Buying another phone wasn't an option. She simply couldn't afford it.

Just then, her stomach growled loudly. She wrapped an arm around it, hoping it would ease the ache.

It didn't.

Yesterday's breakfast had been the last thing she'd eaten. She swallowed hard, trying to ignore the hunger gnawing at her stomach. Going downstairs wasn't an option.

If her parents found her...

She closed her eyes tightly. She'd rather sleep hungry than get beaten again. She slowly lay down on the thin mattress, her body exhausted and her stomach painfully empty. Sleep came only after several minutes of tossing and turning.

*********

Early Morning [Vanessa's Room]

Morning came quickly. Golden rays of sunlight streamed through the bedroom window, falling across the figure sleeping peacefully on the small bed.

Vanessa.

For the first time in a long while, she looked at peace, completely unaware of what awaited her.

Suddenly—

Splash!

Ice-cold water drenched her from head to toe. She shot upright with a gasp, her heart pounding wildly.

"W-What..."

Laughter echoed through the room.

Vanessa looked up.

Standing beside her bed were her twin sisters. Mira and Anna. Mira, the blonde-haired twin, held the now-empty bucket, while Anna, with her striking red hair just like Vanessa's, folded her arms across her chest. The only difference between them was the color of their hair. Both wore identical mocking smiles.

"Aww... the princess is finally awake," Mira sneered.

"So you finally decided to come back after running away?" Anna added with a smirk.

"I don't even know why you bothered coming back," Mira said, as she tossed the bucket aside. "You know you're only going to keep suffering."

Before Vanessa could react, the twins lunged at her. One grabbed a fistful of her hair while the other seized her arm.

"W-What are you doing? Let go!" Vanessa cried, struggling against them.

They ignored her. Together, they dragged her out of the room. Her bare feet scraped against the floor. When they reached the staircase, they didn't stop. They dragged her down the stairs without the slightest bit of mercy.

Thud!

Her shoulder slammed against the edge of a step.

Bang!

The back of her head struck another. Her knees scraped painfully against the rough wood as they continued dragging her downward. Fresh bruises bloomed across her body. Vanessa tried pushing them away. They didn't budge. Instead, Anna drove a hard kick into her side.

"Agh!"

Mira immediately followed with another kick to her head. Before Vanessa could recover, Anna planted her foot firmly on her stomach.

Vanessa choked violently. Blood spilled from the corner of her lips, dripping onto the staircase and staining the polished wood crimson.

Now Vanessa felt weak, unable to move. She just lay motionless where her sisters had left her at the bottom of the stairs. They didn't even bother looking back at her. They simply walked toward the backyard.

Vanessa remained there, trying to lift herself up, but she couldn't move at all. She felt sore, too drained, and helpless. This was what she went through every single day, receiving such horrible treatment from her own family. She couldn't help but think it was simply her bad luck. She lay there for about twenty minutes before trying once again to get up.

"Hmm..." she groaned in pain as she used the wall to support herself. Finally standing, she remained there, lost in thought, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

"No food in the kitchen. So who's going to do the house chores? Me?" A woman's voice broke the silence.

It was the twins' mother.

The twins stood beside her, looking like exact replicas of their mother. They had inherited her brown eyes too. The three of them stood together like models, each with a figure anyone would envy. They looked at Vanessa with nothing but mockery while she stood there, tears welling up in her eyes.

"You know I don't like repeating myself, Vanessa. And when I do, you know what comes next," Mrs. Brown said, looking at her with so much hatred—nothing close to a mother's love. No one would believe they were related if not for the slight resemblance between them.

"I was... about to, Mother," Vanessa replied, trying to compose herself.

"That's a lie, Mother. She was asleep when we went to her room. She looked so peaceful," Anna smirked, making sure to get Vanessa into even more trouble.

"Is that so?" Mrs. Brown asked, raising an eyebrow.

Vanessa wanted to defend herself, but she couldn't. With the twins around, anything she said would only make things worse. Mrs. Brown walked towards her. Vanessa instinctively stepped backward, but the wall behind her left her nowhere to escape. Mrs. Brown grabbed a fistful of her hair and yanked it hard, glaring at her with disgust.

"House chores are supposed to be done before everyone wakes up. But guess what? None of them were done." She pulled even harder.

"In addition to your chores, you're going to wash everyone's laundry—including the security guards' uniforms—wash every single car outside, and prepare lunch before the end of today."

She paused, her lips curling into a cold smile.

"And if you fail..."

She didn't bother finishing the sentence. Vanessa already knew what awaited her. Mrs. Brown shoved her away before suddenly remembering something.

"Oh... and you're not going to work today."

Without another glance, she walked out. The twins went upstairs together, laughing amongst themselves.

Vanessa was left standing alone.

Another day off...

At this rate, I'll lose my job.

And I still can't find my phone...

