The restaurant was filled with the clamor of overlapping conversations and the clinking of plates and cutlery, yet everything faded into a distant blur.

The man still chatted with a regular at the next table while he complained about how exhausting his life had become.

“Man, I swear, I was born to work myself to death.”

“Ever since Sophia took over this place, I’ve been stuck here with her. I have to keep an eye on the restaurant every single day. It’s more exhausting than having a regular job.”

He complained about how tired he was, yet he could not hide the smug smile spreading across his face. He practically basked in his own happiness.

My fingernails dug into my palms. The sharp sting of pain brought me back to my senses.

I reminded myself that I could not act rashly.

I forced a stiff smile onto my face, pulled out the chair beside me, and sat down.

“Business is booming, huh? I deliver supplies to restaurants around the neighborhood. I saw how busy your place was, so I thought I’d stop by and see if there might be a chance for us to work together.”

He gave me a quick once-over. He apparently did not suspect anything, and he replied, “Sure. Just leave your catalog over there. My wife can take a look when she gets back.”

There it was again, mentioning his wife.

After he said that, he pointed toward the little boy playing with his Transformers toy a short distance away. Pride filled his face.

“See that kid? That’s my oldest boy, Zach. He’s four. He just started preschool, and his teacher can’t stop praising him. Says he’s smart and much more well-behaved than the other kids.”

The boy must have heard his name because he dropped his toy and scampered over on his little legs. He wrapped his arms around Austin’s thigh.

“Daddy!”

That single word rang out bright and clear, yet it pierced through me like a knife. My chest tightened until I could barely breathe.

I thought about myself and how desperately I had once wanted a child of my own.

However, Sophia always said, “Leonard, look at where we are right now. We’re drowning in debt. How could we possibly afford to raise a child? Let’s wait until things get better.”

I believed her. I thought she only wanted to protect the little family we were supposed to build together.

So it was not that she did not want a child. She simply did not want one with me.

The regular at the next table chimed in again and teased Austin. “You should count your blessings, man. Sophia spoils you rotten. Just look at that soft, pampered face of yours. When was the last time she let you lift a finger for any of the heavy work around here?”

“You bet she does. My wife can’t live without me. She’s always saying she doesn’t know what she’d do if I weren’t around,” Austin replied as he lifted his chin smugly.

‘Can’t live without him?’

My mind flashed back to the construction sites overseas.

To earn every last dollar I could, I spent 16 hours a day hauling bags of cement. The skin on my shoulders had been rubbed raw until the flesh was exposed. Sweat seeped into the open wounds, and each drop burned like fire.

Once, I went 3 days and 3 nights without sleep. I nearly fell off the scaffolding from sheer exhaustion.

The contrast felt so cruel that it seemed as though an invisible hand twisted a knife in my chest.

What had I sacrificed my life for over those past 5 years?

I abandoned my home and everything familiar to provide for her. Meanwhile, back home, she used my money to support another man and his child, and now she expected their second.

It felt ridiculous. It all felt so ridiculous.

Five years ago, on the morning I left for the airport, Sophia clung to me and sobbed so hard she could barely catch her breath.

“Leonard, you have to come home soon. I’m scared of being here all by myself. Don’t worry about the debts. I’ll take care of things at home. Just look after yourself.”

I wondered if those tears had been real.

“Hey, have some water. You don’t look too good. Are you feeling worn out?”

Austin’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. He held out a glass of water with an easy, welcoming smile.

I took it mechanically, yet I did not drink.

My gaze drifted past him to the center of the wall behind the cash register.

A large framed family portrait hung there. In the photograph, Sophia wore a gentle smile. Austin held Zach in his arms, and his face glowed with happiness.

The three of them nestled close together and looked like a perfect family.

That was a family. I wondered what I was.

A bitter, metallic taste rose in my throat as my stomach churned. The truth was, I had been a fool all along.

