The night I was sold to King Ronan Draven, the palace servants warned me never to look him in the eyes.

“Keep your head down,” the old woman whispered as she tightened the silver chains around my wrists. “Every woman who has looked at him with desire has died before dawn.”

I laughed, though my throat was dry. “Then I’ll look at the floor.”

The woman didn’t smile.

Outside the carriage, thunder rolled across the mountains. Black rain fell over the kingdom like ash, soaking the banners that hung from the palace walls. The fortress ahead of us rose from the cliffs like a beast carved from midnight stone, its towers clawing at the moon.

The Shadow Palace.

I had spent my entire life stealing bread, jewels, and secrets in the lower districts of Valebryn. I knew the stories. Everyone did.

King Ronan Draven, the cursed ruler.

The king whose lovers were buried before sunrise.

The king who spoke to shadows.

The king who never removed his black crown.

The carriage stopped with a violent jolt. My stomach twisted.

“Out,” the guard ordered.

Cold wind struck my face as I stepped onto the palace courtyard. Torches burned blue instead of gold, and dozens of armored soldiers watched me with the same expression one gives a condemned prisoner.

A priest in silver robes approached, carrying a bowl of dark water.

“State your name.”

“Lyra Vale.”

His pale eyes lifted to mine. “Do you come willingly before the Shadow Throne?”

“No.”

The guards tightened their grip on my arms.

The priest sighed as though I had disappointed him. “Truthful. That is rare.”

He dipped his fingers into the bowl and touched my forehead. The water burned like ice.

The palace doors groaned open.

Warmth spilled from within, carrying the scent of incense, smoke, and something darker—blood.

I was marched through endless corridors lined with black marble statues. Every statue depicted the same man: tall, crowned, and terrifyingly beautiful. In each carving, shadows curled around his feet like living creatures.

At the end of the hall stood a pair of obsidian doors.

The guards stopped.

“From this moment,” one murmured, “your life belongs to the king.”

The doors opened.

The throne room was vast enough to swallow a cathedral. Moonlight poured through stained-glass windows, painting the floor in silver and blue. At the far end, upon a throne carved from black crystal, sat the man who ruled the kingdom.

King Ronan Draven.

I forgot to breathe.

He wore black embroidered with silver thread that glimmered like frost. His dark hair fell across his forehead, and the crown upon his head looked less like jewelry and more like a weapon. But it was his eyes that stole the strength from my knees—storm-gray, cold, and impossibly ancient.

I lowered my gaze at once.

Too late.

A strange heat rushed through my left wrist.

I gasped.

Beneath the chain, pale light seeped through my skin.

The room fell silent.

The priest stumbled backward. “Impossible.”

Pain exploded through my arm. I tore the chain away, and a glowing crescent mark blazed across my wrist, silver-white against my skin.

Whispers erupted around the throne room.

“The Moonborn…”

“It cannot be.”

“She died centuries ago.”

My pulse thundered in my ears. I had never seen the mark before in my life.

Ronan rose from the throne.

The shadows around him moved.

Not swayed by wind.

Moved.

They slid across the floor like living smoke, curling around his boots as he descended the steps. Every instinct screamed at me to run, but my legs refused to obey.

He stopped a breath away.

“Look at me,” he said.

His voice was low, dangerous, impossible to resist.

I lifted my head.

For one suspended moment, the world vanished.

I saw loneliness in his eyes.

Rage.

Hunger.

And a darkness so deep it felt endless.

His gaze dropped to the glowing mark on my wrist. Something flickered across his face—shock.

Then his fingers closed around my hand.

The mark burned brighter.

A pulse of silver light burst between us, and the shadows in the throne room recoiled as though struck.

The priest fell to his knees.

“Your Majesty,” he whispered hoarsely, “the bond has awakened.”

Ronan did not release me.

“What are you?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

His thumb brushed the mark, and heat climbed my arm, spreading through my chest in a way that was frighteningly intimate.

“Liar,” he murmured.

Before I could answer, the great windows shattered.

Glass rained from the ceiling.

A scream echoed through the throne room.

Three masked assassins dropped from the darkness above, blades aimed directly at the king.

The guards shouted.

Ronan turned, shadows erupting around him like black fire.

One assassin lunged.

Ronan caught the blade with his bare hand.

Blood hit the floor.

The assassin’s scream became a choking gasp as darkness wrapped around his throat.

The other two rushed forward.

I should have run.

Instead, I stared.

Because in the silver moonlight, with blood on his hand and shadows devouring his enemies, King Ronan Draven looked less like a man…

…and more like the monster the kingdom feared.

The fifth bell rang. Its sound rolled through the cavern like a judgment from the heavens, deep enough to shake the broken bridge beneath our feet. The glowing river surged below us, silver water crashing against the black stone walls as though the mountain itself had begun to breathe. The guardian’s enormous eye remained fixed on me.“Choose,” it repeated.Ronan stepped closer, shadows coiling around him. “She owes you nothing.”The guardian finally turned its head toward him. “Shadow king. You stand between the Well and its heir.”“I stand between her and anyone who would use her.”The creature’s silver pupils narrowed. “You already use her. The bond feeds your darkness.”Ronan’s jaw tightened. The bond pulsed between us, and for an instant I felt the sting of those words inside him.Fear.Guilt.A terrible certainty that the guardian might be right.I squeezed his hand before I could stop myself. His gaze flicked to mine. The fear eased. The guardian noticed that too.“Dangerous,”

Chapter 8: The Bell of the MoonwellThe bell rang again. Its sound rolled through the mountains like thunder trapped beneath the earth, deep enough to vibrate in my ribs. The silver leaves around us trembled, shedding pale light onto the forest floor.Ronan’s face went hard as stone.“We’re too late.”Lucien wiped blood from his mouth and stared toward the northern mountains where the faint silver glow pulsed between the peaks. “Not yet. If Cassimir has only begun opening the Moonwell, we still have time.”Ronan looked at him sharply. “How do you know?”A shadow crossed Lucien’s expression.“I’ve seen the ritual before.”The words settled over the clearing like frost. My pulse quickened. “When?”Lucien sheathed one blade and avoided my eyes. “Years ago.”Ronan stepped closer, dangerous calm radiating from him. “You told me you’d never been near the Moonwell.”“I lied.”The silence that followed was worse than shouting. The blood moon hung above us, staining the silver forest crimson.

The heartbeat echoed through the chasm.Slow.Massive.Alive.Each pulse vibrated through the stone beneath my feet, through my bones, through the glowing mark on my wrist. Silver light flickered across my skin in time with that terrible rhythm.Ronan stared into the abyss, shadows twisting violently around him.“Something is waking,” he said again, more to himself than to me.A deep crack split the floor.Instinct took over. I grabbed his arm just as another section of stone collapsed into the glowing void below. The abyss swallowed the rubble without a sound.“We need to leave,” I whispered.Ronan tore his gaze away from the chasm. For a heartbeat, I saw something I had never seen in him before.Fear.Not fear for himself.Fear of what was beneath us.He seized my hand. “Stay close.”The contact sent heat racing up my arm. “At last.”The whisper brushed my ear like cold breath.I spun toward the voice, but darkness swallowed everything. The chamber had become a void where even the silver glow from my mark struggled to survive.“Ronan?” My voice trembled.“I’m here.”Relief hit me so hard my knees weakened. Then a black flame ignited in his palm, casting a circle of dim light around us.The chamber looked different now.The altar was gone.In its place stood a woman.Silver hair flowed to her waist, untouched by the wind that howled through the room.
