Mia’s screams hadn’t left me. Even after days later, I could still hear them echoing in my skull, sharp and piercing, like claws scratching the inside of my head.

Her face, soaked in tears, twisted in agony as the silver blade carved her skin. The smell of blood and burning flesh clung to me and my own voice, broken and desperate, rang again and again in my memory.
