“Detention!” Mr. Finrar's finger jabbed at the door as if it had personally offended him. "Out! Detention room. Now!" Lucien moved first and Xavier followed, releasing his collar as though he was dropping something that bored him then he brushed his shirt, completely unbothered. The detention room was three doors down — small and cold with two rows of desks facing a board nobody ever wrote on. Mr. Finrar pointed at two seats beside each other and crossed his arms. Neither of them sat and Mr. Finrar's eye twitched. "Sit. Down." Lucien sat but Xavier didn't. "Mr. Lockwood," Finrar called out in a warning tone. Xavier pulled the chair out slowly, made a whole performance of it, then dropped into it like he was carrying the weight of the whole world. Lucien stared straight ahead. He could feel Xavier beside him — the heat, the stillness, the way the whole room seemed to rearrange itself around him. The field behind Dravenmoor's dodgeball didn't look like much on a regular day — stretch of open ground, tree line at the far end, sky too wide and too grey above it. Today it looked like a warzone. Fifty, maybe sixty students spread across the grass in training gear, some already mid-drill, others stretching in clusters. A panel of three judges sat elevated on a platform at the far end, clipboards out, faces unreadable. Banners marked the trial zones. A large board on the right listed names — candidates already signed and numbered. Lucien stood at the registration table with a paper in his hand. The registrar looked at the form.
