“What doesn’t he know?” Lucien whispered to himself in the dark first, then he started to type away on his phone.

‘What is that?’ He sent it to Harmon.

‘Have you by chance heard that there was an issue of double Alpha occurrence just like yours with Xavier at Dravenmoor?’

‘Yes, I heard. And there seems to be no evidence of it anywhere, except words of mouth.’

Lucien could remember that he asked Maren about it weeks ago too and Maren only told him to focus on practicing for the competition.

His throat closed up a bit, “Elias, can we not talk about it now please?” He heard shuffling from the other side and just knew that Elias just sat upright or did something with his body movement, “What’s wrong?” “I’m at the hospital.” He told him. “Okay… as you should be. Did anything happen?” “She had an emergency. Elias, I thought she was gone or something.” His voice shook as he spoke. “And the doctor said her medications has to be improved as she has been placed on maintenance drugs.” Elias breathed in heavily, “Is she better now? How’s the situation?”“Stabilized. Haven’t been allowed to see her yet.” “So, you need money now.” Elias sighed, holding the phone tighter to his ears. “Yes, and everything is a whole lot right now. I don’t think I’ll be able to listen to the result of the votes just yet when my mother needs money that costs medication. I can’t hold both things at once right now… I can’t.” Elias seemed to nod from the other side first because his response was del

The car smelled of old leather of cigarettes. Lucien settled on the seat, staring at Harmon warily. He hadn’t expected to see the man so quickly, and definitely not on a day like that. Sure, Harmon had said that they’d talk the next day, he just didn’t expect it to be physical. “Are you going anywhere? I can take you there.” Harmon said, breaking the silence. He was exactly what his voice suggested — old, measured and the kind of man who had watched everything happen from a distance and had gotten tired of only watching. “No. I'd rather we just talk here.” He didn’t trust Harmon enough yet to lead him to his house. “Well then, I—“ Lucien cut him off a little bit rudely, “How did you know my current location?” He asked. Harmon looked a little bit shocked at the sudden interruption but he said nothing. “Duke told me. You don’t think that Marcel doesn’t know where your mother is being treated, right? I remember Duke mentioning the hospital once, and I knew you’d be

Xavier had always woken up earlier at home than he did at school — partly because the home wasn’t so comfortable that he’d wake up at any time he wanted to, or it was just because he was made to wake up at early hours as a kid to train and that just grew up with him. Either way, he was certain that he woke up before Amber did that morning. And his father surprisingly wasn’t anywhere around in the morning. He walked downstairs and paused in his tracks upon seeing Amber in the kitchen. And by the look of things, she woke up way before he did. He could tell in the way she had her schoolbooks scattered around her like she was studying. He said nothing at first, just watching her from behind. But a part of him, on seeing her made him remember everything that went down with Lucien the day before. After about a minute of just staring at Amber, he realized that she wasn’t indeed studying because she had been staring at the same paragraph for the past one minute and she didn’t seem to noti

He’s trying to control the narrative this time around, and he’ll stand at nothing to achieve that.’ Lucien’s mouth opened wide a bit. ‘He knows how it went down back then?’ ‘Yes.’ The response came instantaneously, then another one followed: ‘Let’s talk better tomorrow. My drugs are kicking in.’ Lucien sent back an ‘okay’ then locked his phone and threw it on the bed beside him. He

Xavier stared at the table for a beat too long, the answer hanging somewhere in his throat. Marcel seemed to already know the response without Xavier even saying shit. But he kept his emotions at bay. He just leaned back against the chair, held Xavier’s gaze even though the person in question was barely looking at him. “I don’t care what you feel, and you should know by now that I’ve never cared.” He spoke with that controlled voice that had always been more frightening than a shout. “The only fucking thing I care about is what you do with how you feel. And here’s what you’re going to do — you’ll win this competition. There’s no other option, and when you finally win it, I’ll put the folder away and maybe we can forget that anything like this ever happened.” Xavier finally looked up and held his father’s face. Marcel’s eyes had always held no emotions but at that moment, staring at him made him feel like he was looking right at a stranger who he wasn’t familiar with, and not the m

Xavier sat opposite his father in his office. He had in fact been in the same office since they got back from the academy and he was starting to get antsy. He knew what was going on ahd he wouldn’t fall for it. His father had called him into the place for a quick meeting immediately they got back, but he hadn’t said anything reasonable since then. He knew that Xavier would want to go back to Amber or to even rest ftom all the stress of Dravenmoor. Then at some point, he’d want to snap as he’d want to grt out of the office already. Then, Marcel would turn around and remind him that he didn’t have control over his emotions anymore. So, he had to do everything within his power to sit still. Two hours had passed and all he could do was to play away on his phone — the one whose battery would soon run down by the way. Only then did Marcel glance up from the papers before him and gave Xavier all attention. “I’ve given you everything you’ll need to win this cleanly.” He said. “What els

"What's with the face? Dravenmoor's most intelligent.” Lucien looked up from his plate. Finn was staring at him from across the dining table, chin propped on his fist, the picture of concern and amusement at the same time. "I'm fine." "You look really bothered.” Lucien stared down at his pl

The field behind Dravenmoor's dodgeball didn't look like much on a regular day — stretch of open ground, tree line at the far end, sky too wide and too grey above it. Today it looked like a warzone. Fifty, maybe sixty students spread across the grass in training gear, some already mid-drill, other

“Lucien Thorne.” Lucien sat across from Mrs. Aldric, hands flat on his thighs, back straight. He tapped his feet repeatedly on the floor. "Your mother was admitted three days ago." Mrs. Aldric slid a paper across the desk glancing at Lucien. "The hospital contacted us as her next listed instituti

“Hey, nerd!” Lucien trembled at the weight of the familiar voice even from its distance. "Answer me!” The voice sounded closer with heavy footsteps. Lucien’s breathing hardened whilst he splashed a handful of water over his stinging face. The plan was to act oblivious. However, before the water c
