Chapter 3

Author: Enlightened
I steadied myself against the table and forced an expression of admiration onto my face.

“Boss, this place must’ve cost you a fortune to set up. And if your wife’s ex-husband was a gambling addict, didn’t she have debts of her own to deal with back then?”

There was one last thing I needed to confirm.

The moment Austin heard my question, he burst out laughing as though I had told the funniest joke in the world.

“Man, are you kidding me? My wife comes from a pretty well-off family. They’re not filthy rich or anything, but they’ve never been short on money. Why would she have any debts?”

Behind him, his mother, Victoria, immediately chimed in with a proud smile.

“Exactly. Sophia’s parents always spoiled their daughter. When she got married the first time, they even helped pay the down payment on her marital home.”

I felt as though my entire world collapsed.

The massive debt that kept me drowning for five long years had been nothing more than an elaborate trap, designed specifically for me from the very beginning.

The whole point had been to squeeze every last bit of value out of me, then find a perfectly legitimate excuse to kick me out of her life.

At last, everything made sense.

That was why Sophia had been so adamant about supporting my decision to work overseas when I hesitated all those years ago.

Also, that was why every time I told her how much I missed home and wanted to return early, she came up with one excuse after another to convince me to stay.

She had already secured her own way out long before I ever left.

Just then, Zach came running over again and tugged playfully at Austin’s pant leg.

“Daddy, my birthday’s coming up soon. Can you buy me that giant Ultraman toy I showed you last time?”

Austin agreed without a moment’s hesitation. “Of course. You name it, and Daddy will buy it for you.”

The question slipped out before I could stop myself. “Hey, buddy, when’s your birthday?”

Austin smiled and answered for his son. “November eleventh.”

November eleventh. It was the anniversary of my mother’s death.

I could never forget that day for as long as I lived.

My mother suffered a sudden heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. The doctors told me that if the money arrived in time, they could operate immediately and save her life.

I called Sophia like a madman at that time. Hundreds of calls, over an entire day and night. Yet not a single one was answered.

In the end, my mother missed the critical window for treatment and died on the operating table.

Back then, I assumed Sophia had been too busy dealing with debt collectors to answer her phone.

I even tried to console myself and told myself it was not her fault.

Yet the truth was, she had not been dealing with a single debt collector that day. She was in a hospital, giving birth to another man’s child.

It was her. Sophia had been the one who snuffed out my mother’s last chance at survival with her own hands.

A wave of hatred surged up from the depths of my heart. My eyes burned red, and I could barely keep myself from losing control.

I hated my own stupidity. I hated the blind trust I placed in her. Most of all, I hated that I worked myself half to death overseas for a lie, only to be denied the chance to see my mother one last time.

My chest heaved. The back of my throat tasted like rust.

A kitchen worker showed up carrying several dishes.

“Boss, dinner’s ready.”

There were sweet-and-sour pork ribs, braised carp, and a steaming pot of chicken soup.

It was a lavish spread.

The Chase family eagerly gathered around the table and prepared to eat.

Austin waved me over with an air of generosity. “Hey, you haven’t eaten yet, have you? Don’t be shy. Come join us. You’ve got to try our chef’s cooking.”

He gestured proudly toward the food. “We always eat well in this family. Sophia says a man who works hard out there deserves good food and a full stomach.”

I stared at the feast before me. The nausea I had been fighting finally overwhelmed me, and I gagged.

I remembered the sour, rancid smell of cheap bread gone moldy overseas.

I traded my blood, sweat, and flesh for their life of luxury. Now they invited me to share a bite as though they tossed a scrap to a beggar.

I looked Austin straight in the eye and forced the words through clenched teeth.

“No. I couldn’t stomach a bite.”

A few months later, the court delivered its verdict.Sophia was convicted of bigamy, fraud, embezzlement, and several other offenses. She was sentenced to twenty years in prison, stripped of her civil rights for life and ordered to forfeit all her personal assets.Austin, convicted as an accomplice for bigamy and profiting from the illegal scheme, received an eight-year prison sentence. The Chase family was also forced to surrender all their ill-gotten gains. Overnight, they went from the envy of everyone around them, the respectable city folk, back to what they had once been, indebted farmers from the countryside. With their tails between their legs, they left the city.At last, everything had been settled. Before Sophia was transferred to prison, she requested one final visit with me.Separated by a thick pane of bulletproof glass, she sat in her prison uniform. Her face looked gaunt and haggard. The charm she once possessed had vanished.“Leonard.” She picked up the phone, an

