Chapter 2

Author: Enlightened
The restaurant door swung open.

A middle-aged couple in their fifties walked in with warm smiles on their faces.

“Austin, hard at work in the restaurant again?”

“Mom, Dad? What brings you here?” Austin immediately went over to greet them.

“We brought you some soup.”

The woman set the insulated container on the table and took Austin’s hand. She examined him as though he were her most precious treasure.

“Just look at you. You lost even more weight. I told Sophia not to make you work so hard.”

Her husband added, “Sophia is too thoughtful. She bought us imported health supplements yesterday, too. What a waste of money.”

The woman nodded in agreement, then her voice softened with sympathy. “Sophia had such a hard life before. She married the wrong man and suffered terribly at the hands of that gambling-addict ex-husband of hers.”

Gambling addict? Ex-husband?

My hand jerked around the glass of water. Warm water spilled across the back of my hand, yet I felt nothing.

So this was what I had become in the eyes of their entire family. I had become a worthless man who abandoned his wife and child, a degenerate who could not stay away from gambling.

Austin’s mother continued to chatter. “Thankfully, those miserable days are behind her. Now that she is with our Austin, she can finally enjoy a proper life.”

As I listened to his parents praise him, Austin looked pleased, yet he pretended to be modest.

“Mom, that is all in the past. Let’s not bring it up.”

I watched their happy little family gathered together. Zach nestled in his grandmother’s arms while she covered him with kisses.

I stood there like an invisible stranger who had no place among them.

I needed to know more. I took a deep breath and forced myself to regain my composure.

I offered Austin a cigarette and acted as though we were simply shooting the breeze.

“Boss, you have a lovely family here. You and your wife have been married for a long time?”

Austin accepted the cigarette and lit it without hesitation. He took a drag before he answered, “Four years, maybe a little more. By the time I met Sophia, she had just finalized her divorce. She had a pretty rough time of it, all on her own.”

Four years. The date hit me like a thunderclap.

Back then, I had only just arrived overseas. I worked day and night and barely stopped to catch my breath. When I finally saved up my first substantial sum for our future, I wired every cent of it to Sophia immediately.

I remembered that day clearly. I even called her to let her know the money had come through and told her to use it to pay off our debts first.

She cried and said over the phone, “Honey, you’ve worked so hard.”

Austin’s father, William Chase, who had been listening, could not resist joining in to boast about his daughter-in-law.

“You can say that again. Sophia is one capable woman. She bought this entire restaurant outright with the money she secretly saved up herself. Did not make Austin lift a finger.”

A deafening roar went off inside my head. I wondered where Sophia had gotten that kind of money.

When we got married, I knew her family’s circumstances inside and out. Her parents were ordinary factory workers, and her own salary barely amounted to anything.

Now, at last, I understood.

My money had become the foundation of her new life. It funded the restaurant that now belonged to the two of them.

Everything I sacrificed became the bedrock of their comfortable little existence.

A violent cramp seized my stomach. The pain was so intense I could barely straighten my back.

Austin still basked in his own good fortune. He raised his wrist and showed off the gleaming watch he wore.

“Hey, what do you think of this watch?”

“Sophia gave it to me for our wedding anniversary last year. It cost over 50,000 dollars.”

It felt like a cruel joke.

Last year, I spent an entire month trapped in a lightless underground mine. I worked around the clock to earn a 50,000-dollar bonus for finishing a job ahead of schedule.

By the time I finally came out, I felt as though I had shed an entire layer of skin. The sunlight was so harsh that my eyes streamed with tears.

Back then, I actually felt happy. I thought Sophia would have a little less to worry about with the extra money.

A few months later, the court delivered its verdict.Sophia was convicted of bigamy, fraud, embezzlement, and several other offenses. She was sentenced to twenty years in prison, stripped of her civil rights for life and ordered to forfeit all her personal assets.Austin, convicted as an accomplice for bigamy and profiting from the illegal scheme, received an eight-year prison sentence. The Chase family was also forced to surrender all their ill-gotten gains. Overnight, they went from the envy of everyone around them, the respectable city folk, back to what they had once been, indebted farmers from the countryside. With their tails between their legs, they left the city.At last, everything had been settled. Before Sophia was transferred to prison, she requested one final visit with me.Separated by a thick pane of bulletproof glass, she sat in her prison uniform. Her face looked gaunt and haggard. The charm she once possessed had vanished.“Leonard.” She picked up the phone, an

