What the hell was that? My hand stayed pressed to my chest as I stared outside, trying to catch my breath. Where had all those birds come from? My heart still thumped like it was trying to escape my ribs. I shook my head, forcing myself to focus. I step back into the house carefully, my eyes scanning every corner. The first thing that caught me was the chandelier hanging in the main hall. It was Enormous. Crystal pieces fractured the dim light into tiny rainbows. Dust clung stubbornly to its edges, like it hadn’t been cleaned in years. On the far wall, a painting caught my attention making me stop. A white wolf stood beneath a full moon, its eyes glowing faintly, almost eerily, in the muted light. It sent a chill down my spine and yet I couldn’t look away. Then a sudden scream echoed from somewhere inside the house. I jumped, flinching, but shook it off…. it was probably just the old house settling. Dust filled my nose as I carefully skirted around a couch draped in white cloth, like a ghost frozen in time. I wandered into the kitchen and froze. It was massive…granite countertops, dark wood cabinets, space enough to host a small army. And yet… it felt cold. Empty. Silent. Curiosity pushed me upstairs. Seven bedrooms. Seven. I ran my hand along the polished railing, imagining the mansion in its prime, the secrets each room might hold. Back downstairs, the house felt different. Shadows stretched in corners, wooden floors groaned under my feet, and the grandeur of the place was marred by peeling paint, dusty windows, and creaking doors. I walked outside and dialed the number on the metal plate near the door, just like Cairos had said. The phone rang… once… twice… three times… four… “Welcome to Ravenmoor Helpdesk. How can I help you?” a cheerful voice answered. “Hi… um, sorry. I need someone to help me fix a house and do some maintenance,” I said, trying to keep my voice polite. “Where are you calling from?” the lady asked. “Blackthorn… Blackthorn Lane,” I replied. “Oh, stranger… it’s you!” she said, her voice bright. “Excuse me?” I asked, confused. “Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten me so soon… it’s me, Anna… the barista,” she said. “Oh… yeah I remember.. how could I forget?” I said rolling my eyes “I thought you ran a diner,” I said slowly, confused. “Yeah… I do, but I do a lot of things,” she replied with a laugh. “Oh… okay,” I said cautiously, shaking my head not caring to know more. “Can I get someone to come down here?” “Yeah, I’ll send someone in the next twenty to thirty minutes,” she said. “Thank you,” I said, hanging up before she could ask any more questions. Everything about her… about this town… even everyone here… still creeped me out. I waited for about thirty minutes, glancing at the clock on the wall. Why the hell are they taking so long? I muttered under my breath. Frustrated, I checked my phone. It was already 3 PM. My patience was wearing thin. Then I heard a vehicle outside. I rushed to the window and saw a truck pulling up. I stepped outside… and froze. There he was. Cairos. And three other boys were standing beside him. My heart skipped a beat. Why was he here? What does he want? “Do you need anything?” I asked, trying to sound calm, though I clearly was not comfortable with him being around.. especially after what he did to Anna “You called for a handyman,” he said simply. “And here I am.” “You’re the…?” I started, looking from him to the young men. They looked barely sixteen, maybe fifteen. “Do you have a problem?” he asked, eyes locked on mine, cold and sharp. “Nah… just surprised,” I said, folding my arms. “I thought you were… I don’t know… a security guard or something.” He ignored me completely. “Could you show us what you need help with?” he asked, his tone clipped. No room for arguing. I hesitated, then motioned toward the mansion. “Uh… yeah… everything. The house… It’s in bad shape. Needs cleaning, fixing… everything.” He nodded. The three boys moved silently behind him, their eyes following me as I led the way inside. I led them through the mansion, pointing out the things that needed fixing… peeling paint in the hallway, broken tiles in the kitchen, the chandelier that needed dusting and polishing. Now and then, I couldn’t help but look at the boys trailing behind Cairos. They were so young… far too young for this kind of work, for a life that had already been so hard. Seeing children forced to face this kind of struggle made my chest tighten. I could never hire kids .. I simply couldn’t bear to watch them endure so much pain. Finally, I stopped, my stomach tightening. “Before we go on…” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “…I’m not really okay with this.” I gestured toward the boys. “What…?” Cairos asked, his brow furrowed, confused. “I mean… I’m not one of those people who make a minor work. I can’t… I just can’t allow this,” I said firmly, my eyes fixed on them again. He looked at me, expression unreadable for a moment, then a small smile flickered across his lips… quickly gone. “They’re not minors,” he said finally. “What?” I asked, confused. “They’re not minors. This is Caleb, Dylan, Ethan… Caleb is twenty-five, Dylan is twenty-four, and Ethan, the youngest is twenty-one. So no need to worry,” he said calmly. I froze, staring at them. My mind refused to process it. How could they look that young…? “You might want to close your mouth now,” Cairos said suddenly, stepping closer. Before I could react, his hand moved up, covering my mouth. I froze, my eyes wide. “You’ll catch flies if you keep it open,” he murmured, almost teasing… but the dangerous edge in his voice made my chest tighten. I swallowed hard, nodding, too stunned to speak.ISOLDES POVMy breath came out shaky.“I don’t know how to control anything!” I snapped. “I just got here .. I don’t know what this is!”“That doesn’t matter,” Cairos said, steady, unshaken even with that thing right in front of him. “It’s already part of you.”“I didn’t sign up for this!”“No one does.”“Great!”The thing moved again. Not fast this time.Slow. Careful. It was studying me now instead of attacking. Its head tilted slightly.“…There you are,” it whispered.A chill ran down my spine.“What does that mean?” I asked, my voice smaller now.It didn’t answer me.Instead, it took one step closer. And the air between us warped.I felt it again— That pull. But different this time. Not dragging. Calling.Like it expected me to come to it.My body leaned forward slightly before I even realized it.“No—” I caught myself quickly, stepping back. “Nope. Not happening.”Cairos’ voice came low behind me. “Don’t resist it like that.”I turned to him sharply. “Which one do you want me to