Sophia passing out did not earn her a single ounce of sympathy. She came to a few moments later, and the first thing she did was scramble toward me on her hands and knees. She tried to grab my leg in desperation.“Honey! I was wrong! I swear, I was wrong!”She sobbed so hard that tears and snot ran down her face. The arrogance she showed moments earlier had vanished completely.“Please, think about everything we went through together. Think about how much I suffered for you. Please, just give me one more chance.”I stepped back in disgust. Two bodyguards in black suits immediately stepped forward and held her back, keeping her from getting anywhere near me.I looked down at her, my gaze cold as ice.“Everything we went through? The moment you took the money I sent to save my mother’s life and used it to set up a business for your side piece, whatever we had between us died. All that is left now is hate.“Every last cent you spent? I will make sure you pay it all back tenfold,

At the front of the group stood a middle-aged man wearing gold-rimmed glasses. He walked up to me, stopped, and bowed at a perfect ninety-degree angle.“Mr. Ashdown, our apologies for keeping you waiting.”The black-suited professionals behind him bowed in unison. Their movements were perfectly synchronized, and their presence was overwhelming. The smile on Sophia’s face finally froze completely. She stared at the scene that looked like something out of a movie. Her face turned pale white, yet she still tried to hold her ground.“Leonard, well done… How much did you pay for all these extras? A few hundred dollars? I have to admit, they’re pretty convincing.”The lead attorney slowly straightened up and adjusted his glasses. He did not spare Sophia a single glance. He took a leather cardholder from inside his jacket, opened it, and displayed a gold-embossed identification card.“Jonathan Howard, senior partner at Grandall Law Firm. The people behind me are my legal team. We hand

“Shut your mouth.”My sharp command cut through the noise. My voice was not loud, yet there was an unmistakable authority in it.Zach, who had been throwing a tantrum on the floor, froze in shock. Even his crying stopped short. The entire restaurant fell silent. Every eye turned toward me.Something about me had changed. I no longer looked like an ordinary delivery guy.I raised my phone, zoomed in on a clear screenshot of a bank transfer record, and shoved it in front of Austin’s parents.“Open your eyes and look. Three years ago, on June 12, a payment of 200,000 dollars was transferred from my overseas account, through Sophia, into an account belonging to a man named William Chase.”I pointed to the name printed on the statement, then turned to Austin’s father, whose face had gone deathly pale.“William Chase. That is you, isn’t it? That money was used to buy your son’s BMW, wasn’t it?”All the bluster drained out of Austin’s parents in an instant. They stood there with thei

“What did you just say?”Austin was startled for a moment. He grabbed Sophia by the shoulders, and his eyes turned bloodshot as he roared at her.“Is it true? Sophia. Answer me, damn it.”Sophia trembled violently. In the very next second, she burst into tears and threw herself into Austin’s arms.“Honey, don’t listen to him. He’s a fucking lunatic. He used to hit me and abuse me. I barely managed to escape him, and now he’s come after me again.”She sobbed hysterically, as though she had suffered some unimaginable injustice. It felt like a performance. If I had not lived through it myself, I might have believed her.Still crying, Sophia lifted her head from Austin’s chest and shot me a look filled with contempt.“Leonard, I’m warning you. You can throw all the tantrums you want, but you’re not getting a dime out of me. Whatever gambling debts you racked up overseas are your problem, not mine. Everything I have now, I earned with my own two hands.”“Your hands?” I let out a c

The smile on Sophia’s face froze the instant she recognized me.Austin, completely unaware, reached for the bag of sour tangerines in her hand and intended to peel one for her.“Babe, go sit down and rest. I’ll peel them for you.”Thud.The bag of tangerines slipped from her hands and hit the floor. The fruit scattered and rolled in every direction.Sophia’s face turned even paler than the tangerines lying at her feet.Austin finally sensed that something was wrong. He caught Sophia as she swayed unsteadily, then followed her gaze to me with a bewildered expression.“Babe, what’s wrong?”He turned to me and forced a polite smile.“Sorry. My wife’s pregnant, so her emotions have been all over the place. Let me introduce you. This is my wife, Sophia.”I ignored him.I rose from my chair and walked toward Sophia, one slow step at a time. I stopped right in front of her and looked at the woman who felt both familiar and foreign to me.Her whole body trembled. Her lips quivered,
