Chapter 4

Penulis: Little Brat
Three days later, word got out that Samson had been forced to withdraw from university.

He went to Rosalind in tears as he said, “Rose, I’m done for! My education is over. My reputation is destroyed. Everyone is condemning me.”

He sobbed as he clutched at her sleeves. “Ethan agreed to it back then. Why is he trying to ruin me now?”

She looked at his wretched and helpless state.

As she recalled Ethan’s deranged behavior that day with the knife, waves of anger surged through her.

She should have known this earlier.

After losing Nina, he was no longer as calm and gentle as he used to be.

She had been too soft-hearted. That was why she had indulged him time and again.

That same afternoon, she went straight back to the villa.

She burst through the door and looked at Ethan coldly, saying, “You did this.”

Without looking at her, he responded, “Yes. What of it? He hurt Nina. He destroyed everything I had. I’m just implementing a little justice.”

She was so angry that she could barely catch her breath.

“Justice?” she scoffed. “Ethan, have you completely lost it?”

She raised her hand. The bodyguards behind her stepped forward.

“From today on, you’re staying in a sanatorium. I’ll only let you come home when you come to your senses.”

Ethan’s head snapped up. His face was ashen. “Rosalind, you wouldn’t dare.”

“Try me.”

The bodyguards stepped in and hauled the weakened Ethan by his arms.

He thrashed, screamed, and kicked, but every effort was useless.

They forced him into a car and drove him out to the most isolated sanatorium on the city’s outskirts.

Life over there was bleak and hopeless.

At first, Ethan fought back with all his might.

He ranted and raged, telling people there that he was not sick.

No one listened. Instead, they pumped him with sedatives, bound him with restraints, and gave him even colder treatment.

They underfed him and deprived him of proper sleep. During the day, he was shoved around and berated. At night, he was locked in a frigid, pitch-black room.

Each day brought fresh bruises and new wounds.

On the seventh day, Rosalind finally came.

She wore a long black coat. She carried a hint of exhaustion that was almost imperceptible in her eyes.

She froze the moment she saw him.

He sat slumped in the corner, hair disheveled and face drained of color. Red marks from the restraints still circled his wrists.

“Are you ready to admit you were wrong?”

Ethan slowly lifted his hollow gaze to look at her.

“I have nothing to admit.”

She frowned and said in an icy tone, “Ethan, stop being so stubborn. You were the one who asked me to be with Sam in the first place. You gave me up to save Nina.

“Now, you turn around and ruin his education and his future. Isn’t that burning the bridge after you’ve crossed it?”

Every word she said cut him to the core.

She seemed to have forgotten that it was Samson who had used the bone marrow match as leverage.

She was the one who had fallen deeper in love with Samson and forgotten her family. Then, she forgot her child and him.

In the end, he was the one blamed.

Ethan let out a bitter laugh. It was so cold and empty that tears streamed down his cheeks.

In the next instant, he raised his hand.

He put every last bit of his strength into it, striking Rosalind hard across the face.

She stood frozen. Her cheek stung with a fiery burn.

Ethan lowered his hand and said, “The only thing I did wrong was not seeing you for who you really are.”

He said nothing more and never looked back. He steadied himself against his worn and aching body and slowly pushed himself to his feet.

The past week spent in suffocating darkness and unending agony had wrung him dry. Each step he took sent a jolt of pain through his bones. The red marks on his wrists still pulsed with a dull ache.

As Rosalind stared at his gaunt, stubborn frame, her heart tightened unexpectedly.

She was angry and frustrated, but seeing him in such a sorry state, she could not bring herself to lash out.

The frustration only made her feel more suffocated and unsettled.

She suppressed those emotions and said coldly, “Get in.”

Ethan quietly settled into the back seat. His eyes widened when he saw who was sitting in the passenger seat.

It was Samson.

Samson could barely conceal the smugness in his gaze as he toyed with his phone.

The screen glowed brightly, displaying a social media page.

When Ethan focused on it, one look was all he needed to fully understand what was on the screen.

Samson’s image was completely turned around. He was playing the victim card.

He painted Ethan as a deranged guy who lost his kid and was out for blood.

The netizens bombarded Ethan with hate comments, blaming him for being the “crazy one.”

He did not need to think twice. He knew Rosalind was behind it all.

As she drove, she glanced at Ethan in the rearview mirror.

His hair was a mess, and his face was pale as a ghost. He looked nothing like his usual self.

She frowned at his pathetic state as she said, “What happened to you? You look terrible. I specifically told them to look after you.

“Stop obsessing over Nina and dragging this out. Look where it’s gotten you. Was it really worth it?”

Ethan closed his eyes. He could not be bothered to look at them or talk to them anymore.

He simply turned his head toward the window and stared out blankly.

Seeing him remain silent, Rosalind felt an inexplicable restlessness stir within her. She was irritated.

She instinctively turned her head, about to say something else.

