anyone, not even Ashanti who was my best friend at the time. But just like a knight in a shining armor, Michael came into my life.
We discovered our matebond and although I thought he would reject me since his family was rich, he accepted me and paid for my fees in full, as well as Ashanti's own.
Three of us became bestfriends, and the romance between Michael and I blossomed so fast, maybe a little too fast because I soon got pregnant just before we graduated.
Ashanti spread the news round school and I was ridiculed for being promiscuous which eventually led to I and Ashanti's separation as bestfriends.
However, Michael stood by me through those tough times. Although, he continued being friends with Ashanti, I still married him.
Michael had wanted me to give birth before even trying to work as a doctor and I'd agreed. What I didn't know was that I would have a miscarriage.
And that affected me so badly because at that point, Michael's parents were bent on seeing that I gave Michael a child before pursuing my career.
Unfortunately, things only got worse. I kept having miscarriages upon miscarriages. I became so obsessed with having a child that I completely forgot about working as a professional doctor.
At some point, I even thought Michael was too good for me since I couldn't give him a child.
But now, I knew.
He'd ruined my career on purpose, He'd been using me like a fool all along.
"Ma'am?" The nurse's voice sliced through my straying thoughts.
I gave her an apologetic look, then quickly asked;
"Who brought me here?"
I caught a glimpse of wariness in her eyes just before she quickly glanced away.
"Well, it's against the hospital's policy to divulge such information to you."
I raised a questioning eyebrow. "Someone brought me here and now, it's against,"
"I'm really sorry." She interrupted me. "I'm really not at liberty to reveal his identity. You are fine now and free to leave anytime you wish."
Without giving space for more questions, she breezed out of the room, leaving me to ponder about this mysterious stranger.
Then, it crossed my mind. Today was the D-day. I had to get to Alpha Horace before Michael and Ashanti did.
I quickly left the hospital and few minutes later, I got home. I had barely entered the living room when a voice stopped me.
"Don't tell me you just had another miscarriage!"
It was my father-in-law, Patrick Wilmington. His wife, Becca, Ashanti and Michael were also seated there.
"Father, this isn't the right time"
"It's a yes or no question. Did you have another miscarriage?"
"Yes." I answered. "And just for the records, I lost the baby because Ashanti poisoned my food."
They all gasped in shock.
Finally, Michael spoke.
"Elena, I know you're still pissed about the chicken sauce, but making false accusations is,"
"False accusations?" I cut him off, not believing he just said that.
Anger exploded in my chest like a volcanic eruption. He and his bitchy best friend were the reason I was in this condition.
"You want to pretend you didn't know what she did? What you both did?"
But I wasn't ready to expose that I knew about the medical license yet. I had to expose them to the Alpha first.
"If nobody has nothing more to add, I'll take my leave now." I said and started towards the stairs.
However, my mother-in-law, Becca stopped me.
"Where do you think you're going?" Her voice was hysterical as she blocked my path.
"What are your plans now that your rotten womb can't hold my son's child?"
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut and my blood boiled instantly. I had to count to ten in my head before I did something I would regret, like punching her in the face.
Then, Ashanti's taunting voice drifted into my ears.
“Oh please, Mrs Wilmington,” she sneered.
"Asking Elena such questions is like asking a barren woman to produce twins. But you don't have to worry about having grandchildren anymore."
She paused to give me a snide smirk, then faced the other people who were now looking at her with curiosity and anticipation.
Satisfied by their reaction, she dropped the bomb with the enthusiasm of someone revealing a winning lottery ticket.
"I'm three weeks pregnant with Michael's child!"
For a fleeting moment, the words didn't actually sink in. I wanted to believe I was in the middle of some kind of epic horror movie.
Wasn't it enough that he was using my medical license? He cheated on me too?
Lumps gathered at my throat as the weight of their betrayal clawed at my chest, threatening to tear me apart.
I whipped my gaze to Michael, tears dropping down my cheek from the movement.
"How could you do this to me, Michael?" My voice was rough with hurt.
He said nothing but refused to look me in the eye. Since when had he been cheating on me? Had he always been playing me for a fool since the beginning?
I lowered my head as my tears dropped like rain. How could I fail to notice he was this type of person for four good years?
But that was just the beginning of my torture.
Becca jumped as she squealed in delight.
"Is this for real? Am I really getting a grandchild?" She asked as she held Ashanti. "Oh, moon goddess, thank you. This calls for a celebration."
Patrick was also smiling as he congratulated both Ashanti and Michael while I just stood there, frozen.
Were they really ignoring the fact that their son cheated on his lawful wife, his mate paired with him by the moon goddess?
No! I shouldn't even cry. None of them were worth my tears.
Not Michael, not his parents. And definitely not Ashanti.
If they could tear my heart apart in the most painful way possible with their betrayal, then two could play at that game.
As of this moment, it was sealed! I'll make Michael and Ashanti pay in the most painful way possible.
I wiped my tears off and collected myself calmly.
"Alright, then," I started, drawing their attention. "Since you all have made your decision. I'll help you even more."
I paused for their reaction, before dropping the bomb.
"Michael , let's break our matebond and get divorced!"