A few months later, the court delivered its verdict.Sophia was convicted of bigamy, fraud, embezzlement, and several other offenses. She was sentenced to twenty years in prison, stripped of her civil rights for life and ordered to forfeit all her personal assets.Austin, convicted as an accomplice for bigamy and profiting from the illegal scheme, received an eight-year prison sentence. The Chase family was also forced to surrender all their ill-gotten gains. Overnight, they went from the envy of everyone around them, the respectable city folk, back to what they had once been, indebted farmers from the countryside. With their tails between their legs, they left the city.At last, everything had been settled. Before Sophia was transferred to prison, she requested one final visit with me.Separated by a thick pane of bulletproof glass, she sat in her prison uniform. Her face looked gaunt and haggard. The charm she once possessed had vanished.“Leonard.” She picked up the phone, an

Sophia passing out did not earn her a single ounce of sympathy. She came to a few moments later, and the first thing she did was scramble toward me on her hands and knees. She tried to grab my leg in desperation.“Honey! I was wrong! I swear, I was wrong!”She sobbed so hard that tears and snot ran down her face. The arrogance she showed moments earlier had vanished completely.“Please, think about everything we went through together. Think about how much I suffered for you. Please, just give me one more chance.”I stepped back in disgust. Two bodyguards in black suits immediately stepped forward and held her back, keeping her from getting anywhere near me.I looked down at her, my gaze cold as ice.“Everything we went through? The moment you took the money I sent to save my mother’s life and used it to set up a business for your side piece, whatever we had between us died. All that is left now is hate.“Every last cent you spent? I will make sure you pay it all back tenfold,

At the front of the group stood a middle-aged man wearing gold-rimmed glasses. He walked up to me, stopped, and bowed at a perfect ninety-degree angle.“Mr. Ashdown, our apologies for keeping you waiting.”The black-suited professionals behind him bowed in unison. Their movements were perfectly synchronized, and their presence was overwhelming. The smile on Sophia’s face finally froze completely. She stared at the scene that looked like something out of a movie. Her face turned pale white, yet she still tried to hold her ground.“Leonard, well done… How much did you pay for all these extras? A few hundred dollars? I have to admit, they’re pretty convincing.”The lead attorney slowly straightened up and adjusted his glasses. He did not spare Sophia a single glance. He took a leather cardholder from inside his jacket, opened it, and displayed a gold-embossed identification card.“Jonathan Howard, senior partner at Grandall Law Firm. The people behind me are my legal team. We hand

“Shut your mouth.”My sharp command cut through the noise. My voice was not loud, yet there was an unmistakable authority in it.Zach, who had been throwing a tantrum on the floor, froze in shock. Even his crying stopped short. The entire restaurant fell silent. Every eye turned toward me.Something about me had changed. I no longer looked like an ordinary delivery guy.I raised my phone, zoomed in on a clear screenshot of a bank transfer record, and shoved it in front of Austin’s parents.“Open your eyes and look. Three years ago, on June 12, a payment of 200,000 dollars was transferred from my overseas account, through Sophia, into an account belonging to a man named William Chase.”I pointed to the name printed on the statement, then turned to Austin’s father, whose face had gone deathly pale.“William Chase. That is you, isn’t it? That money was used to buy your son’s BMW, wasn’t it?”All the bluster drained out of Austin’s parents in an instant. They stood there with thei

“What did you just say?”Austin was startled for a moment. He grabbed Sophia by the shoulders, and his eyes turned bloodshot as he roared at her.“Is it true? Sophia. Answer me, damn it.”Sophia trembled violently. In the very next second, she burst into tears and threw herself into Austin’s arms.“Honey, don’t listen to him. He’s a fucking lunatic. He used to hit me and abuse me. I barely managed to escape him, and now he’s come after me again.”She sobbed hysterically, as though she had suffered some unimaginable injustice. It felt like a performance. If I had not lived through it myself, I might have believed her.Still crying, Sophia lifted her head from Austin’s chest and shot me a look filled with contempt.“Leonard, I’m warning you. You can throw all the tantrums you want, but you’re not getting a dime out of me. Whatever gambling debts you racked up overseas are your problem, not mine. Everything I have now, I earned with my own two hands.”“Your hands?” I let out a c

The smile on Sophia’s face froze the instant she recognized me.Austin, completely unaware, reached for the bag of sour tangerines in her hand and intended to peel one for her.“Babe, go sit down and rest. I’ll peel them for you.”Thud.The bag of tangerines slipped from her hands and hit the floor. The fruit scattered and rolled in every direction.Sophia’s face turned even paler than the tangerines lying at her feet.Austin finally sensed that something was wrong. He caught Sophia as she swayed unsteadily, then followed her gaze to me with a bewildered expression.“Babe, what’s wrong?”He turned to me and forced a polite smile.“Sorry. My wife’s pregnant, so her emotions have been all over the place. Let me introduce you. This is my wife, Sophia.”I ignored him.I rose from my chair and walked toward Sophia, one slow step at a time. I stopped right in front of her and looked at the woman who felt both familiar and foreign to me.Her whole body trembled. Her lips quivered,
