Chapter 6

The air grew quiet. Chris' dark eyes gleamed coldly as he stared down the extremely nervous Kathryn in complete silence. He attempted to discern how truthful she was being.

Kathryn looked at Chris anxiously, her palms drenched in sweat. She felt like she was going to go insane at any moment. She prayed that Tally wouldn't send her any more messages.

Just as she was about to break down, Chris finally asked in a cold tone, "What part-time job?"

"Relief sculpting," Kathryn replied.

"What's that?" Chris asked. The profession clearly puzzled him.

"It's basically a form of sculpting," she answered. It was something that wasn't related to her current job at Albert Group in any way.

Kathryn assessed his response cautiously and found that she couldn't read the man's expression at all. She had no idea if she had passed his test or not.

Chris cast a cold glance at her, then took a drag from his cigarette. "Don't we pay you enough?" he asked.

"No, it's not that. I just enjoy sculpting." She'd only taken up the part-time job because she liked it.

Upon feeling the cold air emanating from Chris, Kathryn lowered her head and sniffled, feeling cowed. Then she said meekly, "If you don't allow it, then I'll promise not to work part-time anymore."

During onboarding, the HR department had already made it clear that no employees were allowed to have a second job elsewhere. Perhaps it was because they were concerned about the employees working for the company's competitors.

Kathryn was almost certain that Chris would write her up for her admission, but he didn't. "You may leave," he simply uttered in a deep voice.

Kathryn looked up at the man in confusion. What did Chris mean by "leave"? She had no idea what he really meant.

Chris was typing away on his laptop with slender fingers. He completely ignored her.

Kathryn didn't dare stay any longer and fled from his office. She ran all the way to the elevator, then patted her chest to soothe her pounding heart. She'd almost died of fear moments ago.

If Chris had followed up on the questioning and asked about the events of that night, Kathryn just might have caved and spilled the beans.

When she met up with Tally, Kathryn's face was still pale. Tally grabbed her hand and raised a hand to hail a cab as she complained, "Didn't you say that you would only take half an hour? I sent you so many messages, but you didn't reply to any of them!"

It would've been bearable if Tally hadn't mentioned the messages, but upon hearing that, Kathryn felt smoke come out of her ears.

When Tally noticed that Kathryn was still quiet and looked pale, she pinched her arm and asked, "Why do you look so pale? Are you sick?"

"I'm fine!" Kathryn exclaimed.

"Why does everyone keep asking if I'm sick these days? Does everyone want me to keel over or something?" she thought.

Kathryn was perfectly healthy. She'd just had a huge fright.

"Then what's wrong? You look deathly pale," Tally asked.

"I was scared!"

"What were you scared of?" Tally looked at Kathryn in surprise.

Kathryn had only been called back to the company to make some changes to a contract. What on earth could've possibly scared her this much? Tally figured out what had probably happened in an instant. Her expression turned solemn. "Did Mr. Albert find out?"

Kathryn instantly teared up at that. Seeing that she was about to cry again, Tally's heart clenched. "He didn't find out, did he?"

Kathryn shook her head. "No, but he read all the messages you sent me!"

Tally fell silent. Flashes of the messages she sent to Kathryn appeared in her mind. Besides her constant urging for Kathryn to hurry, she'd included some inquiries as well.

Everything fell silent instantly. Only the sound of cars whizzing by on the road could be heard.

Tally paled as well. "Mr. Albert didn't find anything out, did he?"

Kathryn's face froze. More tears began to well up in her eyes. "He probably didn't, but he's still looking for the woman he slept with that night," she managed to choke out.

That made Tally feel completely on edge as well. Kathryn looked at her with teary eyes. "Can you just call me next time you need something if I'm at work?" Tally couldn't send her texts anymore. The content of her messages had revealed too much. If it happened a few more times, Kathryn might end up with her head on the chopping block.

Tally nodded. "Don't worry, I won't send you texts ever again."She didn't have the guts to do it again.

However, what remained unknown was whether or not Chris had pieced the truth together himself.