Sophia passing out did not earn her a single ounce of sympathy. She came to a few moments later, and the first thing she did was scramble toward me on her hands and knees. She tried to grab my leg in desperation.“Honey! I was wrong! I swear, I was wrong!”She sobbed so hard that tears and snot ran down her face. The arrogance she showed moments earlier had vanished completely.“Please, think about everything we went through together. Think about how much I suffered for you. Please, just give me one more chance.”I stepped back in disgust. Two bodyguards in black suits immediately stepped forward and held her back, keeping her from getting anywhere near me.I looked down at her, my gaze cold as ice.“Everything we went through? The moment you took the money I sent to save my mother’s life and used it to set up a business for your side piece, whatever we had between us died. All that is left now is hate.“Every last cent you spent? I will make sure you pay it all back tenfold,

At the front of the group stood a middle-aged man wearing gold-rimmed glasses. He walked up to me, stopped, and bowed at a perfect ninety-degree angle.“Mr. Ashdown, our apologies for keeping you waiting.”The black-suited professionals behind him bowed in unison. Their movements were perfectly synchronized, and their presence was overwhelming. The smile on Sophia’s face finally froze completely. She stared at the scene that looked like something out of a movie. Her face turned pale white, yet she still tried to hold her ground.“Leonard, well done… How much did you pay for all these extras? A few hundred dollars? I have to admit, they’re pretty convincing.”The lead attorney slowly straightened up and adjusted his glasses. He did not spare Sophia a single glance. He took a leather cardholder from inside his jacket, opened it, and displayed a gold-embossed identification card.“Jonathan Howard, senior partner at Grandall Law Firm. The people behind me are my legal team. We hand

“Shut your mouth.”My sharp command cut through the noise. My voice was not loud, yet there was an unmistakable authority in it.Zach, who had been throwing a tantrum on the floor, froze in shock. Even his crying stopped short. The entire restaurant fell silent. Every eye turned toward me.Something about me had changed. I no longer looked like an ordinary delivery guy.I raised my phone, zoomed in on a clear screenshot of a bank transfer record, and shoved it in front of Austin’s parents.“Open your eyes and look. Three years ago, on June 12, a payment of 200,000 dollars was transferred from my overseas account, through Sophia, into an account belonging to a man named William Chase.”I pointed to the name printed on the statement, then turned to Austin’s father, whose face had gone deathly pale.“William Chase. That is you, isn’t it? That money was used to buy your son’s BMW, wasn’t it?”All the bluster drained out of Austin’s parents in an instant. They stood there with thei

“What did you just say?”Austin was startled for a moment. He grabbed Sophia by the shoulders, and his eyes turned bloodshot as he roared at her.“Is it true? Sophia. Answer me, damn it.”Sophia trembled violently. In the very next second, she burst into tears and threw herself into Austin’s arms.“Honey, don’t listen to him. He’s a fucking lunatic. He used to hit me and abuse me. I barely managed to escape him, and now he’s come after me again.”She sobbed hysterically, as though she had suffered some unimaginable injustice. It felt like a performance. If I had not lived through it myself, I might have believed her.Still crying, Sophia lifted her head from Austin’s chest and shot me a look filled with contempt.“Leonard, I’m warning you. You can throw all the tantrums you want, but you’re not getting a dime out of me. Whatever gambling debts you racked up overseas are your problem, not mine. Everything I have now, I earned with my own two hands.”“Your hands?” I let out a c

The smile on Sophia’s face froze the instant she recognized me.Austin, completely unaware, reached for the bag of sour tangerines in her hand and intended to peel one for her.“Babe, go sit down and rest. I’ll peel them for you.”Thud.The bag of tangerines slipped from her hands and hit the floor. The fruit scattered and rolled in every direction.Sophia’s face turned even paler than the tangerines lying at her feet.Austin finally sensed that something was wrong. He caught Sophia as she swayed unsteadily, then followed her gaze to me with a bewildered expression.“Babe, what’s wrong?”He turned to me and forced a polite smile.“Sorry. My wife’s pregnant, so her emotions have been all over the place. Let me introduce you. This is my wife, Sophia.”I ignored him.I rose from my chair and walked toward Sophia, one slow step at a time. I stopped right in front of her and looked at the woman who felt both familiar and foreign to me.Her whole body trembled. Her lips quivered,
