Rayen

The blast tore through the eastern wing.

Glass exploded across the master suite as mountain rain poured through the shattered windows. The air filled with smoke, dust, and the bitter smell of burning silk.

Before I could even scream, Lautaro’s arm locked around my waist.

He dragged me beneath the massive mahogany bed, covering my body with his.

Glass struck his back.

“Lautaro!”

“I’m fine. Stay down.”

At the doorway, Aconcagua was thrown against the frame. He stumbled, caught himself, then dropped behind the wall for cover.

“Altiplano hit squads!” he shouted over the ringing in my ears. “They’re in the lower courtyard! They brought heavy weapons!”

My heart pounded.

Mother.

The word wouldn’t leave my mind.

My mother the woman who had cried with me when Aconcagua disappeared, who had held me while I mourned him had ordered this.

She had sent armed men after her own children.

I pushed against Lautaro’s chest.

“Let me up.”

“Stay down!”

Gunfire erupted from below.

Lautaro pulled me closer, shielding my head with one hand while reaching beneath the bed with the other.

A metallic click sounded.

A hidden compartment opened.

He pulled out a tactical radio and tossed it beside us.

“Unit Four, suppress the main foyer,” he ordered into his lapel microphone. His voice remained frighteningly calm. “Seal the sub-basement vaults. Execute perimeter breach protocols.”

I stared at him.

Even now, with his house under attack, he was completely in control.

“Lautaro.”

He glanced at me.

“Why did you let me bring the stiletto?”

His expression didn’t change.

“Why didn’t your guards take it from me at the church?”

I needed an answer.

Everything around me was falling apart, and I couldn’t understand what part of it had been planned.

Lautaro adjusted his sidearm.

Then he looked directly at me.

“You think my security missed a blade hidden beneath your gown?”

My stomach dropped.

“My chief of security noticed it the moment you arrived at the cathedral.”

“You knew?”

“I personally cleared it.”

He reached up and wiped a streak of soot from my cheek.

“I gave the order to let you carry it to the altar.”

“Why?”

The question came out almost as a whisper.

“To humiliate me? To give me false hope before you executed me?”

His jaw tightened.

“Because I never intended to execute you, mi rosa.”

Another explosion shook the walls.

Lautaro’s eyes remained fixed on mine.

“I knew who put that blade in your hands. I knew Beltrán wanted you to attack me.”

I stared at him.

“He wanted your men to kill you in self-defense,” Lautaro continued. “Then he’d have a martyr and a reason to ignite another war.”

My chest tightened.

“So you let me carry a weapon because…”

“Because I wanted you to understand something.”

He leaned closer.

“I would rather let you put a knife against my throat than allow your own family to turn you into a pawn.”

I couldn’t speak.

All this time, I had thought Lautaro had allowed me near him because he trusted his power to control me.

But he had known.

He had known about the blade.

He had known about Beltrán.

And he’d allowed the trap to close around him because he wanted me to see the truth for myself.

Before I could process it, the bedroom doors exploded inward.

The heavy mahogany doors crashed against the floor.

Smoke rolled into the room.

Three armed men in black tactical gear stormed through the opening, rifles raised.

“Clear the Don!” the leader shouted.

Aconcagua moved first.

He launched himself at one of the men, driving him into the wall.

The other two opened fire.

Lautaro twisted immediately, placing his entire body over mine.

Bullets tore through the mattress above our heads.

He fired three times.

One of the mercenaries dropped.

The second stumbled backward, blood spreading across his vest.

Then his hand disappeared inside his tactical gear.

He pulled out a grenade.

“Lautaro!”

The mercenary pulled the pin.

Lautaro grabbed the iron frame of the mahogany bed.

His muscles tensed.

With a violent shove, he overturned the massive bed, sending it crashing onto its side between us and the doorway.

The grenade hit the floor.

“Hold onto me!”

Lautaro’s arm wrapped around my waist.

I clung to him.

The grenade exploded.

The world disappeared into white light.

The blast ripped through the room, tearing apart the remaining floorboards.

I felt the ground vanish beneath me.

For one horrifying second, there was nothing beneath us.

Then we dropped.

“Lautaro!”

His arms tightened around me as debris rained around us.

We fell through smoke, shattered wood, and burning fragments of the bedroom.

I couldn’t tell which way was up.

My body pressed against his as we plunged deeper into darkness.

The air rushed past my ears.

Then I saw it.

Far below us, through the clouds of dust, was a vast black space beneath the estate.

The underground vaults.

Lautaro held me tighter.

