Chapter 7

Kathryn and Tally had originally planned to go on a shopping spree. However, after they found out that Chris was still searching for the woman from that night, the two women no longer had the mood to shop. They returned to their apartment, feeling listless.

Tally slumped herself on the small couch in the bedroom and said, "Let's just quit our jobs."

Kathryn turned toward her and replied, "I can't. I have a monthly mortgage of two thousand dollars. I can't afford to just quit."

Tally's expression turned even more solemn. She hugged a pillow to her chest and squeezed it several times, but found that it didn't work to calm her down.

"Why don't you just sell the house?" Tally suggested.

If Kathryn didn't have to pay off her mortgage, she wouldn't be afraid to quit her job. As long as Kathryn quit, Tally wouldn't be implicated. Even though this thought was a bit selfish, at least one of them would be able to make it out of this alive.

"It hasn't even been a year since I bought it. I can't sell it," Kathryn said. In Harborlean, one needed to hold the rights to a property for two whole years before they could sell it. Tally was at the end of her rope.

Kathryn had a monthly mortgage of two thousand dollars to pay off, yet all her credit cards had been confiscated by her father. Her father had told her that she wasn't allowed to return home until she'd learned something from the Albert Group.

Even though Kathryn was from a rich family, she was forced to make a living by herself.

In any case, this meant that neither Tally nor Kathryn could afford to quit their jobs. They exchanged worried glances as their hearts pounded furiously in their chests.

After thinking it over, they decided that it was best to hide the truth from Chris. "In that case, be really careful of how you act around him from now on."

Kathryn suddenly lit up with excitement. "Oh, I've got an idea! I can just apply for a department transfer!"

Tally's face darkened. "Have you forgotten that Mr. Albert went out of his way to purposely transfer you out of your previous department to work by his side?"

Kathryn used to work as an assistant in the trade department at Albert Group. Chris had seen her one day and suddenly transferred her to work as his assistant.

At the time, all the female employees in the company thought that Chris fancied Kathryn. Later on, they realized that Kathryn was just really good at her job. She and Chris had nothing but a professional relationship with each other, so the gossip died down very quickly.

However, even if she and Chris only had a professional relationship, the man had personally asked for her to be transferred over to his side. If Kathryn applied for a department transfer all of a sudden, the HR department probably wouldn't approve of her request just like that.

Kathryn's face fell. "Then what should I do?" At the thought of Chris still searching high and low for the woman he had slept with that night, Kathryn couldn't imagine how she was going to face him in the future.

"There's only one thing you can do. Just pretend that nothing happened," Tally said.

"But I'm scared!" Kathryn burst into tears. She was the epitome of pathetic at this moment. Tally couldn't understand what had made Chris transfer Kathryn to his side in the first place.

She huffed in response. "I am too, but let me be frank with you. If he finds out that you're the woman from that night, I'll be dragged into trouble with you as well, so pull yourself together!"

After their discussion, they concluded that there was no other choice. They could only persevere and hope for the best.

Tears streamed down Kathryn's face as Tally comforted her, saying, "Come on, stop crying. You can do this!" Kathryn seemed to cry even harder at that. Her body trembled as she cried.

To cheer Kathryn up, Tally treated her to a delicious meal. Only then did Kathryn seem placated.

She managed to coax Kathryn to head to work the next day. The crowd at the company was crazy in the morning. Kathryn waited for several rounds, but there was still no space for her in any of the elevators. She checked the time on her phone. She was going to be late for work!

She was anxious. Chris always arrived half an hour early to work every day. She gritted her teeth and made her way toward the president's personal elevator.

The elevator started to ascend from the basement level. When the doors opened with a ding, Kathryn moved to step inside. However, when she looked up, she met someone's gaze in the elevator, which made her heart skip a beat.

"Mr. Albert!"

Oh, she was really going to be dead this time.

Chris merely glanced at her coldly but didn't say a word.

Kathryn went to turn around. Just as she was about to take a step back, she heard Markus call out, "Ms. Michaels, come on in!" He was standing behind Chris.

Markus knew that Kathryn was afraid of Chris. Chris and Kathryn had worked together for so long, yet not only had Kathryn failed to warm up to Chris with time, but she also seemed to become more and more afraid of him instead.