Ignoring the pain all over her body, she hurried to the kitchen to prepare lunch before starting the rest of her chores.

[Azure Hotel and Suites - Devian's Suite] They had both started eating, but of course not without Devian having to practically force Vanessa to eat. She sat across from him, eating slowly while still looking slightly uncomfortable with the whole situation. She wasn't used to sitting down and having dinner on a dinning table at her home talk less with him like this, especially when she knew she was supposed to be working. “Where's your phone?” he asked. Vanessa immediately looked at him with an 'I don't trust you look' . Devian couldn't help but laugh a little. “I don't bite."he paused. Seeing she still didn't give a response, he continued." It's okay if you don't want to give it to me.” She simply nodded, no longer bothered by the question, faced her food and continued eating. She must admit that this is the best she has eaten in days or years? She stayed focused on her food trying to savor the taste and the feeling. For a while, neither of them said much. They were bo

“Please, I really need to get home,” she said, hoping he would change his mind. Of course, he knew her trick.“That won’t work. You’re supposed to be with me until after my dinner, right?” She nodded. He slowly stood after releasing her hands, then settled beside her. Vanessa quickly sat up and turned her back toward him, hiding her blush. Devian smirked, already aware of her reaction. She quickly stood up. “I’ll go get your dinner ready.” He shook his head.“There’ll be no need for that. It’s already been taken care of. Let’s go.”He stood up, walked to the other side, and held his hand out to her. She hesitated for a moment before taking it. He then led her outside. As they headed out, Vanessa kept thinking about how much trouble she was in.'I’m so fired.' But then another thought crossed her mind.'Why is he so cool about all of this? And why is he holding my hand?' “You okay?” he asked when she sighed without realizing it. She nodded her head, still wondering why he was asking.

[The Browns Residence] The house was unusually quiet as no one was at home. Mira had the place to herself. She was in the backyard, enjoying the swimming pool. The afternoon sun reflected across the surface of the water as she swam from one end to the other, completely lost in her own world. She surfaced, pushing her wet hair away from her face before taking another deep breath and diving in again. She had been there for more than an hour. She hadn't noticed that there was someone watching her and was very close to her sight of view. Ethan stood near the glass doors, his arms folded across his chest. His gaze remained fixed on Mira admiring her, but his mind was somewhere else entirely. He hadn't planned on coming here but couldn't help him self. He had tried several ways to approach her but she didn't budge. .l His thoughts kept returning to everything that had happened lately—the way Mira had been acting, the way she always avoided him. He sighed quietly. He really lik

She froze. Her eyes slowly shifted downward. An arm was wrapped around her. Her heart immediately began pounding. Who's this? Where am I? She inhaled a deep breath. She remembered waiting for her boss to return before she fell asleep. For few minutes, she had already forgot her current situation. He must be very mad at me. On the other hand, Devian was still wondering what Vanessa was doing. He knew she was awake, but he heard no sound coming from her. 'Hold on.' Then she realized. This is my boss's room, but whose hand is this? Her heart skipped. It can't be. She closed her eyes and took her lips into her mouth. She began to turn slowly, trying not to wake whoever it was. When she turned fully and saw him. "Ahhhh!" Vanessa shouted out loud, unable to stop herself. As Vanessa screamed, Devian forgot his pretense and quickly sat up. The first thought that came to his mind was his mom finding out that Vanessa was in his room and had even slept there. He acted witho

"Vanessa" No response. "Vanessa." He called her name again. Still nothing. He gently shooked her shoulder. She didn't even stir. He sighed. "You must have been exhausted." For a moment, he considered waking her again. Instead, he carefully removed her shoes and pulled the blanket over her. He was about standing up he lost his balance then fell on her. He looked at her hand she had already held unto him without him knowing. He tried to stand up, but her grip on his shirt was too tight. Very unexpected for a girl her size. "Please, don't go", Vanessa said as tears flowed out of her eyes. He softened at her tone. "You must be really stressed out" he held her chin. "I definitely would have loved to take you from here but you are too fragile for my dark world." he paused for some minutes. "But don't worry, I'll definitely be by your side always. This is a promise from your husband" he smiled so wide. He tried to adjust himself to the other side of the bed care

While in Devians room, Vanessa was already done with her chores but she couldn't leave. She had heard his mom's voice. "Seemed like they were arguing about something". But she couldn't leave despite wanting to. She had heard about her, a very strict person just like her son is. "If I go, I might get fired for disobeying him and I don't want to meet his mom" she sighed in frustration. "What to do" she moved all her equipments towards the door and decided to wait for him to come back. She couldn't risk her job. "Where to sit"she then moved to the bed side and sat on it. "Wow it really soft nothing like the brick called bed I sleep on." "I'll just take a quick nap before he comes back," she murmured. Within minutes, she was fast asleep. ********** [Unknown Place] This place doesn't look like where anyone should be or live in.
