Chapter 5

Author: Sweet Tea Nini
I had a week to handle the handover before I could officially leave.

I decisively booked a one-week stay at a hotel near the company.

After news of our breakup spread, I felt like my colleagues were gradually regarding me in a different light.

Maybe because they actually thought I was dead weight who had gotten in through some connections, they began targeting me.

They pushed trivial tasks like photocopying documents and making coffee onto me.

Jade knew the actual reason behind my resignation, so she would speak up for me whenever she saw someone mistreating me.

However, the rumors were getting out of hand.

Some even said that I broke up with Katherine because I managed to win Jade over and was depending on her instead.

They didn't care that Jade was already married and that she truly cared about every one of her colleagues.

People were ostracizing me even more than before.

But Katherine never spoke up for me.

She might not have noticed, or she could be letting this happen as punishment for my insolence.

But three days later, Katherine had a foul look on her face as she slammed a document onto my desk. "Victor, what kind of a proposal is this? This is a total mess!"

Puzzled, I flipped through the proposal only to find out that I was listed as the Project Lead.

But I was leaving the company soon, and I didn't take on any new projects.

I was about to say something when Mark slid in between us with an apologetic look on his face. "Katherine, it's not Victor's fault. I'm the one to blame."

When Katherine heard that, she just gave me a cold look. "Did you think I'd let you off just because Mark is offering to take the blame for you? The client found your proposal completely unacceptable, so you can forget about your bonuses for the next three months!"

I had never seen this proposal before.

But now that something went wrong, she shifted all the blame to me.

My colleagues' stares seemed to bore into me.

Some were whispering among themselves while others seemed to be gloating.

I firmly met Katherine's gaze. "I did not write a single letter in that proposal."

Lowering her voice, Katherine said to me, "You're just an ordinary employee, so it's fine if you get punished a little. But Mark is different. I just recommended him for a promotion to supervisor, so if they find out he's lacking competence right now, the higher-ups will have him demoted. Please help Mark and me out just this once."

When I saw how anxious she was to defend Mark, I knew then that it was truly over.

Mark gave me an apologetic glance, but he didn't speak up for me.

I suddenly smiled. "Fine."

I decided I would do it to repay him for drinking in my stead that one time.

Because I had taken the blame, I was blacklisted by the higher-ups and terminated with immediate effect.

I was called into the boss's office at 3:00 pm. She told me, "To be honest, Beckett, you're far too good for this company anyway."

She rescinded my resignation and converted it into a paid termination.

After signing the new contract, I thanked her.

When the workday was over, I was the last to leave.

I dumped everything on my desk into the trash can.

I had just arrived at the hotel when I received messages from Katherine and Mark, sent almost at the same time.

They said they had planned to treat me to a grand meal as compensation, and the venue would be a date-night spot.

It was a viral restaurant where they shared countless dinners for two in the past.

Every time they came back, they would explain to me that it was because the date-night dinners there had the best value for money, and they didn't have any other intentions.

But Katherine never took me there, not even once.

I could only look at Mark's social media posts in envy and listen to his rants.

I didn't respond to their messages. Instead, I took a cab straight to the airport.

Before I boarded the plane, the two were still reminding me about the date. They said they had a surprise for me.

The messages were getting annoying, so I blocked them both.

Six years ago, with flight tickets in hand, I didn't even hesitate as I headed toward an unfamiliar city, determined to forge a path in life with Katherine. Six years later, Katherine found Mark, and she no longer had a place for me in her heart.

As for me, I decided that it was time to go home.

I received a summons from the Ardenbrook Court.Mark had sued Katherine and the company and demanded compensation for defamation. He claimed in court that he was forced to do it. He said that Katherine had arranged everything, and he was just following orders.Katherine sat at the defense table, not uttering a single word.I appeared in court as a witness. As soon as Mark saw me, his expression shifted. "Victor, I'm so glad you're here. Go on, tell the judge that Katherine told me to steal all those projects. I had no choice…"When I heard that, I had completely lost my faith in him.Everything should have been resolved with that release agreement. But Mark greedily tried to sue so that he could get some compensation out of it.This time, I had no intention of helping him keep his secret.I presented a document. It was the document Katherine had mailed to me. I had photocopied it.I explained, "Here are the original proposals I have ghostwritten in the past three years. The

Just when I thought my chapter in Ardenbrook had come to an end, Mark came knocking. He was waiting for me at the entrance of the library. He took off his sunglasses to reveal his swollen eyes. He had actually been crying."Victor, I'm at my wit's end." Gripping my sleeve, he pleaded in a hoarse voice, "The company fired me and listed all the extra salary and bonuses I've received in the past three years. They want me to return it all, but I don't even have that much money right now. My dad is still hospitalized, so I can't have my parents find out. Please just help me out one last time, okay?"I looked at him, but I remained silent. He pulled out a settlement agreement. "They'll stop coming after me once this agreement is signed, but you have to provide your signature to confirm that you willingly handed over those projects to me."I looked down at the agreement. The terms were crystal clear. "Victor Beckett voluntarily waives all credit and bonus distributions for the relevant

The other end of the line fell completely silent.A long while later, Mark's voice rang out again. This time, he had dropped the buddy act."And so what?" he said in a low voice, "She chose me herself."I didn't say anything in reply.I simply hung up and blocked his new number. The next day, Katherine came over again. This time, she brought a new watch with her."Here." She handed me the watch. "I'll buy you anything you want."I suddenly recalled what happened seven years ago.Back then, we had just gotten together, and she was broke. She couldn't afford expensive watches for my birthday. So, in the end, she picked a pretty flower she found by the road.Handing me the flower, she smiled as she said, "When I get rich in the future, I'll buy you tons of watches so you can wear a different one every day."Now, she had indeed earned a lot of money. But the watch she bought was no longer meant for me.I said, "Actually, I never cared about the gift."Katherine's hands tre

The whole world seemed to fall silent for a moment.I stared at the woman standing in front of me. All of a sudden, I found this a little absurd. "Propose?""Yes." Katherine took a deep breath. She looked like she was trying hard to calm herself. "I've planned this a long time ago. For the past few months, I've been asking Mark to cover for me while helping me plan the proposal…"I retorted, "So what? Is making me the scapegoat part of the surprise, too?"Katherine's face turned pale. "That was an accident. Anyway, he's your childhood friend, so it's not a big deal for you to take the blame in his stead."I let out a dry, cold laugh. "It's not a big deal? Then why wouldn't he accept the company's punishment himself? He just thinks I'm an idiot who would help him without a second thought!"Katherine parted her lips, but she couldn't utter a single word.I looked her in the eye and said firmly, "Katherine, all this while, your proposal has been nothing but an excuse for you to fli

It was already 5:00 am by the time the plane landed in Valis.Pulling up a ticketing app, I bought tickets for the earliest train back to my hometown. My hometown was a county three hours away from Valis. When I reached home, Mom was feeding the hens in the yard. She was stunned for a couple of seconds when she saw me standing at the door with my luggage behind me.Then, she set down the clothespins and came over to take my suitcase. "You're back."I responded, "Yes. I quit my job."Mom looked like she had a million questions for me, but in the end, she simply said, "Come in. I'll heat up some leftovers for you."After the meal, I slept for a whole day.By the time I woke up, the sun had already set.I checked my phone. There were several missed calls from an unknown number in Ardenbrook.I ignored them. The next day, after leaving a note for Mom, I went to apply for a job at the county library. After looking through my academic history and skills, the director immediately
