MasukPeople tend to forget stories whenever they are desperate. It was why there was a dead body laying at the Prince’s feet when he woke that day. Someone had tried to kill him and had stupidly touched his hands, thereby leading to a disastrous death. Had they easily forgotten that the Alpha Prince’s touch was death?
~Fenrir Academy News • SORAYA “Someone tried to kill the Prince!” Adele practically screamed as she barged into the room. Her high-pitched voice distracted me from the novel I had picked up from the library. My love for novels never dwindled. “You said?” “I said someone tried to kill Prince Daryl.” I was startled at Adele’s statement. I was right when I told the Prince that there were people in this school who wanted him dead. That was the thing about power — when you wielded it, you became a target for the ones who would do anything to claim it. “When did that happen?” “Today!” Adele reached for my hand and dragged me up. “People are still clustered around his room, come and see for yourself.” We made our way to where the crowd of students gathered outside of his room, which was the next room after ours. I risked a glance inside the open room and gasped at what I saw. Prince Daryl stood in all his glory, wearing an all-black outfit, and not forgetting his gloved hands, but what made me gasp was not the Prince this time — it was the dead body that was being wheeled out of the room. The dead man was not covered in blood like it would seem if the Prince had launched a counter-attack. No, the man was completely drained of all the blood he could have, and I could see his wolf claws extended like he had tried to shift but could not. I raised my curious gaze to the Prince’s again, and when his eyes met mine, there was no smirk adorning his face. Instead, he had a lazy expression of boredom as if he was waiting for the body to be wheeled away so he could slam the door to get rid of the jobless onlookers. Never taking my eyes off the Prince, I asked Adele rather shakily, “How did the assailant die?” “He touched the Prince’s bare hands. No one touches the Prince’s bare hands and lives. His hands drain the life out of the victim.” As I made my way to the classroom, Adele’s words never left me — no one touches the Crown Prince’s bare hands and lives. It was the reason why he always wore leather gloves, so he would not accidentally kill anyone. He was cursed, Adele had said, cursed by a witch whom his grandfather had offended. His hands were like a bloodsucking weapon. Quinn had failed to tell me that tiny bit of information. I could only imagine what would have happened if I had touched his bare hands — I would have met my end even before I finished my mission. That aside, there was also the nagging curiosity about who had tried to kill him. Was there another Wolf Hunter in the school? Or was it one of the werewolves? What was their motive for the attempt? The question was a hypocritical one because even I had no motive whatsoever in my attempt to kill the Prince. Quinn had not told me who the client was and why he or she wanted the Prince dead, and I had not asked. It was better to do my job without knowing anything than to get wrapped up in the fumble of the supernatural world. Even after six months, the supernatural world was a jungle I would not want to sink deep in. “Karter!” I blinked at Prince Daryl’s sudden appearance before me. “What the heck,” I mumbled, but the Prince was not there for jokes. He grabbed my hands and practically began to drag me out of the classroom. “Are you insane, what the heck is this, Daryl Ender?” Daryl did not stop until we got to the locker room where he shoved me against one of the lockers, pinning my wrists above my head. “Was it you?” he questioned, his gaze burning. His sun-kissed orbs seemed to glow even brighter, and the way he had his hands gripped over mine felt like he was trying to rein his wolf senses. “What are you talking about?” “You know what I am talking about, Karter. Do not freaking try to play dumb.” He was talking about the attempted murder, I knew, yet I scrunched my nose up and scoffed. “I do not know what you mean, your Highness.” Prince Daryl shut his eyes, pressing onto my hands with urgency. The rough patch of his gloves bit at my skin, a bitter reminder of what those hands could do. When he pried his eyes open again, they were bloodshot, changing from brown to gold like they could not decide which color to remain as. “I am not playing with you, Karter!” he snapped. “And I am not playing either, Ender. What the heck? You cannot just come at me and start spitting accusations of something I know nothing about!” Daryl groaned and released me. “So you know nothing of the attack?” he inquired. I put my arms down. “I am not that stupid. Besides, if I wanted to attack you, I’d do it myself, not send someone to do my dirty job,” I deadpanned with an eye roll. Daryl ran his hands through his hair, distress written over his face. “How am I to believe you? You made it clear since the first day that you do not like my existence,” he managed to utter. I scoffed. “And I remember telling you that day that you had no evidence to prove,” I answered dryly. “You are good with the swords, but yet you do not have any magic even though you claim to be a witch.” He was making a statement, not asking a question. No slipups. I could hear Quinn’s voice in my head. My fingers clenched into fists, searching desperately for the right answer to his accusation. “Not all witches can wield magic,” I finally countered. I had spent my whole nights since I arrived reading about witches and what they could do. I needed to know about them to perfect my disguise. And when I finally found out that piece of information, I understood why Quinn made my guise as a witch. “Spellcasting, potion making — those are the powers witches wield. Magic is only for a selected few,” I continued. Daryl looked at me with disbelief. “You have this all figured out, don’t you?” And for the second time, I repeated again, “I have no idea what you are talking about, your Highness.”SORAYA "Girl, where have you been? You missed out on what happened not quite long ago!" Adele beamed at me as I entered the room. Dolly scoffed at my presence, but I didn't really mind because I was in a dilemma. I had been trying to reach Quinn but she wasn't picking my calls. I feared the worst had happened, and as much as I wanted to go back to the settlement. I knew I couldn't because the royal soldiers will be there, and what if they caught me? Daryl's threat still rang at the back of my head and honestly I just wanted to dip and get the hell out of eden. But I couldn't, because of this silly sense of responsibility that cling to me like a second skin. I really hoped Quinn wasn't dead. "Soraya, are you okay?" Adele asked me. I sighed, pulling out my dagger from my sides and laying it on the table beside my bed, before I finally sat on my bed. "I'm fine." Dolly looked at me, her eyes glinting with curiosity or more like she was suspicious of me. "W