ISOLDES POVMy breath came out uneven.I couldn’t look away. His eyes… They were the same. The same red I saw this morning. The same red I thought I imagined.Except now.. I wasn’t imagining anything.“…You lied,” I whispered.Cairos didn’t answer immediately. His gaze stayed locked on the thing on the stairs, his body tense, like he was holding something back.“I didn’t lie,” he said finally, voice low. “I just didn’t tell you everything.”“That’s the same thing!” I snapped, my heart racing. The thing laughed again.“She’s mad…mad at you…”“Shut up!” I yelled, my voice cracking now.My head was spinning.Nothing made sense anymore.Alara. The hospital. This town. Him.Everything felt like it was breaking apart at the same time.“Isolde,” Cairos said, sharper now. “Focus.”“Don’t tell me to focus!” I shot back. “You’ve been hiding things from me since I got here!”“And you haven’t?” he fired back instantly. That shut me up.For half a second.Because he was right. The thing took anoth
ISOLDES POVMy chest felt tight. Too tight.Like breathing was becoming go hard to do.“What is it?” I asked again, louder this time. “What the hell is that thing?!”Anna didn’t look at me. Her hands stayed raised, voice still moving through those strange words.Cairos answered instead.Low. Careful.“…It’s not supposed to have a form.”I blinked. “That’s your answer?!”“It means,” he continued, eyes fixed on the thing, “it’s using something it knows you’ll respond to.”My stomach twisted.Alara.Of course. The thing on the stairs smiled again…like it heard every thought in my head.“You miss me,” it said softly. My breath hitched.“No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “You’re not her.”It tilted its head slightly.“Then why did you call me?”I clenched my fists. “I didn’t call you!”“You did,” it said gently. “You always do.”A sharp crack split through the room again.Another stone at the base of the stairs fractured.Anna’s voice faltered for half a second. “Cairos—!”“I see it,” he
ISOLDES POVThe moment the words left my mouth, the air shifted again. Not just heavy this time…Like it was about devour everything in its way..The whisper from the stairs changed. It wasn’t soft anymore. It sharpened.Like it had heard me.Like it felt me.“Oh God…” I breathed, my chest tightening painfully.Cairos moved closer instantly, his voice low and urgent. “Don’t panic.”“I’m not panicking,” I said quickly. “I’m just… very aware that something up there wants me!”“Not helping,” Anna snapped, her voice rising as her hands moved faster, tracing symbols in the air.The runes flared brighter under our feet. The pull inside my chest intensified. It hurt now.Like something was tugging at a thread tied deep inside me, trying to pull it loose.I gasped softly, my body tensing. “It’s… it’s pulling harder—”“I know,” Cairos said, stepping even closer. His hand hovered near my arm like he wanted to grab me but was holding himself back. “Stay with me, Isolde. Focus on me.”I looked at
ISOLDES POVI froze“I WASN’T—” I stopped mid-sentence. “Actually, you know what? Never mind.”I exhaled sharply, forcing myself to focus on anything else. The floor. The symbols. Anna was humming softly in the background, as if this were completely normal. Then it was my turn.I hesitated. My hands hovered over my clothes.“This is ridiculous,” I muttered.“Just get it done,” Anna said without looking back.I clenched my jaw. “If I die, I’m haunting all of you.”No one answered.Great.I turned away from Cairo as much as I could and quickly started getting undressed, just trying to get it over with whatever this is.Top off. Jeans off. Fast. No thinking. My face stayed hot the entire time, as it had personally decided to betray me.I kept my focus anywhere but him, forcing my mind to behave. It didn’t really listen. Even my nipples stood hard and aroused.By the time I straightened up, I caught movement from the corner of my eye.I froze.Slowly, I turned my head.Cairo was looking a
ISOLDES POVAnna stood there clearly tired.“Enough,” she said sharply, clapping her hands once like she was ending a conversation. “I need you both to get naked so I can start the ritual.”The silence that followed was so heavy it felt like the house itself froze with us.I stared at her. “…What?”“Naked,” she repeated calmly, like she was asking us to move furniture. My brain lagged behind my ears. “Like… clothes off naked?”“Yes,” Anna said. “Butt naked.”I froze completely. For a second, I actually wondered if I’d blacked out and entered some alternate version of reality where this was normal.“I’m not getting naked with him,” I said immediately, pointing at Cairos without looking at him. My face burned hot. “Absolutely not. No. That’s insane.”Anna sighed like I was the difficult one here. “It’s not what you think.”“It is EXACTLY what I think,” I shot back. “I just got told I’m possibly being hunted by invisible things and now you want me to undress in front of the man who keeps

ISOLDE POVI stood there long after the door closed behind him.Silence filled the mansion again, heavy and unsettling. My heart was still racing. My mind wasn’t catching up.Living together?? He gave this house to Alara?None of it made sense. Nothing about this man made sense.I dragged a hand th
ISOLDE POVI swallowed hard, my fingers tightening by side.“Spanish?” I frowned, looking at him. “What do you mean Spanish? Why would I say the password in Spanish?”He dragged a hand down his face and let out a long, tired sigh, like I was testing the last bit of his patience.“Español,” he said
ISOLDE POV“Who are you,” he said slowly, his voice low and dangerous, “and why are you asking for Blackthorn Lane?”I just stared at him, swallowing hard. I couldn’t let him see how much I hated him. How much fear and anger churned in me.I forced myself to stand, forcing a smile that felt unnatur