Horace pov. After I dropped her off at home, I drove to the creek. With a lot on my mind, I didn’t want to be around anyone for fear of doing something hurtful. But as I stood there. I realized I may have already crossed that line with Elena with my earlier actions. But at that moment, I couldn’t help it.“It’s been three years, Elaine.” I breathed. And I knew I should move on already. In fact, I wanted to. With Elena. She was the perfect fit for me.Completed me in ways I never even knew about before. And even though things were not yet official with Michael, I wanted to make her mine for real. Not the fake public show thing but the real thing. However, I couldn’t deny that Michael bringing up Elaine in such a way tugged something hard at my chest. And it led me momentarily to do the one thing I shouldn’t even dare think of.Hurt Elena.I took a deep breath and walked back to my car.I had to apologize, I had to make things right. When I got back to the house, knowing she was already
Elena’s pov.“Are you okay?” Micheal asked Ashanti in the most sorry excuse of the word caring. Probably because he was staring back at me the whole time like he was scared of checking on his wife in his presence.“I’m not.” She barked then looked me dead in the eye, “Did you do this on purpose, Elena? You knew I was about to walk past, and somehow your leg was there? That was no mistake.” She yelled at the top of her lungs, perhaps looking to draw attention. The restaurant was one of the most exquisite in the crimson moon, so only people of such caliber came there, and they didn't act the way our poor actress was acting.I put my hand on my chest in feigned surprise, “My goodness, why ever would you think this low of me, Ashanti? We are friends, remember?”“Friends, so you want to swear that you didn’t trip on purpose.” She sneered, still on the floor. She really needed attention, but unfortunately for her, people didn't seem to be buying it.“Oh my goodness, all she has to do is get
Elena’s povWe sat opposite each other in the sushi restaurant I had suggested. It was all silent as we awaited our orders until Horace’s voice broke out.“So how’s treating your cousin? How’s the almost new dad fairing?”His nose flared like he wanted to say something completely stupid but when he opened his mouth, “Fine, alpha. We are doing very well.” Was all that came out.“Though I’d like to understand the reason for this invitation.”Horace turned to me, as if giving me the floor to speak, and speak I did. “Well, I arranged the meet-up. So we could all talk and come to some agreement.”The chef came out with our food, serving it gently across the table. When it was time for the drinks to be poured, Ashanti held the chef’s hand back from pouring into her glass.“You see, I’m pregnant, for my husband here.” Her hand brushed Michael’s shoulder. “So I don’t do alcohol. You know, don’t need to risk a miscarriage, and I heard once it happens the first time, there’s a high chance of it
Horace’s pov.“You’re okay, you've been kind of silent ever since we dropped that woman off,” I asked her as we had lunch in the dining room.“I’m fine… I'm actually fine. She repeated absentmindedly if she still had something on her mind.I raised a brow. “Doesn’t seem like it.”She sat up. “Well, you’re right. So I’m having this crazy thought.”“Okay, then share it.”She shook her hands in disagreement. “No, at least until I confirm it. I can’t actually act on it.”A little surprising, but “o—Kay. So how do you intend to do this? Do you need my help?”“Actually, I do. And I know it might sound sort of off, but stay with me, okay.”“Yes, ma’am,” I replied with all seriousness, earning a slight chuckle from her.“Alright, so tomorrow night, let’s invite Michael and Ashanti out for dinner. A truce.”I dropped my fork immediately. A truce, what does that mean? Turning to her, I asked, “A truce? I mean, how would that work?”She shook her head, “Oh, I know what you’re thinking, but I pro
Elena‘s pov.“What?” Horace and I said in unison.“How did that happen?” He added.Logan let out another heavy sigh. “Someone ended him last night. Someone who probably knew we were coming.”“Shit,” Horace mumbled, pacing back and forth.“Just calm down.” I was about to pat his back when I suddenly held my hand back.He gave me a look as if he wasn’t surprised. And immediately, my mind flashed to the craziness I had spilled in the car.Fuck. Just great.I turned back to Logan. “We were so close to finding the truth. This is such a major setback.“Yes, it is, ma’am.”I stared at him longer than usual. Everyone was now seeming like a suspect. “How did you even manage to find out his address? I mean I know it’s your job and all, but this place looks so rote, it takes great skill to really catch it.”He smiled proudly, but there was no hint of hiding anything in his demeanor.“Well, I wish I could take all the credit, ma’am, but unfortunately, that’s now possible. I was only able to quick
Horace’s pov.“That was Logan, said he just found one of the impostors’ addresses,” I said, standing with my hands in my pockets. Her eyes shot up to me in curiosity. “Hey, baby, mama and papa will come play with you later, okay?” She said to Ethan before turning to the maid, “Could you take him upstairs, please?”“Yes, ma’am.”After they left the room, she turned her attention to me, “Really?”“Yup. Dr John Brownson. I remember his face clearly. He was one of the doctors who spent a lot of time here and took a lot of my money in the name of treatments, also.”“Oh my goodness. What an evil man. Well, that’s a good thing. You can finally confront him and maybe also get a few answers out of him.”“Oh, that’s what I plan on doing.” I sat beside her as my jaw tightened in anger. My mind is swirling around the situation all over again. Those bastards had the audacity to lie to and risk my son's health in their quest for some quick cash. By the time I’m done with them, they’ll never remain