Then, out of nowhere, blinding headlights washed over them. The deafening blast of a horn followed. A massive truck came charging straight at them.

The wedding took place a month later.Josephine wore a white wedding gown. Her hair was pinned up, revealing her slender neck.Ethan stood at the other end of the carpet. He was in a black tuxedo, and his bow tie was tied neatly and perfectly. As he watched her walk down the aisle, tears welled up in his eyes. Petals covered the carpet. She walked through the crowd of well-wishers, past smiles that reached their eyes and smiles that did not.Soon, she stopped in front of him. The pastor recited the vows in a solemn and gentle voice.“Ms. Josephine Shelby, do you take Mr. Ethan Carey to be your husband? Do you agree to love him, respect him, and protect him, in poverty and in wealth, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?”She looked into his eyes and said clearly, “I do.”The pastor turned to Ethan and paused for a moment.“Mr. Ethan Carey, do you take Ms. Josephine Shelby to be your wife? She had lost so much weight. Her black coat, which was once snug on her shoulders, hung loose and shapeless on her frame. The seams sagged at the shoulders. Her hair had grown longer and fell in messy strands across her forehead. At her temples, a few gray hairs had appeared. They looked at each other for a few seconds.Rosalind grew flustered under his gaze. Her lips parted, as if she wanted to say something, but no words came out.Ethan was the first to speak. “Are you done staring?”Rosalind froze.“Ethan!” She panicked and took a step forward to chase after him.He paused and turned to look at her. “What else do you want?”There was too much she wanted to say. Her words were stuck in her throat, and she could not force out a single one. After several seconds, she finally managed to utter a single line.“H-How are you?”He glanced at her. “What does that have to do with you?”She was stunned. Her lips trembled, and her face turned pale.He did not bother to wait

When Rosalind came out of the nightclub, it was still dark outside. The streetlights were still on, casting orange light across the empty road. No one was around. She stood by the curb. The cold breeze hit her, sobering her up considerably. A sharp pain twisted in her stomach. It hurt so much that she bent over and held onto a tree. She gagged for a while, but nothing came out.She straightened up and wiped her face with her hand. Finally, she hailed a cab.“Where to?” the driver asked. She was about to give the address of the villa, but the words caught in her throat. In the end, she said, “The cemetery.”The driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror. He did not ask any further questions and started driving. In front of Nina’s headstone lay a fresh bouquet of daisies.Dew still glistened on the petals. The flowers had clearly been placed there very recently. She crouched down and reached out to touch them. Her fingers met the cold petals, and a sharp ache pierced her

Rosalind spent five days in the hospital. She completed all the discharge procedures by herself. She walked out of the hospital alone. No one came to pick her up.She did not go home. That villa was too large and too empty. The moment she stepped through the door, she would see Nina’s photos, toys, and little blanket left on the couch. She could not bear it. So, she went to a bar instead. There, she drank from evening until dawn. She drank whiskey, vodka, brandy, or whatever was available. When the bartender refused to pour her another round, she slammed her hand on the counter and yelled. When that did not work, she reached over and grabbed the bottles herself. She soon felt a burning pain in her stomach, as if a hand was twisting and wringing her insides. She ignored it and kept drinking. ‘Might as well die from the pain,’ she thought. At 3 a.m., she vomited. The people around her screamed and scattered in fright. She looked down at the blood in her vomit and laughe

On the day Ethan got into a car accident, Josephine was not there. He went to the south side of the city to buy a bouquet of daisies for Nina. The driver was up front. Ethan sat in the back with his eyes closed. His mind was filled with images of Nina as a little girl. The light turned red, and the driver braked. Everything was normal. Then, a truck ran the red light and slammed into them from the side.A deafening crash followed. Glass shattered and metal twisted. The world flipped upside down. Ethan was thrown against the side of the car. His head hit the window, and everything went black. He thought he was going to die. Then, he heard a voice.“Ethan! Ethan! Wake up!”It was Rosalind. She appeared out of nowhere. The car door was crushed shut and would not budge. She slammed her elbow into the window until the glass gave way. Her skin was torn, and blood dripped out, but she did not seem to care how painful it was.She reached through the broken window and unlocked

After the black sedan pulled away from the square, Ethan remained silent for a long time.He leaned against the car window, drawing lazy circles on his knee without realizing it.Next to him, Josephine scrolled through her phone in silence. It was quiet for a long time. Then, Ethan said, “She used to be different.”Josephine’s fingers paused. He continued softly, “She used to be stubbornly proud. Even when she was trying to win me over, she wouldn’t say she liked me directly. She would make me guess.“At our wedding, when the officiant asked if she was willing to be my wife, she waited a long time before joking, ‘What else would I be doing here?’”He paused. Josephine set her phone aside and looked at him. His reflection in the window was faint, but she could still see the tears welling up in his eyes. She did not say anything more. Instead, she rolled down the window. The cool night breeze rushed in, sweeping away the heaviness that had filled the car.“Are you hungry?