DARYL I had followed her, and I had seen. The prickling in my chest at the betrayal I felt was not hurt... far from it. It was anger. Pure, unyielding anger that could only be quenched if I had blood on my fingers. I had told Soraya to meet me in the library, as if speaking to her would change what I saw. I did have a penchant for doing ridiculously stupid things anyway. Her scent hit me before I even saw her. Stupid, adulterated scent, yet still distracting enough to have my wolf senses purring in my head. I flexed my fingers in my gloves as she finally came to me. She was dressed in her signature black slacks and black shirt, her curls falling over her shoulders. I was going to confront her, but it felt more like I was being seduced. I could see the outline of the dagger strapped to her belt. "I'm only here because you seem to have a misconstrued notion of me." I scoffed at her words. "Since when have you ever cared about what I
SORAYA What was it about trouble that seemed to follow me everywhere I went? "Good morning, soldiers." I scoff at the title. It is 6:30 in the evening, and we are all here standing under the looming moonlight like a tribute waiting to be offered. "Yeah, right," I hear Dolly say with a scoff beside me. Also what I was thinking. Our instructors today are the two palace instructors Sir Sinclair had been bragging about — the very best, he'd said. One is tall enough to block out the sun, and the other looks like she belongs on a magazine cover rather than behind a sword. They both had a sword strapped to their waist."Alright, listen up," the tall one barked, his voice carrying across the training grounds. "I'm Commander Aldric, and this is Lieutenant Vale. Today we will work on your sword skills." Lieutenant Vale stepped forward, her piercing blue eyes scanning our formation with undisguised disdain. "Because with the petty training you've undergone as stude
SORAYA I was falling... I couldn't help it, and then i landed with Ethan's pendant clutched in my hands. How the hell do I even have it with me? It was the same place I had seen the first vision. Plain, and void of anything living. "You are here again." The voice was the same as the last one, but it was much closer this time, like she was right in my ear. I stayed calm. "Who are you, and why am I here again?" "One question at a time little girl, I am no robot." I rolled my eyes, wondering if she could see the act. "Who are you?" A low chuckle. "It is quite unfortunate that you don't recognise my voice, I remember I spoke to you when you turned 5. Filthy human memory," she scoffed, "and so fragile." "I'm quite sure you didn't bring me here to insult me now, did you?" I was a bit braver this time. Not that the strange voice didn't scare me, but at least I had my comeback ready most especially because I needed answers and the weird voice was probably the
SORAYA When Daryl came back with the healer, he stepped back to allow her to do her job. The healer — Miss Lena — held up her fingers. "Can you see this movement, Karter?" She asked, wiggling them. I wanted to roll my eyes because obviously I could see her fingers, but I didn't. I nodded instead. "Good. Do you feel any pain?" I shook my head. "Good. You are discharged then. You can get a tonic potion at the pharmacy just to be safe. My work here is done." She smiled and walked away, leaving Daryl and I alone. "Soraya—" I was already off the bed. "Where are you going?" He asked. "To find Ethan Farrow." "You just passed out twice." "I'm aware." I found my shoes at the foot of the bed and reached for them. "Which is exactly why I need to find Ethan Farrow." He was quiet for a moment. Then he fell into step beside me as I walked out of the clinic without being invited. "I didn't ask you to come," I said flatly. "I know." He didn'
Back in Elroy... SORAYA Being a supernatural thrives on just one feeling—rage—and to be like them even as a human, you must learn to channel yours as well. There were a lot of scenarios going on in my head, on why Ethan Farrow had Ilana on her knees, his dagger to her throat, and a murderous intent in his eyes. But none of them seemed plausible, as I thought they at least got along better than he with Daryl. "Put that dagger down, Farrow." Daryl didn't move from where he stood, he was still dangerously close to me, even though his hold had dropped from my waist. The music had stopped, and the students had scrambled out, leaving only a few onlookers, and even they were inching out carefully. Cowards. "She has something of mine, and until she gives it back, she's at risk of her blood exhausting on my dagger, and even you, cannot stop me, Prince," Ethan responded darkly. Ilana was strangely calm. In fact, I could swear she had a smile on her face despite her se
SORAYAIt's been two weeks since I arrived at Fenrir, and I had nothing to show for it. I had learnt nothing about the Prince, perhaps except his infuriating smirk and intoxicating scent. When I woke up this morning, I was met with a distraught and it distracted me. First, I had woken up so late th
SORAYA"Oh, dear heavens! It is the crown Princess."I walked into the cafeteria along with Adele, who kept skipping around and jumping in excitement."I am trying to understand what you mean by it is the crown Princess, and why you are acting like you have won a lottery," I spat at my roommate wit
DARYL“Who are rogues?”I puffed out a breath of frustration. I was not listening to the teacher at all. My concentration was on a certain hazel-eyed witch who was going about her day like nothing had happened. Her whole presence in Fenrir Academy was a lie. If I could just block out the feelings
SORAYAA lot had changed about me, which was why I had put to use the very first thing I had learned as a Wolf Hunter: To survive in the supernatural world, never show them fear, always make them know you are in charge. These creatures feed on fear, and you should learn to not give them a taste.A
