Chapter 4

Author: Enlightened
Austin’s phone rang on the table and broke the silence.

The word flashed across the screen: [Honey]

Austin seemed so accustomed to the call that he did not even glance at me before he tapped the speakerphone button.

The moment the call connected, Sophia’s syrupy voice filled the room.

“Honeyyy…” She drew out the last syllable in a singsong whine, sounding like a woman trying to coax her husband.

“I feel awful. My belly feels so heavy, and my whole body aches.”

Austin’s voice softened instantly. “Is the baby kicking you again?”

“Mmm…” Sophia murmured on the other end. “I’ll be home soon.”

“Come on, get over here and eat. I’ll feed you when we’re done.”

“Okay, I’ll be right there. Love you, honey.”

The call ended. Throughout the entire conversation, Austin made no effort to hide the tenderness and happiness written across his face.

My own phone vibrated in my pocket the very next second.

I pulled it out without changing my expression.

A text from Sophia glowed on the screen: [What’s going on with you this month? You’re still short by 20,000 dollars! If the money isn’t here by next week, the debt collectors will be showing up at my mom’s door! You’d better figure this out yourself!]

The same woman had spoken to two different men in two completely different ways, all within the span of a single minute.

To one, she acted like a loving, affectionate wife. To the other, she acted like a coldhearted debt collector.

As I stared at the message, written like a demand for overdue payment, whatever lingering attachment I still had to the past finally died.

I opened another chat.

It belonged to the head of a well-known law firm back home, someone I contacted well in advance.

My original plan had been to use my lottery winnings to hire his team to untangle Sophia’s family debts, then bring her home in grand fashion and give her the surprise of a lifetime.

Now, that plan needed a few adjustments.

My fingers flew across the screen as I typed a single message: [Change of plans. Within thirty minutes, I want a complete breakdown of all assets and financial transactions under Sophia Levine’s name, Austin Chase’s name, and the names of both his parents.]

The message was sent.

Beside me, Austin still wagged his head and dispensed unsolicited wisdom about life.

“Listen, every man needs a family. Look at my wife. She had such a hard time when she was on her own. Her deadbeat ex-husband was always giving her trouble. Ever since she got together with me, her life’s been so much better.”

He looked at me with the pitying eyes of a man who thought he had everything figured out.

I put my phone away and slowly raised my head. I met his gaze with absolute calm. There was not a trace of warmth left in my eyes.

There was nothing more to say to a pathetic clown who was about to watch his entire world come crashing down.

Soon enough, he would learn who the real deadbeat was and who would be the one hounding him for the rest of his life.

The restaurant’s glass sliding door suddenly shoved open with a loud rattle.

In the warm afternoon sunlight, a familiar figure stepped inside.

Sophia rested one hand on her heavily pregnant belly with a contented smile on her face. Her eyes swept across the restaurant as she searched for her beloved husband.

Her gaze met mine, and neither of us looked away.

A few months later, the court delivered its verdict.Sophia was convicted of bigamy, fraud, embezzlement, and several other offenses. She was sentenced to twenty years in prison, stripped of her civil rights for life and ordered to forfeit all her personal assets.Austin, convicted as an accomplice for bigamy and profiting from the illegal scheme, received an eight-year prison sentence. The Chase family was also forced to surrender all their ill-gotten gains. Overnight, they went from the envy of everyone around them, the respectable city folk, back to what they had once been, indebted farmers from the countryside. With their tails between their legs, they left the city.At last, everything had been settled. Before Sophia was transferred to prison, she requested one final visit with me.Separated by a thick pane of bulletproof glass, she sat in her prison uniform. Her face looked gaunt and haggard. The charm she once possessed had vanished.“Leonard.” She picked up the phone, an