And together, tangled in silk, rubble, and darkness, we disappeared into the hidden depths beneath his house.

MILLARAYThe smell of stale espresso hung in the tactical room. Outside the reinforced windows, morning light barely reached through the jagged peaks, turning the fog purple and gray.I leaned over the monitors, my eyes burning after six hours of watching thermal feeds. When the safehouse sent a red-alert breach last night, my heart nearly stopped. Lautaro’s encrypted signal went dark for three agonizing minutes before returning and routing his location to our secondary mountain fortress. He had survived the blast. But he wasn’t alone. The heavy iron doors at the end of the stone hall opened with a low hydraulic groan.I straightened, my hand moving toward the Glock at my hip.First came Lautaro. He leaned heavily against the inner archway, his dark hair wet with rain. A bloody makeshift bandage was wrapped around his torso beneath a torn tactical jacket. His skin was pale, but his jaw was still set. Then she stepped out from behind him.Rayén.My fingers tightened around the weapon.

RAYÉNThe safehouse suddenly smelled of lavender, bleach, and old wood, nothing like the gunpowder and blood from the vault. We were in a secluded penthouse on the edge of the financial district, an off-the-books property Lautaro owned through a shell company. Below us, Santiago carried on as if nothing had happened.Up here, the silence felt suffocating.I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at my reflection. My wedding gown was ruined, its hem stiff with blood that wasn’t mine. My hand still throbbed from gripping the Sig Sauer.Behind me, I heard a leather belt being unbuckled, followed by a sharp breath.Lautaro sat on the dark leather sofa, his tactical vest and ruined shirt gone. My eyes went straight to the angry red gash along his right ribs. The rebar hadn’t gone deep, but it had sliced him badly. He held a needle and thick suture thread between his teeth, his amber eyes fixed on me.“Are you just going to stand there?” His voice was low and rough. “Or are you goin

RAYÉNThe white-hot line of thermite hissed through the steel blast doors, throwing sparks across the concrete floor.Through the damaged intercom, my mother’s voice came again, distorted by static.“Her blood belongs to Santiago.”I couldn’t move.My boots felt rooted to the floor. The forensic dossier was still clutched in my left hand, the pages crumpled beneath my trembling fingers.Everything I had believed for the past six months was falling apart. My hatred had never been mine.It had been a leash. My own mother had placed it around my neck, handed the other end to Beltrán, and watched as I walked willingly into this marriage with a blade hidden beneath my wedding gown.“Rayén, get behind the desk.”Lautaro’s voice cut through the noise. He stood beneath the flashing red emergency lights, his Sig Sauer aimed at the melting blast doors.Blood ran from his temple down the side of his face, but his hands remained steady.“Lautaro…”My voice shook.“She called me ‘the girl.’ She ta

RayenThe fall ended in a violent crash of splintered wood, crushed concrete, and a cloud of suffocating grey dust.We slammed into the lower level a dimly lit, reinforced sub-vault hidden deep within the foundations of the estate. The impact knocked the air straight from my lungs in a ragged gasp. My vision swam with static, dark spots dancing at the edges of my sight as I coughed against the burning powder coating my throat.Above us, the gaping hole in the ceiling rained down embers, hot plaster, and jagged shards of glass. The muffled thrum of distant gunfire still echoed through the stone structure above, but down here in the dark, the air was cold, damp, and smelling of ancient earth and gunpowder.I was lying on my back, completely pinned.Lautaro had taken the brunt of the fall. His heavy frame was braced over mine, his forearms planted on either side of my head, shielding me from the heavy debris that had plummeted after us. His face was inches from mine, covered in soot, a t

Rayen The sight of my brother’s face scarred, blood-streaked, but unmistakably alive—shattered everything I thought I knew.“Aconcagua…”His name came out as a broken sob.My mind couldn’t catch up.Six months of mourning.Six months of staring at an empty grave beneath the cold Altiplano rain.Six months of feeding my anger until revenge was the only thing keeping me standing. All that grief had been for a dead man who was now breathing in the doorway of my husband’s bedroom.I pushed myself off the bed, but my legs trembled beneath me.“You’re… you’re alive.”“Get back, Rayén!”Aconcagua’s voice cut through the room.He didn’t look like a brother returning from the dead. His face was tense, desperate, almost frightened.“Lautaro, drop the weapon! Drop it now!”Lautaro didn’t move.He stood between us, his broad body shielding me from the doorway. His Sig Sauer remained trained directly at Aconcagua’s chest.“Lower your weapon, Aconcagua,” Lautaro said calmly. “You blew your entry.