Sophia passing out did not earn her a single ounce of sympathy. She came to a few moments later, and the first thing she did was scramble toward me on her hands and knees. She tried to grab my leg in desperation.“Honey! I was wrong! I swear, I was wrong!”She sobbed so hard that tears and snot ran down her face. The arrogance she showed moments earlier had vanished completely.“Please, think about everything we went through together. Think about how much I suffered for you. Please, just give me one more chance.”I stepped back in disgust. Two bodyguards in black suits immediately stepped forward and held her back, keeping her from getting anywhere near me.I looked down at her, my gaze cold as ice.“Everything we went through? The moment you took the money I sent to save my mother’s life and used it to set up a business for your side piece, whatever we had between us died. All that is left now is hate.“Every last cent you spent? I will make sure you pay it all back tenfold,

At the front of the group stood a middle-aged man wearing gold-rimmed glasses. He walked up to me, stopped, and bowed at a perfect ninety-degree angle.“Mr. Ashdown, our apologies for keeping you waiting.”The black-suited professionals behind him bowed in unison. Their movements were perfectly synchronized, and their presence was overwhelming. The smile on Sophia’s face finally froze completely. She stared at the scene that looked like something out of a movie. Her face turned pale white, yet she still tried to hold her ground.“Leonard, well done… How much did you pay for all these extras? A few hundred dollars? I have to admit, they’re pretty convincing.”The lead attorney slowly straightened up and adjusted his glasses. He did not spare Sophia a single glance. He took a leather cardholder from inside his jacket, opened it, and displayed a gold-embossed identification card.“Jonathan Howard, senior partner at Grandall Law Firm. The people behind me are my legal team. We hand

“Shut your mouth.”My sharp command cut through the noise. My voice was not loud, yet there was an unmistakable authority in it.Zach, who had been throwing a tantrum on the floor, froze in shock. Even his crying stopped short. The entire restaurant fell silent. Every eye turned toward me.Something about me had changed. I no longer looked like an ordinary delivery guy.I raised my phone, zoomed in on a clear screenshot of a bank transfer record, and shoved it in front of Austin’s parents.“Open your eyes and look. Three years ago, on June 12, a payment of 200,000 dollars was transferred from my overseas account, through Sophia, into an account belonging to a man named William Chase.”I pointed to the name printed on the statement, then turned to Austin’s father, whose face had gone deathly pale.“William Chase. That is you, isn’t it? That money was used to buy your son’s BMW, wasn’t it?”All the bluster drained out of Austin’s parents in an instant. They stood there with thei

“What did you just say?”Austin was startled for a moment. He grabbed Sophia by the shoulders, and his eyes turned bloodshot as he roared at her.“Is it true? Sophia. Answer me, damn it.”Sophia trembled violently. In the very next second, she burst into tears and threw herself into Austin’s arms.“Honey, don’t listen to him. He’s a fucking lunatic. He used to hit me and abuse me. I barely managed to escape him, and now he’s come after me again.”She sobbed hysterically, as though she had suffered some unimaginable injustice. It felt like a performance. If I had not lived through it myself, I might have believed her.Still crying, Sophia lifted her head from Austin’s chest and shot me a look filled with contempt.“Leonard, I’m warning you. You can throw all the tantrums you want, but you’re not getting a dime out of me. Whatever gambling debts you racked up overseas are your problem, not mine. Everything I have now, I earned with my own two hands.”“Your hands?” I let out a c

The smile on Sophia’s face froze the instant she recognized me.Austin, completely unaware, reached for the bag of sour tangerines in her hand and intended to peel one for her.“Babe, go sit down and rest. I’ll peel them for you.”Thud.The bag of tangerines slipped from her hands and hit the floor. The fruit scattered and rolled in every direction.Sophia’s face turned even paler than the tangerines lying at her feet.Austin finally sensed that something was wrong. He caught Sophia as she swayed unsteadily, then followed her gaze to me with a bewildered expression.“Babe, what’s wrong?”He turned to me and forced a polite smile.“Sorry. My wife’s pregnant, so her emotions have been all over the place. Let me introduce you. This is my wife, Sophia.”I ignored him.I rose from my chair and walked toward Sophia, one slow step at a time. I stopped right in front of her and looked at the woman who felt both familiar and foreign to me.Her whole body trembled. Her lips quivered,
